And look where it is now! Most of the Wallabies are unknowns these days…
I think it is women’s professional sport in general that will get the most benefit out of the Matilda’s success, rather than soccer/football itself… I think that will inspire more younger women to get into sport and be the next Sam Kerr in soccer or whatever sport they choose, knowing there is the potential to make a good living out of it if they are good enough.
I’d say that Australian rugby hasn’t really recovered since the Wallabies were pipped at the death by a certain man called Jonny Wilkinson in the 2003 Rugby World Cup final.
While they’ve reached another final since then (2015), they did lose that one to New Zealand, and haven’t won the Bledisloe Cup outright since 2001 or 2002 (can’t remember which year).
Ironically, the game was probably at its zenith until Jonny slotted that dropgoal
We are seriously comparing the Matildas to the 2003 Rugby World Cup?
Wow lol. …
God, the numbers today are dizzying! Would it kill for a standard set of figures reported by everyone? Bodey is right, OzTAM should step in, send a memo to all concerned reminding of accuracy in publishing and also send out a list with the all-time top given the ‘journalism’ this week.
Can’t believe the 2010 Masterchef grand finale didn’t get a mention. Sloppy.
So many variations of numbers doing the rounds today - for the game last night and also for the other big sporting events over the last two decades. There should br more consistency from oztam.
Seems like the claim will be “highest rating in more than a decade”. Still going with the “largest streaming event in Australian history” despite the SOO being higher.
OzTAM should step in, send a memo to all concerned reminding of accuracy in publishing
It’s hard to have accuracy in publishing when we have numbers that are far from finalised - overnights are useless for event television (especially when it doesn’t keep to expected timing).
Hopefully, as the numbers get adjusted later in the week we’ll get a much better picture
For example last night so many people would have been watching a penalty shoot out for the very first time. Now everyone has become a “soccer expert “
Same thing happened after the America’s Cup, but really what did that do for that sport in the long run?
The FWC is a great national moment, but we cant really say what it’ll mean for the future.
News Corp’s Phil Rothfield article has also been updated tonight, removing the reference to ‘biggest TV/sport event since Sydney 2000’ or the like, now stating “in a decade” but have kept the “biggest streaming event ever” bit. Media writers Nick Tabakoff and Sophie Elsworth’s by-lines have also been added.

Yeah, I was being sarcastic
I agree on women’s professional sport and the pathways to an extent. However, everyone gets very excited by AFLW/NRLW and now football, but forgets that netball has offered that for some time as a team sport and women’s tennis and golf for much, much longer than that. The onus is on the sports themselves for not delivering a compelling enough pathway for the product until now…and it’s all very well for FIFA to demand bigger pay cheques for broadcasting rights for this tournament but they have been a big part of the roadblock. Anyway…I’ve gone rather off topic.
We are seriously comparing the Matildas to the 2003 Rugby World Cup?
Wow lol. …
I would have thought it a rather fair comparison. An event hosted in Australia, where the home team did incredibly well and posted incredible TV ratings (ping @Sully)…then it all fell to bits after that for a variety of reasons.
You can point to other events too…Australia went America’s Cup crazy in the 1980s/90s, now who would even know if there’s an Aussie entry next time around?
This is the likely the apex for international football in Australia - it can’t be replicated easily, even when the Matildas come back for friendlies it’s not likely to compare to what we’re seeing currently. Ride the high while it lasts.

I am sure this will prove to be the case. The big winners will be the AFLW and probably women’s cricket and the NRLW - i.e. the sports with an ongoing commercial dominance in Australia that can back in women’s sport

Yeah i can just imagine all the little girls out there begging their parents to take them to cricket after seeing the matildas on the tele

No, the rugby World Cup was nowhere near the same scale as this.
i think we can end this line of discussion now
