Saturday shares were like a mirror world where SBS was number one and ABC number two. The combination of Australia’s World Cup victory and a State election in Victoria produced the unusual result. One thing that didn’t change, though, was 10’s poor performance.

The World Cup result saw a linear TV audience of just over one million viewers for the number one program of the night. The result compares to 2018 when 1.653 million tuned in for Australia V France on a Saturday night that gave SBS a 30.7% share (27.9% main channel). This year SBS is reporting that some games are seeing 40% of the audience coming from on-line viewing.

Meanwhile ABC News channel was up to 7% while ABC’s main channel was second helping ABC to its best Saturday since the Federal election. ABC’s main channel election coverage made the top 20 with almost 200k watching; that’s a total of 277,000 when combined with the ABC News audience in Melbourne.

Seven and Nine’s coverage of the election missed the top 20. Nine’s election coverage ranked second with less than 40% of ABC’s audience while Seven was 30k behind Nine.

Nationally, Seven and Nine’s main channels were equal while 7Mate’s WBBL final coverage with 102,000 helped Seven into third place on network shares.

Other viewing numbers were depressed with the split schedule for Melbourne. Doc Martin on just over 300k was the top entertainment offering making the top 5.

The WBBL final was Foxtel’s top program on 90k while Sky News’ election coverage had a top number of 79,000.

What a win to SBS on the final night of official ratings.

Figures for Doc Martin and Shetland will have to be adjusted due to late finish to the ABC’s Victorian election coverage.

Wow. Huge numbers for the World Cup match between the Socceroos and Tunisia. And SBS wins the last night of the ratings day of 2022. Impressive.

ABC News did very well too, thanks to the Victorian State Election.

(Side note: @JohnsonTV Doc Martin and Shetland has 0 in the Melbourne market, so i believe it’s already been adjusted).

It’s because the two dramas aired after the election in Melbourne. They should be added to the five-city figures and Total TV figures later on.

Aaah, okay. Im with you now. Didnt know they aired afterwards. Thanks

SBS and ABC had an unusually fantastic night thanks to the FIFA World Cup (between Socceroos and Tunisia) and the Victorian Election. SBS looks poised to secure 3rd spot in the final week of the official ratings period.
Channel 10 languished to 5th spot.
Very low numbers for Victorian Election on Seven and Nine News.

That’s exactly what I was wondering too! SBS Number 1 for the night! Incredible.

Might have to wait at least 8 years for the next win as the Central-North American timezones will mean early to late morning games for us in 2026.

I had a feeling they’d had the top program with a World Cup match before but couldn’t recall if that had been enough to make them most watched network.

Having the whole game in prime time with 90 minutes :scream: of pre match helped too.

Huge numbers for SBS and ABC especially with the Socceroos and Victorian election last night.

Great ratings for SBS and the ABC News channel with sport and election coverage. Both the ABC and SBS beat the commercials with Ten only getting a 3.9% share in main channel and 7.9% in network.

Doc Martin and ABC News were down due to Victoria not getting them instead getting election coverage. In Sydney news numbers were very low for some reason with none being above 130k.

Big night for initialisms

To the networks out there, you don’t need to simulcast with Fox!! The public still want to watch big sport; and you’ll smash the ratings if you keep it to yourself!!!

Well done SBS!

Speaking of the World Cup, the USA V England match at 6am, its good to see that this match was the timeslot winner, beating Weekend Sunrise Early and Weekend Today Early.

Absolutely. Wait til we see the live streaming numbers for the World Cup match. Owning all the rights is so much better.

No network has the next World Cup but with it being in North America we will only get morning kick off times so it won’t be as favorable. SBS does amazingly well with the coverage and hopefully they can afford the next round of rights deals with FIFA. We can’t have an Optus or Fox snapping them up.

Ideally Nine/Stan or 10/P+ can acquire them.
