Pretty sure Optus Sport had the rights in 2017 - don’t know who (if anyone) had them last year

No one (FTA nor Foxtel nor Optus) showed the tournament last year.

I thought that Nine had the NBL rights until 2020/21?

The Nine deal feel apart after Fox Sport made the decision not to continue with the competition

Thats a shame… you would get more viewers on Nine then you get on SBS

It’s the second time SBS has the rights to the NBL. The upcoming exhibition series between Australia and USA should bring good ratings for SBS Viceland despite the withdrawals of several stars.

What does it mean for the W-League coverage on SBS though? Can it still be shown on main channel or will it move to 10?
There is no mention of WNBL either. Will it lose any TV coverage (last season it was on Fox Sports)?

SBS the exclusive free-to-air home of Australian Basketball through new broadcast deal with NBL

Australian basketball fans will be the big winners in the NBL’s new broadcast agreement with SBS, which will nearly double the number of games available live, free and in HD and at better timeslots.

Under the two-year deal, fans will have access to the entire 2019-20 Hungry Jack’s NBL season for free, with 67 games broadcast on SBS VICELAND – an 86 per cent increase in free-to-air coverage compared to the 2018-19 season – and all 126 games available live and free on streaming platform SBS OnDemand. Melbourne United and South East Melbourne Phoenix will tip-off the 2019-20 NBL season on October 3 2019.

Additionally, from 16 August, the highly anticipated International Basketball Series will also be exclusively available to watch within Australia on SBS VICELAND and can be streamed live and free via SBS OnDemand.

These seven pre-FIBA World Cup internationals, as delivered by TEG Live in partnership with Basketball Australia, feature games involving the Australian Boomers, Canada, New Zealand and USA Basketball, including two games between the Australian Boomers and the USA at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne in front of 100,000 fans.

“SBS has a strong heritage of championing sports Australia’s diverse communities are passionate about, and we are thrilled to be partnering with the NBL to become the exclusive free-to-air home of Australian basketball, offering more free coverage than ever before, and in HD," said SBS Managing Director, James Taylor.

“With around one million Australians playing basketball, it’s one of the nation’s leading team sports for participation* and we look forward to bringing fans every memorable minute of one of the country’s fastest-growing leagues.”

NBL Owner and Executive Chairman, Larry Kestelman said “This broadcast agreement is a huge leap forward in the coverage of the NBL and basketball across Australia.

“It maintains our commitment to make the game available to more people to watch when and how they choose across different platforms and will continue to grow our audience across Australia.

“The agreement sees the number of games broadcast on free-to-air television almost double, making our national league accessible to more Australians, with SBS VICELAND becoming the new free-to-air home of the NBL along with more coverage available on SBS OnDemand.”

The SBS 2019-2020 NBL broadcast schedule runs from October 3 2019 - March 2020 with specific broadcast details to be announced within the next two months.

Don’t think Nine would be that happy with this, after investing a bit of cash in the sport.

Don’t think they ever investing any real level of cash. They just gave air time on their secondary channel and shared the ad revenue with NBL.
NBL has been fronting up all production costs as well.

Back in May Basketball Australia gave the NBL the job of finding a television partner for the Boomers, Opals and WNBL. So I wonder what is happening with the WNBL as they have not been included in the deal that has been announced. Or could the WNBL be on Fox Sports using the federal government’s sports broadcasting cash?

Quite a big deal for SBS actually.

Yeah, this is a ‘slam dunk’ for them in every aspect. The big thing is unlike past NBL FTA deals, SBS will have exclusivity over all the regular games they show (simulcasting the finals with ESPN is fair enough IMO). SBS On Demand being able to not just stream their games but ESPN’s as well is the cherry on top of the cake.

Additionally, SBS getting exclusive rights to the Boomers matches against the USA is a big coup for them.
