SBS (main channel) - Programs and Schedules

There’s an acclaimed Icelandic drama series “Trapped” that is on SBS On Demand. It’s had rave reviews around the world and is the sort of show you’d expect SBS to broadcast, so if it’s so good, why don’t they put it on TV? So annoying.

##sbs Small Business Secrets

From Sunday 31 July at 5.00pm

New SBS program Small Business Secrets- Australian businesses overcoming the odds and finding success
Hosted by Ricardo Goncalves each week from Sunday 31 July on SBS

Small Business Secrets is a new weekly SBS program shining a light on the small business owners and innovators playing a vital role in Australia’s economic growth.

Hosted by SBS Finance Editor and World News presenter Ricardo Goncalves and produced by former ABC News and Business Today presenter Whitney Fitzsimmons, the program uses case studies to offer tips and insights into the roller-coaster of conceiving and running a small business in Australia.

Small to medium enterprises make up 97% of Australian businesses, and small business owners – many who come from diverse multicultural backgrounds – were a major target of the recent election campaigns. Small Business Secrets speaks directly to the real people and businesses the politicians have tried to reach.

Each week, it will feature a mix of established businesses offering the secrets to their success, those who have weathered financial storms, and those just starting out. In the process it will reveal how small businesses are fuelling Australia’s economy and show how you can turn your business idea into reality.

Small Business Secrets will also be complemented by a new website with tips, clips and articles on developments in the small business world, as well as an interactive ‘Small Business Toolbox’ to help you make the most of your developing business. The program will also use social media to distribute business news and tips in innovative ways.

The lady in the photo is producer Whitney Fitzsimmons who previously worked for the ABC.
IIRC Nine used to have a small business program a few years ago, while Seven shows Kochie’s Business Builders in October and November each year after the AFL finishes.

Peter Kuruvita returns to SBS with Coastal Kitchen

Following on from successful series’ My Sri Lanka, Island Feast and Mexican Fiesta, Peter Kuruvita makes a return to SBS screens

“I am so excited to be able to share the fresh flavours of local produce from my new home on the Sunshine Coast with SBS audiences. Tropical and coastal like my usual playground of Sri Lanka and the Pacific, the range of produce is diverse and the producers are passionate about the environment and sustainability. From the pristine coast line to the fertile hinterland, come with me on a journey of discovery through some of Queensland’s most picturesque locations and diverse food regions.” – Peter Kuruvita

Peter Kuruvita’s Coastal Kitchen is a celebration of Peter’s new sea change lifestyle and local produce in the Sunshine Coast and hinterlands.

Having bid farewell to city life and moved to the tropical seaside town of Noosa, chef and restaurateur, Peter Kuruvita heads out to meet the community of passionate producers to discover more about the fresh local produce that has made this region one of the most exciting new foodie destinations in Australia.

Heading back to his kitchen, Peter transforms rich, local ingredients like spanner crabs, Mooloolaba prawns, macadamia nuts, tropical fruits, heirloom vegetables, native herbs and spices and more into a delightful array of dishes for any occasion.

Discover Noosa, Gympie, Hinterlands of Maleny and Kenilworth, Mooloolaba, the Glasshouse Mountains and Kin Kin like never before with the warm and energetic Peter Kuruvita.

SBS are having to edit out the Olympic news parts of their world news programs, and it’s leaving large gaps between the programs that are being filled with classical music clips like one of a very tedious André Rieu.

Am I looking at the right schedule, or are SBS actually still repeating Letters and Numbers almost four and a half years after it was cancelled?

I remember it was replaced by the (much better IMO) UK equivalent - Countdown. When did that stop?

Christmas-themed Breakbumper:

I think I preferred last year’s SBS Christmas Breakbumper, but still a decent effort and it’s nice to see SBS do something festive with their On-Air Presentation unlike some other networks…

Hosting SBS’s special event broadcast will be returning hosts The Feed’s Patrick Abboud and TV personality, Faustina Agolley, with comedian Joel Creasey and breakfast radio host Em Rusciano also joining this year’s panel.

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is one of the world’s largest, most high profile and much loved LGBTQI celebrations, providing an opportunity to commemorate a universal message of diversity, equal rights, pride and inclusion. Born from a single night of political protest in 1978, the street parade is the spectacular sequinned centrepiece that brings a three-week long calendar of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festivities and events to a close.

SBS Director of Television and Online Content, Marshall Heald said: “The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is a very important celebration and social event on the LGBTQI calendar. It is also a significant event for Australia – as the parade celebrates and promotes social cohesion within Australia – and hundreds and thousands of spectators line the streets of Sydney in support of equality, pride and self-expression.
“SBS is incredibly proud to be broadcasting the parade yet again - as it provides a front row seat to the whole of Australia, offering them the opportunity to join into and be a part of this inclusive and spectacular celebration.”

