The Abyss: Rise and Fall of the Nazis takes a fresh look at the Third Reich from a global and current perspective. Why did it take so long before they were stopped? A combination of previously unpublished archive material, historic sources and an international team of experts paint a new picture of Hitler’s regime. The series unpicks the complex sequence of events that boosted a new regime, allowing violence and brutality to unfold on an unbelievable scale.

Rogue Heroes

From the creator of Peaky Blinders, new series Rogue Heroes tells the origin story of the SAS – but not as you know it

Stream first Wednesday 5 April on SBS On Demand and 9:30pm on SBS

Those events depicted, which seem most unbelievable… are mostly true.

From the creator of Peaky Blinders, and based on Ben Macintyre’s best-selling book, Rogue Heroes is a dramatised account of how the world’s greatest Special Forces unit, the SAS, was formed under extraordinary circumstances in the darkest days of WWII. Connor Swindells (Sex Education, Vigil), Jack O’Connell **(**Skins, The North Water) and Alfie Allen **(**Jojo Rabbit, Game of Thrones) lead an ensemble cast with Dominic West (The Wire, Appropriate Adult) and Sofia Boutella **(**Modern Love, Atomic Blonde). The series follows a crew of renegade men who are a self-proclaimed band of oddities, gentlemen, and pirates who rail against the status quo of service to do things a little differently. The series is available weekly from Wednesday 5 April on SBS On Demand and premieres at 9:30pm on SBS.

The all-star cast is joined by Amir El Masry (Industry, The One), Theo Barklem-Biggs (The First Team, Carnival Row), Corin Silva (The Bay, Emmerdale), Jacob Ifan (Bang, The Accident), Dónal Finn (Cursed, The Witcher), Jacob McCarthy (The Last Summer, A.P. Bio), César Domboy (Outlander, The Walk), Miles Jupp (The Great, The Durrells) and Jason Watkins (The Crown, McDonald & Dodds).

Rogue Heroes is created and written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, Taboo, A Christmas Carol), directed by Tom Shankland (The Serpent, The Missing), with Stephen Smallwood (The Serpent, Patrick Melrose) as producer.

Set in Cairo, 1941. David Stirling (Swindells) is an eccentric young officer, bored and frustrated with the failings and shortcomings of the military authorities and their handling of the current war strategy. Convinced that traditional commando units don’t work, a view shared by another young officer, the inventive and disciplined Jock Lewes (Allen ), the pair create a radical plan that flies in the face of all accepted rules of modern warfare and try to convince their friend, firebrand and poet, Robert Blair ‘Paddy’ Mayne (O’Connell ) to join their mission.

Stirling fights for permission to recruit soldiers for a small undercover unit that will create mayhem behind enemy lines. Men of a certain sort. The sweepings of public schools and military prisons, men who do not obey. Men who only need one order. ‘Go. Kill. Return. Go again’. More rebels than soldiers, Stirling’s team are every bit as complicated, flawed, and reckless as they are astonishingly brave and heroic.

With the assistance of Lieutenant Colonel Dudley Wrangel Clarke (West), a master of strategic deception in British secret intelligence in the Middle East, Stirling’s unit gains an identity and a name, the Special Air Service (SAS), but then it’s up to Stirling and his men to prove their strategy of parachuting into the desert and attacking and neutralising enemy airbases under cover of darkness will work.

Connor Swindells said: "The writing is phenomenal, Steven Knight is a genius, so it’s brilliantly written. The characters are flawed, they’re humans as much as they are heroes. There was too much that drew me to this project to turn away from it.”

Jack O’Connell said: “Paddy Mayne’s story is so cinema-worthy, so TV-worthy, that I was already aware of him through being sent scripts and hearing rumours about certain projects that never came into fruition. When this one came along, I was already geared to wanting to be involved.”

Alfie Allen said: “Jock was pushing the boundaries in terms of what he would make his men do. That would not win him fans, but it would later cement his place as a pioneer in SAS history. That was definitely one thing that really attracted me towards playing him - he was such a revered character in the SAS.”

The series was produced by Kudos – a Banijay UK company and distributed by Banijay Rights.

Rogue Heroes will be subtitled on SBS On Demand in Simplified Chinese and Arabic.

The series is a vailable weekly from Wednesday 5 April on SBS On Demand and at 9:30pm on SBS.

Lost City Of Gaul: Unearthing Bibracte

image

Sunday 19 March 8:30 PM

In the heart of the French region of Burgundy, deep in a forest, lies a hidden city that had been dormant for 2,000 years. It’s called Bibracte, the most important oppidum in all of Gaul. That is where the Aedui, a Gallic tribe allied to the Romans, once built a fortified city on top of a mountain.
What did this 10,000-inhabitant ancient city look like? How did the builders manage to erect indestructible fortifications at a time when no other Gallic city featured such protection? How did archaeologists decipher old pieces of wood despite the wear and tear of Father Time? And why did the Aedui suddenly abandon their capital?

