Yesterday’s AFL Grand Final that saw The Lions successful defend their premiership with an audience for Seven’s coverage of 4.076 m while the game reached 6.096 m.

That compared to the 2024 overnight average of 4.024 million with a 6.087 million reach when The Lions defeated The Swans.

The Presentations that followed averaged 3.798 m (3.39m in 2024) while the On The Ground rating was 2.968m (2.98m in 2024).

The Pre-Match Entertainment had 1.519 m which compared to 2024’s that had 1.4 million watching (adjusted down from prelim numbers).

The total reach audience for FTA on Saturday was one of the highest of the year at just under 14 million.
Seven’s Post match coverage had 514k (2024 – 384k) while the morning’s Countdown program had 537k (2024 had 504k).

Earlier, Weekend Sunrise averaged 405k then Grand Final Brunch that aired at 9am had 401 k.

Seven News that followed in most markets had 1.93 m to be the highest rated bulletin of 2025 while the first episode of the 2025 season of Healthy, Wealthy & Wise had 628k.

Seven’s movie offering was Die Hard did well to get 366k.

Meanwhile, the afternoon’s Test Rugby with All Blacks V Wallabies averaged 481k on Nine. Later, the NRLW in prime time had 262k with the movie Red Dog just making the top 30 with 150k.

Beyond Paradise was up 60k for ABC with the Beyond Paradise: Christmas Special (2023) on 356k.

Selling Houses Australia was 10’s only prime time entry but the rating of 313k was up 70k week-on-week.

wonder if we will get the 5 city ratings split considering it was a GF? We got one last year.

The live stream audience exploded by more than 300k (meaning the broadcast audience was well down given the negligible difference to last year’s total average).

Seven could have a new record, certainly AFL bvod and is very close to their FIFA WWC all-time record, though I think recently bested by Nine’s Origin.

Some here expected the audience to be up, as the contest was much closer for 3 quarters and while it was, only very marginally. Perhaps indicating the importance of the Nsw market and Qld’s in comparison, while still important, not quite as large. Assuming Melbourne’s audience at a bare minimum held if not went up significantly, both due to Geelong and the contest.

104k over Nine’s NRLW preliminary final coverage.

Still a long way to go.

Massive audiences for the AFL Grand Final despite the final quarter blow out.

The GF’s live streaming figure of 969,000 fell just short of the record held by this year’s State of Origin game three (978,000).

Solid start for the return of Healthy, Wealthy and Wise.

Huge numbers for the AFL Grand Final. And impressive numbers for the various pre-game segments too.

And a great start for Healthy Wealthy and Wise too.

The Wallabies match on Nine did well, especially given it was against the Grand Final.

Selling Houses still doing wonders for 10, which is great to see.

Best comparison is the presentations. 2024 had 3.3mill with the game blown out in the 3rd quarter. In 2025 it’s 3.8mill.

Yesterday also ran overtime with the margin around 40 points when the presentation segment should have started. The game finished around 5:20 when presentation segment should of started at 5pm

“Once again, Chris Fagan’s side proved they were too strong on Australian sport’s biggest day of the year and on top of that, to see Will Ashcroft claim his second Norm Smith Medal was remarkable.

“Throughout the entire season, our 7AFL team both in front of, and behind the camera has worked tirelessly to provide Australians with the best possible broadcast, live and free on Seven and 7plus Sport.

“With 12 hours of live and free coverage on Grand Final Day, which spanned every corner of the MCG and more, we are thrilled that Australian audiences were captivated from 7.00am with Weekend Sunrise, all the way through to the post match celebrations and 7NEWS.

“We want to thank every viewer who has joined us across the season. From the opening bounce at the SCG, right through to the Grand Final post-match celebrations, Australians have embraced Seven and 7plus in record numbers. As we continue with a stellar AFLW season and Finals Series, we also look forward to returning earlier in February for AFL Origin, live and free on Seven and 7plus.”

Seven Network Director of Sport, Chris Jones, said: "Yesterday’s record result across Seven and 7plus Sport was a fitting end to an incredible 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

“With a seven-day of the week strategy, we were bold in our ambitions for AFL coverage in 2025 and we’re thrilled to have delivered the biggest and best moments, including yesterday’s historic AFL Grand Final live and free to all Australians on Seven and 7plus Sport, Your Home of Footy.

Group Managing Director, Seven Digital, Gereurd Roberts, said: “Yesterday’s record audience on 7plus is not only a demonstration of the combination of exceptional content and user experience, but shows how Seven is redefining the way Australians consume live sport.

“It was a fitting way to finish our first season of digital AFL rights, with almost a million new users signing up to the platform since the start of the season in March. And now we have the Bathurst 1000 and a home Ashes series to look forward to.

“The surge in our 7plus audience through the year - driven by premium sport with AFL and cricket, the best news and entertainment, and our premium on-demand lineup - is not only reshaping user behaviour but opening up exciting new opportunities for our clients and agency partners to connect with viewers in more meaningful ways.”

A close game brings a massive audience.

It actually was a blowout in the last quarter, which makes the presentation numbers even more impressive.

Wonder how much higher it would’ve been had the last 20min not been a blow-out, game average could’ve gone above 4.1m and 7Plus might’ve hit 1m. Presentations (which are around that time), which were already well up on last year, would’ve been substantially even greater you’d think.

I’m not sure we’ve had a five city broadcast hit 3m since 2021, when an unbelievable 1.6m in Melbourne alone watched (albeit COVID locked down and curfew). Had yesterday been close until the final siren, it probably would’ve gone close.

Also keep in mind that the Biedisloe Cup attracts half a million viewers.

Had it not been scheduled for Saturday and combined with a close GF all the way to the end (at one point I briefly considered the first-ever overtime), this would have been the most-watched GF ever.

Gotta wonder how many BC viewers were Seven switchers because of the impending/ongoing blowout.

Does Rugby Australia not care about attracting viewers to its premium event?

The game was NZ - RA had little control over timing

Big grand final numbers and the 2:30pm daytime slot is here to stay. Popular with fans. 2020 and 2021 didn’t feel like a grand final to me at night

i feel like a compromise will eventually be made with a 4pm kickoff. The lions vs collingwood clash converted a lot of sceptics and you still have the advantage of calling it a day game, while the end of the game would give 7 the primetime shares that they are desperate for.
