Saturday night was dominated by sport with Nine taking out an easy seven-point win. The result was the highest in-survey Saturday share for Nine and up 13 on the previous week. Second-placed Seven stayed competitive but with its lowest Saturday share since the start of the AFL season. ABC was down one to hold onto third while 10 managed to lift by one point while SBS was steady.
With main channel coverage across the network, session one of the Ashes ranked third for the night with +500k watching via linear TV. Nine managed to get four more codings out of the cricket coverage that made the top 20. As a lead-in to the cricket, A Current Affair recorded its highest Saturday rating of the year so far.
Seven News had its best Saturday for four weeks for an easy 6pm win that saw Nine News Brisbane slip below 100k for the first time since week one of the year. The AFL did well to top 300k including +200k watching in Melbourne that, unlike Friday, outrated the cricket in that market.
ABC’s share included the repeat of Vera that outrated the new episode of Sister Boniface Mysteries. It was the best result for Vera since ABC dropped it back into Saturday’s schedule.
10’s single top 20 entry was a Dop House Australia repeat that was up 50k from the previous instalment.

Really surprised 10 haven’t moved to extend Saturdays news to 90 min so it’s consistent all week, would seem a no brainer for the small investment and to have consistent programming year round and have to rely on less repeats of other programs that continuously fail.
Also feel it would bridge the gap better into whatever 6:30 programming they put there.

While it does make sense for consistency, it’s certainly not the answer to 10s prayers as it’s news didn’t even appear in the top 20 this weekend.

Did expect the footy to beat the cricket last night (even though Ashes) in Melbourne, due to Trent Cotchin’s 300th game celebrations for big club Richmond vs another Vic team also in the Top 8 and it was a good match, however did not expect the margin to be that large. Perhaps Australia’s poor start (which continued early on at least last night) could also be to blame, 4 years ago Melbourne was topping 300k on 9Gem!
If last night had been reversed with Friday (two interstate teams and from non-traditional areas), Melbourne’s Ashes would’ve done well over 200k again for sure and Nine would’ve been looking at 40%+ again, while Seven’s AFL in that market could’ve been dangerously close to below triple figures.
So somewhat a blessing in disguise there for Seven/AFL and stopped Nine/ECB from a clean sweep - Adelaide especially and Perth (despite 7mate) were also fairly close however and no local teams.

It is a joke that when you have a program like the Ashes which will rate 500k plus, Channel Nine has the exclusive rights and can’t show it on their main channel every night
7 and 10 would have killed for those figures
Shame on you Nine.
You should not recieve exclusive rights to any sport in the future because now we will all have to suffer the continuous ads and inferior coverage for Origin this Wednesday
Both Cricket and the AFL did well.
Good seeing The Dog House Aus making the top 20 for 10 too. A hard night for them with all the sports around.
The Super Rugby Semi-Final did well for 9Gem too in 11th place (multi-list)

7flix did well last night, all things considered. “The Da Vinci Code”? Perhaps some looking for alternatives, but that’s an odd one.
Exaggeration much? Seven usually dominate Saturday shares with just AFL, which itsself can rate above 500k and the network often goes above 1m metro with news. And these would have to be low numbers for an Ashes anyway, not helped by the contest start.

All of the above because the exclusive rights are wasted on Nine

If Seven and Ten really wanted those figures, they should have stumped up the cash in 2020 when Nine secured the rights. And as proven in 2019 and again this year, it doesn’t matter if it is on a multichannel or the main channel, people will still watch.
If the Origin was on Seven or Ten as opposed to Nine, it would be the exact same situation. Would you say to them they also are not allowed to have exclusive rights to sports for the same reasons?

This thing about everything having to be on the main channel needs to stop - multichannels should be used for this kind of content, especially when there are conflicts - they also allow the FTAs to have their cake and eat it too by trying to attract a wider audience.

The problem is some nights the Ashes are on Channel Nine main channel, some nights they are on GEM.
It needs to be consistent.
My 70 year old next door neighbour asked me if I can come over and set up his TV so he can watch the Ashes tonight.
It is very confusing for many older people especially because you cannot access GEM through Foxtel anymore.
It also devalues the sport
scott:
The problem is some nights the Ashes are on Channel Nine main channel, some nights they are on GEM.
It needs to be consistent.
I agree there needs to be consistency, but that doesn’t have to be on the main channel

What about putting the third State Of Origin match on GEM.
Have do you think that would go down?
If Queensland wins Game 2, then the 3rd can be shown on 9Gem in some cities, if nine believes the Main Channel can get better ratings…
What about it? I don’t see a problem with it.
The networks treat viewers like mugs - they build multichannels with some of the most insipid programming known to man and rather than normalising spreading the content for tactical advantage so as to not cannibalise their main channel numbers. This is one-dimensional thinking.
By all means program to the market’s advantages - but you can still do that and be consistent.

The point is that Nine should have kept the Ashes on the same channel every night so everybody knows where to find it
The way they have treated the sport with so much disrespect is disgraceful
Rant over
And I agreed with you - although I don’t think it matters whether it’s on the Main Channel or Gem.
The current arrangement is disrespectful towards the viewer, not the sport and it could be a whole lot worse - they could choose not to show parts live like it used to be.
