Marlee Silva reveals how we can make our nation safer for women through Australia’s most loved sport, in Skin in the Game

Deeply personal high stakes reckoning about the future of NRL and who we are as a nation premieres Sunday 23 March at 8.30pm on NITV, SBS and SBS on Demand

Marlee Silva, proud Gamilaroi and Dunghutti woman, rising sports commentator and rugby league royalty reveals the real story behind Australia’s most loved sport in Skin in the Game, a deeply personal, high stakes reckoning about the future of NRL and who we are as a nation.

In this intimate documentary, premiering on Sunday 23 March on NITV, SBS and SBS on Demand, Marlee, a self-proclaimed rugby league ‘tragic’, daughter of all-time great of the sport, Rod “Rocket” Silva, investigates the positive power of rugby to shape us as a nation: where we’ve been, how far we’ve come and where we need to go.

Growing up living and breathing the sport, Marlee knows the power of rugby league to transform lives – but she also knows that it can hold a mirror to some ugly truths, especially when it comes to women and violence. Against a rising tide of domestic and family violence in Australia, where one woman a week is killed by a current or former partner; and one in four experiences violence at the hands of someone they know1, Marlee examines what the sport she loves can do to be part of the solution.

Skin in the Game provides unparalleled access to the players, their fans and families, as well as the sport’s leading influencers including rugby league broadcaster and former player and coach Phil Gould, NRL superstar Nicho Hynes, NRL Chairman Peter V’landys AM, NRLW player Lavinia Gould, former Chair of the West Tigers Rugby League Club Marina Go AM and Marlee’s father, rugby league legend, ‘Rocket’ Rod Silva.

Revealing the hidden history of women in the game, and pursuing her mission across the sports field, the corridors of power and her own backyard, Marlee embarks on a powerful, deeply personal interrogation that reveals what needs to be done – and why we all have “skin in this game”.

Host, writer and executive producer, Marlee Silva, said, “Rugby league is a sport of opportunity – not just for the players – but as a platform where we can have tough conversations and show how much better we can be as a society. Skin in the Game began as a daunting journey, but even more daunting is the future of our society if we ignore the current culture of violence against women in Australia.

“When I think about having “skin in the game”, it’s not just my skin as an individual or my family, but who we are as a community. This one-hour documentary is a passionate quest to break down stereotypes and turn the dial.”

Jason Oakley, NITV General Manager, said: “Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander peoples’ love of sport is well-documented and it’s a key part of life for many. We know that sport can positively impact Indigenous peoples and it can also contribute to change in Australian culture. Skin in the Game emphasises this.

“The documentary is an important, agenda-setting program for all Australians, and we hope it starts a multitude of conversations that make a difference.”

Screen Australia Head of Documentary Richard Huddleston said: “Skin in the Game not only examines rugby league’s past, it also explores how its community can help build a more tolerant and inclusive society. Bold and unflinching, with candid family moments, Marlee’s love of the sport shines through and is matched by her desire for Australian women to have a safer future.”

Kyas Hepworth, Head of Screen NSW said: “Sport in Australia, particularly rugby league, has the power to bring about significant change, particularly in our First Nations communities. Screen NSW are thrilled to support Southern Pictures and Marlee to bring this powerful documentary to audiences on NITV and SBS, and we hope it will spark a national conversation and be a catalyst for change both on and off the field when it releases.”

Southern Pictures CEO, Laurie Critchley, said:“We’re proud to support Marlee Silva in producing her first documentary. Hers is an exciting and welcome voice. Skin in the Game is Marlee’s love-letter to Rugby League — and a persuasive and passionate exploration of how sport can drive much-needed change for women and men.”

Skin in the Game is a Southern Pictures production for NITV. Principal production funding from Screen Australia in association with NITV. Financed with support from Screen NSW and the Shark Island Institute.

Watch Skin in the Game on NITV, SBS and SBS On Demand on Sunday 23 March at 8.30pm with subtitles in Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese.

Six Australians are currently playing in the MLS, including Socceroos Kye Rowles (DC United) and Patrick Yazbek (Nashville SC).

