I see 0/28 used a different station ID leading into the news.

A rare piece of TV history i’ve just come across… the first two hours of SBS Channel 0/28 in Sydney and Melbourne, Friday 24 October 1980, including Bruce Gyngell’s half-hour introduction to the new channel, Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser declaring the service open, Peter Luck’s documentary Who Are We?, the channel’s first foreign program, Chromakey Follies, and the first continuity presenter, Michela Rupena.

At around the 2:00 mark the tape skips to the following night and the comedy special Montreaux Comedy Festival including the John Cleese special To Norway, Home Of The Giants.

And there is a different take on the “Whole World Of People” station idents https://youtu.be/KvWEaWf4tSs?si=03ZLnrBIewU_QFoA&t=6209

I remember watching that opening night and the countdown clock as the last seconds ticked away, and Slim Sala Bim the next night, but I’d not seen them again in almost 45 years.

(I think we can possibly ignore the pop tune that can be heard underneath the opening seconds of this clip, too. I am pretty sure Channel 0 didn’t launch to the dulcet tones of “boys will be boys”!)

How to tune into the new UHF signal

Adapted from a 15-minute “UHF Documentary” that SBS ran multiple times a day over the summer of 1983-84 to promote UHF conversion where access to SBS via Channel 0 was ultimately going to be cut off. I had an audio recording of the program as i didn’t have a vcr back then. I should try to find that tape and something to play it on!
