Great line-up of new and returning shows, and the additions to World Movies in 2025 aren’t too bad either.

Given SBS Radio turns 50 next year, you would think there will be lots of celebrations on the radio network. It’s strange that the broadcaster didn’t reveal any details at the upfronts today.

Very decent line up of shows for next year - like 10 and ABC, more shows worth watching than Seven and Nine these days.

I think SBS is focusing on the TV stuff at upfronts because they can sell programs to advertisers (remember, AFAIK radio doesn’t have ads).

Also, ABC usually focuses only on TV at its upfronts, so I would imagine it would be the same generally with SBS, though IIRC SBS has included short press releases on audio in past upfronts.

Absent:

Great Australian Walks
Our Law
Little J & Big Cuz
Eddie’s Lil’ Homies,
Eurovision: Australia Decides
Celebrity Letters and Numbers
Every Family Has a Secret
Slow TV
…and anything with Michael Portillo?

SBS Radio shows do have commercial ads and public service announcements, but the ad breaks are mostly filled with promotions for NITV, SBS on Demand, and programs on SBS TV.

Disappointing food offerings, the days of premium shows like destination flavour and gourmet farmer are a distant memory. The last thing we need is another cooking show with a different “celeb” each week.

SBS News really needs a refresh too. It feels like it is on autopilot and is not making the most of a weakened ABC News under Justin Stevens’ leadership. It needs to be punchier like Channel 4 News in the UK.

Deadline has an exclusive article on Memory Bites with Matt Moran. Global investment firm Globe Wealth will co-produce the show with Big Owl Pictures. BBC Studios will distribute the format and finished series internationally.

The show will include a ‘Memory Box’ segment, in which Moran unwraps surprise items from the celebrity’s past to take them back to their formative years.

Financing saw Big Owl, Moran and Jakob working on an innovative co-production model to secure a pre-sale from SBS. Further cash was raised through a mix of sponsors and private equity, and each of the three production partners retains a stake in the format.

‘They want us to lean in and become better’: SBS aims for hearts and wallets at its 2025 Upfront

Not surprisingly, given its ‘special’ broadcasting remit, SBS presented itself as the alternative network for advertisers at its 2025 Upfront, held on Wednesday afternoon at Sydney’s Town Hall.

We asked the industry what they thought of the SBS Upfront 2025.
