It was Sudden Death Saturday on Seven where, in the afternoon final, Hawthorn eliminated GWS in a close contest that ran overtime and delayed the news by 14 minutes. The average rating of 649k dominated afternoon viewing.

The second Elimination Final in primetime saw Gold Coast, with a last minute victory, eliminate Fremantle averaging 923k. That compares to 855k last year and sees last Thursday’s final still the top AFL game of the season so far.

The final NRL Saturday Night Footy of the season saw the Sharks beat the Bulldogs to almost 500k, down 30k on the previous week. Earlier on Nine, in the afternoon, Test Rugby saw the Wallabies win a thriller over Argentina with just over 300k watching.

In Queensland, Riverfire did very well to average 354k, up +100k form 246k year for its highest ever rating.

ABC’s line up of repeats had Beyond Paradise just make the top 10, up slightly to 369k with Midsomer Murders that followed down 25k to 325. Meanwhile on 10, Selling Houses Australia was the only prime time top 30 entry on a busy night. The rating of 290k was down 20k on the previous week.

Seven News, including a 30 minute bulletin at 5pm in Perth and a late start on the east coast was 50k ahead of Nine at 6pm in preliminary numbers. Earlier, Sunrise made the top 10 with 386k though that was down 40k on the previous week but still 110k ahead of Weekend Today.

RIVERFIRE BY AUSTRALIAN RETIREMENT TRUST LIGHTS UP THE RATINGS

Riverfire by Australian Retirement Trust ignited the Brisbane skyline last night, delivering sparkling ratings.

A record number of viewers tuned in to watch the spectacle that marks the start of Brisbane Festival 2025. This year’s Riverfire by Australian Retirement Trust broadcast was the highest rating of all time.

Nine’s exclusive broadcast dominated prime-time viewing as the No.1 program of the night in Brisbane with Total People and all key demographics, reaching 398,000 viewers (Total TV Reach). Hosted for the first time by 9News Queensland’s new presenting duo, Melissa Downes and Joel Dry, Riverfire by Australian Retirement Trust attracted a Total TV average audience of 275,000.

Kylie Blucher, Managing Director of Nine Queensland and Northern New South Wales, said: “Riverfire is truly an unforgettable night, and this year was no different. We are so pleased to have once again brought this extraordinary event to viewers across the Sunshine State, and the fabulous numbers are proof of how much Queenslanders look forward to this night every year.

“The broadcast was particularly special, marking Melissa and Joel’s hosting debut as a pair, and they did an outstanding job, capturing the beauty and energy of Brisbane perfectly.”

This would have been helped by Seven News starting late due to the AFL over-run. There would have been a big switch over to Nine Nine for those tuning in to see the news.

Thanks - fixed.

The AFL finals did very well for Seven, but exceptional ratings for Riverfire as well.

The two AFL games did great numbers for Seven. And Seven’s News did well too (in prelim numbers).

Brisbane’s Riverfire rating very well too for the one market.

Nine’s NRL doing well to make the top 5. And the afternoon airing of the Rugby got good numbers for the slot too.

The late start to Seven’s news had an interesting effect - assuming the preliminary numbers hold up. While Seven NEws rated higher, so did Nine. Both had their highest Saturday ratings since March.

Meanwhile ABC News had just 373k - its lowest of the year by far.

Guessing some in Melbourne might’ve switched to Nine at 6 who wanted a bulletin starting on time, the game’s result was also pretty much known as Hawthorn had got back on top. But especially viewers in Sydney and Brisbane would’ve changed channels.

So the opposite intended effect of the two AFL finals in-between news possibly occured for Seven. But at least they got a big prime time final, including Perth’s time zone, main channel and local team, as well as Gold Coast’s seeming long-awaited fairytale.

Any chance of a 5 city breakdown for the AFL games?

Sorry, not on days delivered on weekends.

Can you provide for Friday night?

@TV.Cynic ?

See previous answer - Friday ratings are delivered on Saturday so no breakdown.