The next match to be broadcast, at 10am AEDT on 10 March, features LA Galaxy versus St Louis City. Next week’s match (10am AEDT on 17 March) features Messi’s Inter Miami against Atlanta United. The full schedule is here: How to watch 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season LIVE on SBS | SBS Sport

Kooyong Classic set for return to SBS screens in 2026

Some of the biggest names in the ATP world rankings will once again descend on the spiritual home of Australian tennis at Kooyong, Victoria as part of their preparations for the 2026 Australian Open.

The Kooyong Classic will return to the screens of SBS from January 13-15 next year, following the cancellation of the 2025 tournament due to operational issues.

The participants are yet to be revealed, but the 2026 tournament will almost certainly boast a stellar field of men’s and women’s singles players.

The 2024 edition featured a star-studded line-up including world number one and two-time Australian Open men’s singles champion Jannik Sinner, world number 12 Holger Rune, world number five Casper Ruud, and Australian Marc Polmans.

Additionally, former US Open champions Marin Cilic and Dominic Thiem, 2023 Australian Open semi-finalist Karen Khachanov, three-time grand slam champions Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka, world number 14 Danielle Collins and world number 11 Mirra Andreeva.

Past participants in the tournament also include Australian world number 10 Alex de Minaur and world number four Taylor Fritz.

All three days of the Australian Open warm-up tournament will be brought to you live and free via SBS and SBS On Demand, wrapping up on Thursday, January 15 - just three days before the main event gets underway at Melbourne Park.

Kooyong Classic tournament director Peter Johnston was thrilled that the event would be returning in 2026.

“The Kooyong Classic is a beloved event with a storied history," Johnston said.

“We look forward to delivering an unforgettable experience for both players and fans.”

NITV and Cricket Australia elevate First Nations sport with National Indigenous Cricket Championships Finals live broadcast on 7 April

National Indigenous Television (NITV) and Cricket Australia are proud to announce the live broadcast of the National Indigenous Cricket Championships (NICC) finals on NITV and SBS On Demand on Monday 7 April from 9.15am (AEST), bringing this important event to national audiences in a free-to-air exclusive.

The week-long T20 tournament culminates in the Women’s and Men’s finals, with teams competing for victory. The Women’s final airs live at 9.15am, and the Men’s final at 1.45pm, with this being the first time NITV has broadcast the NICC.

The two finals will be separated by the fascinating documentary, Walkabout Wickets, at 12.30pm on NITV, which follows the 2018 National Indigenous Cricket team as they retrace the steps of an 1868 Aboriginal cricket team, who were the first Australian sports team to tour overseas.

The National Indigenous Cricket Championships (NICC) will this year be held on Yuwibara Country in Mackay, Queensland, a historic first for the event. NICC showcases some of the best Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cricketers from across the country, with many playing in the Big Bash Leagues, First-Class and Premier Cricket, providing the opportunity to celebrate cricket’s connection with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NICC offers a pathway for talented and aspiring Indigenous cricketers to display their skill on the national stage, following in the footsteps of Scott Boland, Ashleigh Gardner, D’Arcy Short and Dan Christian, who have all competed in the national championships before going on to represent Australia at the highest level.

Hannah Darlington, Kamilaroi woman, NSW cricket player and Cricket Australia RAP Ambassador, said: “It’s fantastic the NICC finals will be broadcast on NITV this year. It’s a great way to celebrate the incredible talent within our Indigenous cricket communities while highlighting the importance of culture and connection through sport.”

Jason Oakley, Acting General Manager at NITV, said: “NITV has a proud history in supporting Indigenous sport. From live broadcasts to panel shows, we are invested in showcasing Black excellence to all Australians, with one of these avenues being sport. Cricket is a much-loved, national pastime, so it’s with joy that we’re working with Cricket Australia on the NICC. We hope that by elevating sport on NITV, we help inspire the next generation of children to get involved.”

Megan Barnett-Smith, Cricket Australia’s Head of Social Impact and Sustainability, said: “The NICC is such an important event for Indigenous cricket. It brings together incredible talent from across the country and highlights the strength of communities through sport.

“Having the finals broadcast nationally on NITV is a wonderful platform to share these stories and achievements with a wider audience, inspiring pride and connection.”

Since 2016, the NICC has brought together hundreds of talented Indigenous cricketers, coaches and match officials from different mobs to celebrate cricket, culture and Country.

Watch the National Indigenous Cricket Championships (NICC) Finals on NITV and SBS On Demand on Monday 7 April from 9.15am (AEST).
