Cold War Spies

Sunday 26 April 5.35pm (6 parts)

Cold War Spies pulls the iron curtain back on the Cold War, a conflict fought by spies, not soldiers, where the weapons were secret cameras, miniature recording devices, codes, stealth and poisoned umbrellas. With contributions by former agents of the CIA, M15 and the KGB, the series includes archive film from the time, supplemented by evocations of key moments and first-hand accounts from those who lived to tell the tale.

Episode One: Licence To Kill This series premiere looks at the Poisoned Umbrella case, the assassination of President John F Kennedy, and the Salisbury Poisonings as well as the bizarre, but documented, story of USSR President Joseph Stalin ordering a hit on Hollywood Legend John Wayne.

Pompeii: The New Dig – The Woman With The Pearl Earring

Sunday 26 April 7.30pm

A new one-hour episode of Pompeii: The New Dig reveals the latest findings as the biggest archaeological dig in Pompeii for a generation reaches its climax. Told through the drama of the dig and stylised fresco-inspired animations, The Woman with the Pearl Earring continues to paint a vivid picture of what life was like in Pompeii, as well as the horror faced by the residents as the volcano erupted in AD 79.

In this new episode, the focus of the excavation moves to a luxurious residence, possibly owned by local politician Aulus Rustius Verus. Here the team make a discovery: the body of a woman, crouched on the floor, clutching a pouch containing pearl earrings and gold coins, possessions worth thousands of pounds in today’s money. As the archaeologists continue to expose the extent of Aulus’ affluent residence, another discovery is made: a second victim, this time a man, who died under a collapsing wall.

Who were these people and why did they stay behind when so many fled? The team in Pompeii hope to piece together their identities as they continue to build a picture of one of the wealthiest houses in town and those living there.

New evidence suggests Göbekli Tepe may have been more than a ceremonial centre. Surrounded by abundant wildlife and near the headwaters of the Tigris and Euphrates, it may have been a rare paradise where hunter-gatherers could gather, settle, and thrive.

Yet, at the height of its significance, Göbekli Tepe was deliberately buried and abandoned. Why was this extraordinary site erased from the landscape? This documentary series investigates the secrets of Göbekli Tepe, exploring its revolutionary role in human history and the enduring mystery behind its disappearance.

SBS & NITV LEAD NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK 2026 WITH LANDMARK GULPILIL DOCUMENTARY

A powerful national slate invites all Australians to be All In — engaging with shared histories, cultures and stories that shape the nation

A NATIONAL MOMENT FOR REFLECTION AND ACTION

National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) marks two pivotal milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey — the 1967 Australian referendum and the Mabo decision. It is a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and consider the role each of us plays in reconciliation.

In 2026, SBS will deliver a network-wide offering with National Indigenous Television (NITV) at its heart, presenting a curated slate of powerful First Nations storytelling. From Sunday 25 May, audiences can access extensive multiplatform and multilingual coverage across SBS, NITV and SBS On Demand.

Aligned with this year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, All In, the programming calls on all Australians to engage, reflect and take meaningful action through shared responsibility and collective effort.

STORIES THAT SHAPE THE NATION

SBS and NITV’s National Reconciliation Week line-up highlights the vital role of First Nations storytelling in fostering understanding, respect and connection**.**

Tanya Denning-Orman, a proud Birri and Guugu Yimidhirr woman and Director, First Nations, for SBS, said:“National Reconciliation Week is a powerful moment to bring all Australians into the conversation, and this year’s theme, All In, reflects the role we can all play in shaping a more unified future. Across SBS, we are taking a whole-of-network approach to ensure First Nations voices, perspectives and stories are seen and heard — connecting audiences through programming that informs, challenges and inspires.

“From historic moments like Corroboree 2000 and the Sydney Harbour Bridge Walk, to our continued coverage of the issues shaping the national conversation today, SBS has long stood alongside First Nations communities in telling these stories. That commitment remains central to who we are.

“Join us this National Reconciliation Week for a network-wide line-up of programming and coverage, offering all Australians the opportunity to reflect, connect and celebrate the 65,000 years of history and culture we share in this country.”

Marilyn Monroe: The Rise Of An Icon

Sunday 31 May 5:30 PM
Celebrating Marilyn Monroe’s 100th birthday

In February 1954, Marilyn Monroe interrupted her honeymoon in Japan with Joe DiMaggio and flew to a warn-torn Korea, invited by the American army to do a tour intended to cheer up the GIs.

During those four days, she sang in front of more than 100,000 soldiers. Overcoming the freezing cold and her stage fright, she performed her signature songs, such as “Diamonds are A Girl’s Best Friend”, over the course of 10 shows. For Marilyn Monroe, it was a defining moment. By performing on stage for the very first time, she would meet her American audience, but also reveal herself. Later, she would say it was the first time she ever “felt like a star”.

Thanks to fully restored archive footage, this film dives into a little-known yet pivotal episode in the life and career of Marilyn Monroe. Through this journey, we also witness the story of the Korean War and the portrait of a profoundly anti-communist America.

Reintroduced in 1997 to restore ecological balance, these keystone predators continue to shape the 3,472-square-mile region in profound ways.
