Secret Letters of Mary Queen of Scots

Sunday 16 November 08:25 PM

One of Britain’s most famous and controversial monarchs, Mary Queen of Scots spent much of her life in captivity. To maintain her power, build alliances and outwit her enemies, she wrote and smuggled out hundreds of coded letters. For centuries, historians believed many of these letters had been lost or destroyed. That changed when three amateur codebreakers – Satoshi Tomokiyo, George Lasry and Norbert Biermann – deciphered a collection of mysterious coded documents and discovered they were authored by Mary.

The decoded letters shed new light on Mary’s imprisonment in England: her complaints of ill health and financial strain, her fear of betrayal, her persistent plotting to regain the throne, and her fraught relationship with her son, James VI. They reveal her resilience under relentless surveillance by Elizabeth I’s spymaster, Sir Francis Walsingham, and the extraordinary lengths she went to in order to secretly correspond with her allies and supporters.

Set against the dramatic backdrop of Mary’s rise and fall – from infant queen to prisoner, from abusive marriages to violent scandals – this documentary brings together historians and the modern codebreakers who unlocked her words.

Born into an intriguing dynasty, that of the Ptolemies, she will be the heir to three centuries of shenanigans, plots and murders. Experts reveal the origin of Cleopatra and her family secrets.

Ken Burn’s The American Revolution

Sunday 7 December 08:30 PM

Directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt, this landmark series examines how America’s founding turned the world upside-down. The American Revolution was at once a war for independence, a war of conquest, a civil war, and a world war, fought by neighbours on American farms and between global powers an ocean or more away. It impacted millions from Vermont’s Green Mountains to the swamps of South Carolina, from Indian Country to the Iberian Peninsula. In defeating the British Empire and giving birth to a new nation, the American Revolution turned the world upside-down. Thirteen colonies on the Atlantic Coast united in rebellion, won their independence, and established a republic.

Voiced by an all-star cast including Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Damian Lewis, Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Hutcherson and Morgan Freeman – The American Revolution brings to life the definitive story of how a fight for representation became the revolution that changed the world.

Episode One: In Order to Be Free (May 1754 – May 1775):

American colonists oppose efforts by the British Crown and Parliament to seize greater control in North America, escalating simmering tensions over land, taxes, and sovereignty into violent confrontation. After protestors dump tea in Boston Harbor, the British government enacts martial law in Massachusetts. Fighting at Lexington and Concord ignites a war that will last eight years.

Space Station Odyssey

Wednesday 10 December 08:25 PM

The ISS hurtles around Earth at 17,000mph, its thin metal walls shielding astronauts from the most hostile environment humans have ever endured. Its construction, in space, was as dangerous as it was ambitious, providing a perilous place to try to survive. Astronauts here have had to contend with faulty spacesuits, docking disasters, and even the entire ISS backflipping out of control.

Discover the perils of building and living on the ISS in Terror on the Space Station.

Episode One:

One of humanity’s greatest achievements, the ISS is the size of a football field. Built in countries across the world, then assembled in space over 40 missions and multiple spacewalks, the project is as dangerous as it is ambitious. A single mistake could prove fatal.

Crime - Season 2

Wednesday 10 December 09:25 PM

The great Irvine Welsh—the colossus of Scottish fiction—turns his attention to a television drama series with a story adapted from his best-selling novel. As with his masterpiece Trainspotting, the streets of Edinburgh are the setting for Irvine Welsh’s Crime—the story of a tormented detective in a city on the edge of the abyss. International star Dougray Scott leads a stellar cast as Detective Inspector Ray Lennox, a man whose clear sight is as much a blessing as it is a curse. Prepare to enter this dangerous world and the troubled mind of Ray Lennox—a man engaged in his own disturbing battle, all while undertaking serious crime investigations in the glaring light of the public arena.

Joining Dougray Scott (Mission: Impossible 2, My Week with Marilyn, Batwoman) in his International Emmy and BAFTA Scotland award-winning role in Season 1 is Joanna Vanderham (Warrior, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) as DS Amanda Drummond, Angela Griffin (Harlots, White Lines) as Trudi Lowe, Ken Stott (The Dig, Fortitude) as Chief Superintendent Bob Toal, Jamie Sives (Guilt, Too Close) as DI Dougie Gillman, David Elliot (Kajaki) as DI Tommy Stark, Brian McCardie (Murphy’s Law) as DS Norrie Erskine, and Rebecca Root (The Queen’s Gambit) as Lauren Fairchild.

Season Two, Episode One:

DI Ray Lennox is back at work and determined to put the Confectioner case behind him. When a beloved former colleague is assaulted by a mystery assailant and comes to him for help, Lennox quickly becomes embroiled in a new case as he starts to suspect this is linked to a recent gruesome hotel attack on a high-ranking establishment figure.

Jaws: Making A Splash In Hollywood

Friday 12 December 07:30 PM

The arrival of Jaws in 1975 marks a key before and after moment in American cinema history. Leaving protest and anti-establishment films behind, it heralded the era of the blockbuster, big movies full of suspense and special effects – and launched the career of a young Steven Spielberg.

This film investigates the making of this pillar of pop culture, a production that was its very own thriller behind the scenes, full of twists and turns. It explores the different outcomes for cinema history if the mechanical shark had worked properly, if Spielberg had exited the project, and if it had been released during the winter as planned. Based on film’s footage, featuring archives with Spielberg and Richard Dreyfuss – as well as exclusive interviews with the heirs of Jaws such as Lorraine Gary, Alexandra Aja or Ian Shaw - we examine the film’s significance and its enduring legacy as a launchpad for both modern cinema and one of the greatest film makers of all time