The TV broadcast will include the best of the 2017 floats and costumes in the parade with commentary from Joel Creasey, Em Rusciano, Patrick Abboud and Faustina Agolley. The 90 minute broadcast will feature interviews with celebrity guests plus stories from some of the parade participants - exploring the messages behind the floats, covering issues of sexuality, equality and discrimination that affect the LGBTQI community.
SBS will also get in on the festivities with its very own float and SBS Radio 3 will join forces with Australia’s only gay & lesbian radio station, JOY 94.9 for a Mardi Gras weekend simulcast on digital radio and digital television around Australia - including a live broadcast of the parade, which is also available worldwide at sbs.com.au/mardigras.

Viewer tweets will be displayed on screen throughout the television broadcasts, using the official event hashtag #sydneymardigras.

##The Chefs’ Line

From Monday 3 April weeknights at 6pm

SBS dish up a delicious new food series for 6pm weeknights

Cultural exploration and discovery through food reaches new heights on SBS with the launch of The Chefs’ Line on Monday 3 April. A new format for weeknights at 6pm, over 13 weeks the series will explore the heritage, history and diversity that drives Australia’s restaurant culture, with home cooks challenging the very best chefs in cuisines across the country.

The series will be presented by SBS’s resident food expert Maeve O’Meara. The dishes will be judged by three of Australia’s hottest culinary stars; Executive Chef Dan Hong, renowned Indigenous chef Mark Olive and leading food writer Melissa Leong.

Each week, The Chefs’ Line will celebrate a different cuisine and a new chefs’ line will represent their restaurant. The home cooks must earn their stripes and cook their way up the ranks of the chefs’ line. We’ll see passion and personality go into every plate they produce and witness not just competition, but camaraderie as the home cooks learn and laugh with the professional chefs.

Marshall Heald, SBS Director of Television and Online Content, said: “We’re taking the popular competition cooking format and breathing new life into it with a classic SBS multicultural spin - going beyond the professional vs home cook dynamic and focusing on unique cuisines, their history, specialties and the people behind them.
“By focusing on a different cuisine each week, The Chefs’ Line will shine a light on the multicultural appeal of Australia’s diverse food culture.”

In the ultimate food fight, four home cooks go up against the apprentice chef every Monday night. The home cooks with the best three plates on the pass progress through to the next night. On Tuesday nights, home cooks have moved a step up the chefs’ line and cook against the station chef. Wednesdays is always the penultimate battle; home cooks take on the sous chef. Thursday night is the final night of the competition; the best home cook faces-off against the restaurant’s head chef in the ultimate David vs Goliath battle.

Can the passion of a home cook beat the skills of a professional? Who has what it takes to beat The Chefs’ Line?

In a special episode each Friday, Maeve O’Meara gives a guided tour of the featured restaurant, the chefs share stories from the week and tantalise with delicious recipes.

The Chefs’ Line premieres Monday 3 April, 6pm weeknights on SBS. Episodes will be available after broadcast via SBS On Demand.

###Testing Teachers

Six teachers, three public schools, one aim: to make a difference in young lives.

From Wednesday 19 April at 8.30pm

Premiering on Wednesday, 19 April at 8.30pm is SBS’s three-part observational documentary, Testing Teachers. With unprecedented access to three public high schools across Victoria, Western Australia and Northern Territory, Testing Teachers follows six first-time teachers over the course of 12 months as they start their new career as teachers.
Recent studies have shown that the postcode some children are born in can determine the level of education they’ll achieve. On average, a child growing up in a disadvantaged area is almost three years behind their peers from wealthier suburbs*.

Teach For Australia is an ambitious program that places some of Australia’s brightest minds in schools serving low socioeconomic communities, where many students, according to Australian school standard averages, are falling behind. After a block of intensive training, these high-achievers, who have had successful careers in other industries, are placed into classrooms where they are needed most, while they continue to study for their Masters of Teaching on the job.

With extraordinary access to this unique program and classrooms across metropolitan and remote Australia, Testing Teachers charts the highs and lows of these new teachers over 12 months. It also tackles some of the current issues new and ongoing teachers face, with stats claiming one in four new teachers suffer emotional exhaustion**.
Testing Teachers is a very real and personal journey of a group of passionate individuals as they confront Australia’s education gap head on, in what could be the most challenging year of their lives.

Did anyone watch The Chef’s Line?
I did and thought it was a good little alternative to the news, 30 minute cooking show. Not too bad!

Now I’m pretty skeptical when it comes to SBS, but saw this today and had a good chuckle: https://youtu.be/iNgZaFvTJ_Q
