The AFL again delivered for Seven with its third overnight win of the week with a near 10 point margin. While not quite as high a share as Friday, it was Seven’s best Saturday since September 2022. The result had the biggest impact on ABC and Nine that were both down +3 points with both recording their lowest Saturday shares of the survey. SBS slipped by one but 10 managed to lift its share by two.

The prime-time audience of 416,000 for the AFL compared to 339,000 last year though that was a 4-market result. The first round Saturday in 2021 had 503,000.

Nine’s evening included News at 6pm that was more competitive than recent results. A Current Affair was down to a Saturday low while Space Invaders edged down as well to a season low. Nine’s movie missed the top 20.

For ABC, The Larkins remained as the top entertainment offering of the night on par with the previous week while Under The Vines that followed was down 40k. Grantchester later, slipped down the rankings but still made the top 20.

10 saw all its multichannels perform better than the previous week while the main channel was up slightly. The only top 20 entry was again 10 News.

Meanwhile League topped Foxtel’s numbers again over 300k for the headline match. The top AFL game had 248,000 up from 212,000 in 2022.

At breakfast Weekend Sunrise was up 20k on the previous week while Weekend Today slipped 10k.

The first Saturday night AFL match of the year did well for Seven. Having it air on the main channel in Sydney did well too. The Afternoon Match made an appearance in the top 20 too - airing only in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

Outside the news and sport, the ABC did well with their drama offerings.

SBS World Watch: 0.2%. A pretty good result there.

Sydney got a different game, which was also an hour later - at what point does it actually become a completely different program for rating purposes?

Oh, I didn’t realise that Sydney got a different game. Thanks for clarifying it.
This is where it gets tricky with coding certain shows for the benefit of getting “a better number” for the ratings.

I would imagine Brisbane got the Sydney/GC game too (the timing would have been the same as the rest of the country though because the game was played in Qld).

Not sure there is an easy answer for the issue though - You could make an argument that if you enforce separate coding for this, then the news probably should have separate coding because they’re all different versions.

Is it any different though to say all the news numbers being added together though?

It does say “Saturday Night Football” though (as opposed to “Gold Coast vs Sydney” and “Melbourne vs Western Bulldogs), so I think it’s fine, you’d want one number as market variations will and have always happened, otherwise of course their headline rating would be significantly affected.

—

Also of note, those day time AFL games in Adelaide and Perth, No. 2 overall programs there yesterday, the latter’s starting 10:30am local! Impressive.

Oh look, the only program Ten have in the top 20 is their Early News.

Funny that.

“Thursday Friday and Saturday Night Football” looks better ratings wise (for us in here), than showing us the individual matches. Its good for consistency.

On other news, Weekend Sunrise Early makes another appearance in the top 20. Just wished that their “normal” and “late” counterparts are merged for the ratings, just like what they do on Sundays for consistency.

“Saturday Afternoon Football” is also a combination of two games: Port Adelaide v Brisbane (Adel, Bris) and North Melbourne v West Coast (Perth).

Forgot to add earlier, IMO whenever Saturday AFL does 200k in Melbourne (and well over last night) is a very good result and the contest even blew-out after Half Time last night, so could’ve been even higher. Obviously two local teams helps, but Demons and Dogs don’t have the biggest followings. So a positive for FTA and Saturdays, hope that continues, or whether it was just R1 hype and being the 2021 GF re-match. I’d expect the annual DreamTime At The G marquee game which is always held on a Saturday night to be the biggest home and away, probably 300k in Melb and has done close to or over 400k there in the past - mega stuff for Saturday FTA these days.

Point being?