Thanks to topographic maps using LIDAR technology as well as spectacular computer-generated imagery, you’re about to discover the evidence of galloping Romanisation, notably through a sophisticated hydraulic system, a forum, and a basilica.

To this day, Bibracte remains a colossal excavation site, the remains of which continue to reveal long-lost secrets. As true investigators, archaeologists unveil the craftiness and the genius of this ancient tribe at a turning point in the Roman Gallic era.

Big Ben Restored: The Grand Unveiling

image

Wednesday 23 March 7:35 PM

The greatest clock tower in the world has undergone the most extraordinary and extensive renovation in history.

Presiding over the House of Commons, Big Ben is not only the most iconic landmark on London’s skyline, but it is also a timeless piece of architecture that symbolises Britain’s democratic heritage. However, after more than a century of exposure to pollution and the elements, not to mention a near miss during the Blitz, Big Ben, or the Elizabeth Tower as it’s properly known, has been in dire need of repair. In 2017, the bells were silenced, and the world’s most famous clock tower was shrouded in scaffolding, to begin the process of restoring Big Ben to its original glory.

The unique access documentary Big Ben Restored: The Grand Unveiling goes behind the scaffolding to tell the extraordinary story of the six-year-renovation. Director of Landmark Trust Anna Keay bears witness to every step of the process. She meets the dedicated team of architects, engineers, historians, scientists, and master craftspeople who are tasked with stripping the tower down to its frame, then repairing or replacing every exquisite detail of this neo-Gothic masterpiece. In the process they discover exactly what Big Ben looked like when it was first built - and it’s a far cry from the sombre, black-painted tower we have known for so long.

Ruthless: Monopoly’s Secret History

Wednesday 29 March 9:35 PM

For generations, Monopoly has been America’s favourite board game, a love letter to unbridled capitalism and - for better or worse - the impulses that make our free-market society tick.

But behind the myth of the game’s creation is an untold tale of theft, obsession and corporate double-dealing.

Contrary to the folksy legend spread by Parker Brothers, Monopoly’s secret history is a surprising saga that features a radical feminist, a community of Quakers in Atlantic City, America’s greatest game company, and an unemployed Depression-era engineer.

And the real story behind the creation of the game might never have come to light if it weren’t for the determination of an economics professor and impassioned anti-monopolist.

Part detective story, part sharp social commentary and part pop-culture celebration, Ruthless: Monopoly’s Secret History presents the fascinating true story behind America’s favourite game.

Saturday 1 April 8:30 PM

Using newly discovered footage and dramatic personal stories from the firefighters who attended the Windsor Castle fire on 20th November 1992 this documentary creates a minute-by-minute account of the battle to save this iconic building.

Many who were there that day reveal what really happened behind the castle walls.

From an apprentice decorator, one of the first to see the fire, and his fearless actions to rescue priceless works of art, to the numerous firefighters who risked their lives to fight the blaze, including one who witnessed a man trapped in a roof collapse and another who thought two of his colleagues had died in a fireball.

Updated 22/03/23

I wonder if anyone else is watching this and what they thought. I found in the first episode, pretending to be in the Triassic period and standing next to a CGI dinosaur it was all quite simplistic and a bit condescending. The green screen work seem poor as well.

Wednesday 5 April 8:35 PM

Michael Palin embarks on a 1000-mile adventure into Iraq, a country he has never been to before.

He boards a train in the spectacular snow-capped mountains of Lake Hazar in eastern Turkey, the source of the river Tigris, which Michael will follow until he reaches the Persian Gulf on the southern most coast of Iraq.

In the bustling Turkish city of Diyarbakir, Michael meets a local Kurdish woman, Dilan, for a delicious local feast and a window into the Kurds’ troubled relationship with federal Iraq.

Further into his chaotic journey to the border Michael’s next stop is Mardin, an ancient town built into the side of a mountain on the steps of Iraq.

The Wonders Of Europe

Saturday 8 April 7:30 PM

At the beginning of the 13th century, Philip Augustus, King of France, dreads an English foray in his capital city.

Thus, he decides to build the fortress of the Louvre, a military architectural gem.

Today, the Louvre is a museum housing the greatest masterpieces, but it’s also a palace, at the heart of power since its origin.

Eight centuries would be necessary for it to look as it does today.

Obsessed with the desire for a Louvre showcasing their power, France’s greatest sovereigns will continually keep on expanding and embellishing it.
