Why Sharks Attack

image

From Friday 13 October 7:30 PM

June 8th 2023. A shark attacks a 23 year-old Russian man swimming just metres from the beach in the Red Sea vacation resort of Hurghada, Egypt. Horrified tourists watch from the shore. His injuries are so severe that he dies before help can arrive.

What brought these sharks into the shallow waters of luxury holiday resorts, away from their natural hunting grounds in the open ocean? Could mounting pressure from humans - from fishing, tourism and manmade climate change - be altering how these apex predators live and hunt?

An innovative mix of current-affairs investigation and scientific analysis, this documentary explores what could have caused not just the attacks in the Red Sea, but also other recent and unusual shark encounters around the world, including in the waters off Sydney and Florida.

Emmy® Award-winning series Fargo is back starring Juno Temple, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Joe Keery, and more

Don’t miss the fifth installment from Acclaimed Series Creator and Executive Producer Noah Hawley

Stream free exclusively from Wednesday 22 November on SBS On Demand and at 9:20pm on SBS

Fast-tracked from the US

The fifth instalment of Fargo, the Emmy®, AFI, Peabody and TCA Award-winning limited series created by Noah Hawley and produced by MGM Television and FX Productions, premieres on Wednesday 22 November exclusively on SBS On Demand and at 9:20pm on SBS.

The new season features an all-star ensemble cast including Juno Temple, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Jason Leigh, David Rysdahl, Joe Keery, Lamorne Morris, Richa Moorjani, Sam Spruell, and Dave Foley.

The latest installment of Fargo is set in Minnesota and North Dakota, 2019. After an unexpected series of events lands “Dorothy ‘Dot’ Lyon” (Temple) in hot water with the authorities, this seemingly typical Midwestern housewife is suddenly plunged back into a life she thought she had left behind.

North Dakota Sheriff “Roy Tillman” (Hamm) has been searching for Dot for a long time. A rancher, preacher and a constitutional lawman, Roy believes that he is the law and therefore is above the law. At his side is his loyal but feckless son, “Gator” (Keery), who is desperate to prove himself to his larger-than-life father. Too bad he’s hopeless. So, when it comes to hunting Dot, Roy enlists “Ole Munch” (Spruell), a shadowy drifter of mysterious origin.

With her deepest secrets beginning to unravel, Dot attempts to shield her family from her past, but her doting, well-meaning husband “Wayne” (Rysdahl) keeps running to his mother, “Lorraine Lyon” (Leigh), for help. CEO of the largest Debt Collection Agency in the country, the “Queen of Debt” is unimpressed with her son’s choice in a wife and spares no opportunity to voice her disapproval. However, when Dot’s unusual behaviour catches the attention of Minnesota Police Deputy “Indira Olmstead” (Moorjani) and North Dakota Deputy “Witt Farr” (Morris), Lorraine appoints her in-house counsel and primary advisor, “Danish Graves” (Foley) to aid her daughter-in-law. Afterall, family is family. But Dot has an uncanny knack for survival. And with her back to the wall, she’s about to show why one should never provoke a mother Lyon.

Hawley serves as showrunner/writer/director and his production company 26 Keys leads the creative team of the latest all-new installment. The first two episodes are written and directed by Hawley. Warren Littlefield (The Handmaid’s Tale, The Old Man, Dopesick), and his production company The Littlefield Company, also serves as executive producer along with Steve Stark (Vikings: Valhalla, Wednesday, The Consultant) of Toluca Pictures, Kim Todd (The Handmaid’s Tale, Brave New World), and Joel & Ethan Coen. Fargo is produced by MGM Television and FX Productions, with MGM Television serving as the lead studio. The series is internationally distributed by Amazon MGM Studios Distribution.

Fargo S5 airs from Wednesday 22 November exclusively on SBS On Demand and at 9:20pm on SBS, fast-tracked from the US.

SBS documentaries The Australian Wars and The Swap lead the way in representation and inclusion on global stage with MIPCOM awards

SBS’s leadership in impactful documentaries has received international recognition with The Australian Wars receiving a 2023 Content Innovation Award, and The Swap collecting a MIPCOM CANNES Diversify TV Award, in France this week.

The Australian Wars has received the 2023 Content Innovation Award for Representation and Inclusion - Unscripted, at the ceremony held in Cannes overnight. The landmark SBS series, produced by Blackfella Films, explores and confronts the story of the bloody battles fought on Australian soil as the colonial frontier pushed forward, and First Nations people resisted. The three-part series, directed and presented by filmmaker Rachel Perkins, delivers a compelling awakening to a part of Australian history not commonly known or understood, at a historic moment for the nation.

