One of the closest AFL Grand Finals in recent years delivered in the ratings department as well with 2,465,000 5-city linear audience in preliminary numbers. That included a huge 1.15 million in Melbourne alone as well as 414,000 in Brisbane tuning in for the home team, one of the biggest grand final audiences seen in that market. By contrast the Sydney audience was one of the lowest.

The presentations that followed had almost as many watching and subject to adjustment is one of the highest numbers for the post game viewing.

The result compares to the 2022 final that had 2.179 million metro viewers. It was however lower than the “COVID finals" of 2021 (3,006,000) and 2020 (2,979,000).

The prematch entertainment with 808,000 compared to 729,000 in 2022, 1.46m in 2021 and 1.48m in 2020.

Despite the AFL final scheduled outside of prime time the follow through effect of viewing helped Seven to another big Saturday win. Seven News with +500,000 in Melbourne had its biggest audience of the year while the premiere movie Free Guy did comparatively well.

Meanwhile ABC"s two UK dramas performed and were up on recent weeks.

Earlier Weekend Sunrise was lower than unusual for a Saturday but still ahead of Weekend Today.

We will have to wait to later in the day for regional and 7Plus viewing numbers.

Overall big result for AFL but thought it might have done a bit more considering how close it was. Will be interesting to see once streaming/regional are factored in. I think it will be a big result.

No surprise that number increased from the main match in Melbourne but dropped off a fair bit in Brisbane.

Is there a chance this might get recoded because the presentations were supposed to be 5-6pm but the matched only finished at 5:25pm?

Massive audience for the AFL Grand Final thanks to a close result, but warmer weather in the east coast might have kept the numbers down.

7mate only had a 3.1% share with the continuation of GF post-match coverage topping the multichannels. The GF replay crashed out of the top 20.

Mary Gearin’s final ABC News bulletin was a distant second in the 7pm timeslot, behind Border Security repeat.

No surprises with the big number for the AFL Grand Final.

The Presentations that followed also got big numbers in prelim figures (as mentioned, it was intended to air for the 5-6pm hour, but started at 5.25pm instead). Seven News got big numbers, and did Border Security at 7pm.

The Post Match on 7mate at 6pm (aest) did well too.

ABC did very well from 7pm until 9.50pm. Nine’s Jurassic World did nothing exciting.

Naturally, big numbers.

However yes surprised the GF wasn’t a lot higher given the contest all day, although the presentations being almost identical to the match suggest viewers did not leave, probably the most surprising thing is Seven’s massive prime time shares even though the game was over, that lead-in especially in Melbourne to news > Border (impressive) > first run movie works well and saw the other networks struggle to get attention, looks like I was a bit wrong with thinking they were bad choices.

I think if there’ll be a big lift in numbers, it’ll have to come from 7Plus streaming. And given it’s been 41min, looks like Seven’s research team trying to really crunch the numbers, they’ll be disappointed not to walk away with some chocolates after ‘one of the greatest ever Grand Finals’.

Huge audience as expected in Brisbane, IIRC on par with their ones 20 years ago. Actually surprised Sydney managed over 300k, Adelaide by comparison (even if smaller) a bit weak though. Thought Melbourne might push 1.25 or 1.3m for Collingwood, neutrals and considering the contest, think it has before such as 2009, 2010 and 2011. With 2016, 2020 and 2021 being even higher.

Could Seven perhaps really push to the AFL now, especially when the new deal kicks in, for prime time Grand Finals (or at least twilight), the evidence is there from 2020 and 2021 (albeit yes COVID lockdowns in some areas)?

Twilight 4:15-4:30pm start could be something that satisfies both traditionalists and people who wants a night grand final as it would only be 1.5-2 hours after the normal start time

Sportsindustry online saying it is still the lowest GF ever (broadcast metro) outside of 2022 and 2019, apart from Brisbane being one of the highest. I know we’re waiting for regional/7Plus/VOZ… But looking like this headline won’t be amazing to match yesterday’s amazing match.

Ignoring the timeslot, perhaps Johnson’s point about the unseasonably hot weather (especially Victoria and NSW) was also a factor, added to that a lot hate Collingwood and might’ve been envious and headed down the beach if not the biggest footy fan or not interested in the Brisbane Lions? Again, something a prime time match (whatever start time) could’ve aided with.

I feel just gives Warburton/Seven/Eddie McGuire’s crusade on this too more ammunition now.

We rarely see the rankings of shows against the AFL Grand Final (outside of the primetime one due to covid). Am sure that the share during the day is always massive.

Looking forward to this afternoon when 7+ and regional numbers are added. Are we expecting over 3m?

They’re in (unofficially) from Seven, sportsindustry just posted them online and yep 7Plus went huge, a record for AFL.

I just saw… wow.
If correct, that would be the highest rating GFs of all time?

Tonight’s NRL GF is still a shot at giving the AFL GF a run for its money, presuming it’ll do bigger regional and 9Now numbers, however they’ll need metro to be at a bare minimum 2m I reckon (even then probably need more like 2.1 or even 2.2m to be a chance) and given nearly all SOOs / NRL GFs for a number of years have been below 2m (some as low as 1.6m) it looks unlikely.

I don’t believe so, but should put it up there, might overtake some other GFs from the 2000s now

According to Seven

• AFL Grand Final: 3.75 million total viewers nationally. Reached 4.98 million on broadcast, 756,000 on 7plus.
• AFL Grand Final: Presentations: 3.66 million total viewers nationally. Reached 4.87 million on broadcast.
• AFL Grand Final: On The Ground: 2.74 million total viewers nationally.
• AFL Grand Final: Pre-Match entertainment: 1.2 million total viewers nationally.
• AFL Grand Final: Post Match: 323,000 total viewers nationally.

The “national” audience including 7Plus compares to

2022 Geelong (133) v Sydney (52) Seven Network 2,960,000
2021 Melbourne (140) v Western Bulldogs (66) Seven Network 3,910,000
2020 Richmond (81) v Geelong (50) Seven Network 3,810,000

Will also check the “VOZ” ratings later today.

Almost 5 million in total numbers.

How does this compare with previous GFs? (Is this a record)

I’m not reading it as 5 million.

The total average audience looks to be 3,750,000

Made up of
2,470,000 metro
830,000 regional (for a total of 3.3 million)
441,000 7Plus

The showdown between Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions … scoring an average total television audience of 3.75 million viewers, including 3.3 million viewers nationally and 2.47 million in the capital cities. An additional 441,000 viewers watched live on 7plus – the biggest ever audience for an AFL match on a streaming platform.

Close to 2020! Which was full prime time, as well as COVID and no Victorians could attend (held at Gabba in Brisbane), makes yesterday’s look impressive now. You could argue that potential/lost ~300-500k from metro broadcast was almost made up by 7Plus.

Good ratings for a daytime slot

VOZ is out and officially the AFL GF is even higher.

“Regional” is more than 100k above Seven’s reported figure (going off national and subtracting metro), while BVOD is a slim smidge higher. I’m guessing this is “Rest of Australia” metric which specifically VOZ includes, which is for non-peoplemeter areas such as Darwin/Alice Springs/Nt, Broken Hill/regional Sa, Mt Isa/remote western Qld, Mildura, Griffith and remote Wa.

It’s now higher IIRC than the 2020 night COVID GF.

What a difference BVOD and VOZ makes, I’m now sold!