This is the latest award for the series which, since its premiere on SBS in October 2022, has gone on to receive widespread critical acclaim for its craft, impact, and vital contribution to truth telling. Accolades have included the 2023 TV Week Logie Award for Most Outstanding Factual or Documentary Program, the Digital History Prize at the New South Wales Premier’s History Awards. Gold (History & Society) at the 2023 New York Festival Awards, and the Australian representative in three Asian 2023 Academy Creative Awards categories (Best Factual Presenter, Bet Direction Non-Fiction, and Best Documentary Series). The series is a finalist in the upcoming 2023 Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism to be announced in November. It is also set to appear on screens internationally, selling to networks in Canada, New Zealand, Asia and the United Kingdom.

SBS’s innovative and heart-warming documentary series, The Swap, was also recognised this week, receiving the MIPCOM CANNES Diversify TV Award for Representation of Race and Ethnicity (Non-Scripted) at the awards ceremony held in Cannes on Tuesday night – and was the only Australian production to be recognised in the prestigious awards.

The Swap, Soutrhern Pictures for SBS

Produced by Southern Pictures for SBS, the three-part series documents a bold experiment, pioneered by Ali Kadri, the CEO of the Islamic College of Brisbane, which sees 12 students and families from very different cultures, religions and backgrounds – and with very strong opinions on each other - thrown into each other’s worlds. Over one school term, the three-part series follows the students as they experience the anxiety, excitement and wonder of spending time at each other’s schools and with each other’s families and communities, breaking down social barriers and building greater acceptance, respect and understanding along the way.

SBS Director of Television, Kathryn Fink, said: “We’re exceptionally proud to see these ground-breaking and uniquely Australian stories being recognised for their compelling and impactful storytelling, continuing our legacy in documentaries that challenge perceptions and ignite important discussion - and that also make for inspiring and entertaining television for local and global audiences.

“Congratulations to everyone involved on this wonderful and well-deserved recognition for both series at MIPCOM this year.”

The Content Innovation Awards, in partnership with MIPCOM, celebrate significant contributions to the transformation of the global television industry, recognising those at the forefront of innovation. The Australian Wars was also shortlisted for Best Documentary Series at the awards, with The Swap also shortlisted in the Representation and Inclusion Award - Unscripted category, while SBS original series, Safe Home (Kindling Pictures and Banijay Rights for SBS), was shortlisted for the Best New Scripted Award.

The MIPCOM CANNES Diversify TV Awards are dedicated to championing and promoting diversity and inclusion in all its forms across the international television industry. They aim to bring attention to programs that embrace excellent representation in exemplary shows, across a range of categories for scripted and unscripted content.

The Australian Wars is a Blackfella Films production for SBS, with principal production investment from Screen Australia in association with SBS, financed with support from Shark Island Foundation and Screen NSW. It is distributed worldwide by ABC Commercial.

The Swap is a Southern Pictures production for SBS, with major production investment from Screen Australia in association with SBS, financed with support from Screen Queensland.

The rules are simple but uncompromising: the last person standing wins £100,000.

Ch 4 info

Alone – TV’s most epic, extreme and uncompromising survival experiment comes to the UK this August. The ultimate test of endurance and ingenuity, in one of the most beautiful but challenging landscapes on earth, eleven ordinary people face the ultimate test of survival. Dropped, COMPLETELY ALONE, with NO camera crew, in the remote wilderness of north-west Canada, each of them has challenged themselves to take part in the most pure and extreme competition on TV - Alone. Each person must fend for themselves and survive for as long as possible, equipped with only a handful of basic tools, whilst filming their own adventure. The rules are simple but uncompromising: the last person standing wins £100,000.

Aged from 19 to 58 years old, these competitors are not die-hard survivalists; they are ordinary people seeking an extraordinary challenge, whose lives have brought them to this moment for different reasons. Their stories unfold as their time in the wilderness reveals their truest selves. The series is not only a bare-knuckle survival challenge, but also gives an insight into the human spirit against all the odds.

In episode 1 (TX: Sunday 6 August, 9pm, Channel 4), the ultimate test of survival begins, as the eleven people arrive on the banks of the huge Mackenzie River, in Canada’s wild and remote Northwest Territories.

The competitors are left to fend for themselves and film their own adventure, equipped only with a handful of basic tools. There’s shock and trepidation as they discover the first signs of bears and wolves, and they race to put up shelters and light fires before the sun sets, leaving them in the pitch black night with only the sounds of the wilderness for company.

NHS Worker, Eva, comes face to face with the predator she fears most and builder, Louie, is desperate to go hunting with his bow and arrow - but soon faces a harsh reality check. Alan tries foraging and discovers a taste for pine sap (even if it reminds him of ‘toilet cleaner’). Meanwhile, Mike suffers an injury that could jeopardise his place in the competition and clothing designer Naomi endures the most terrifying night of her life.

Alone has been commissioned for Channel 4 by Ian Dunkley, Commissioning Editor, Factual Entertainment with Alf Lawrie, Head of Factual Entertainment. The series from The Garden, part of ITV Studios, is executive produced by Rachel Bloomfield, Tom Garland, Jo Harcourt-Smith. The Creative Director is Nicola Brown and Head of Programmes is Lucie Duxbury. Alone is distributed worldwide by A+E Networks.
