Rugby Union TV Broadcast Rights 2021-2024 (Nine/Stan Sport)

If these rights work out for RA, then NRL and Netball will be next, then potentially Cricket (should 9 get back into it).

I would personally hate it, it would just be like how just Netflix turned into 10 other streaming subscription sites. Yes Murdoch sucks, but its $25 for all the sports most Australians want to watch.

Sorry but there should be no monopolies in a free market. News Corp needs to be destroyed at all costs. Or at least made much smaller than it is.

Agreed. I think there are actually people out there who are perfectly fine with the concept of Pay TV, but are totally against News Corp having a monopoly on the industry in this country.

All tests, the Rugby Championship and one Super Rugby game will be on free-to-air, with other Super games and the state club games on Stan.

Stan has also registered stansport.com.au.

Well, it turns out that one of Formerinsider’s stabs in the dark partially came true. Amongst his many claims was this:

Not ideal for rugby fans in NSW, as Shute Shield match go behind the paywall for the first time. You will either have to buy a ticket to the game or subscribe to Stan.

The Sydney Morning Herald article I read said at the end

" We foresee no need to bolster Foxtel with with extra investment, which shows that the business is on a particularly positive trajectory"

Will be announced at 11am Sydney time.

Nine have jumped the gun and announced the deal which is worth around $100 million in cash and contra

The three-year deal, with an option for a further two years, includes free-to-air and ad-free subscription coverage of rugby union, covering all Bledisloe Cup matches, the Rugby Championship, Wallaroos games and Super Rugby. Sign off of the deal from SANZAAR is pending.

The deal will see Stan Sport become the home of Super Rugby, Super W, Wallaroos games, Shute Shield, Hospital Cup, Mitre 10 & Currie Cup, plus SANZAAR Union home games.

Rugby fans will also have access to the greatest moments in Australian rugby history, via an extensive library of games on Stan.

As part of the deal, Nine will broadcast all Wallabies Test matches played in Australia and New Zealand, plus a selection of Super Rugby matches during the season.

UPDATE: Bit more detail about the coverage from the Rugby Australia press release (emphasis added):

All Super Rugby AU matches will be live and ad-free on video-on-demand streaming service, Stan, alongside Super W and all matches of Super Rugby Aotearoa.

Saturday night’s Super Rugby AU match will be live, free-to-air on the Nine Network every week. All Super Rugby AU finals matches will also be live, free-to-air on the Nine Network.

Stan will also exclusively stream every Wallaroos Test, The Rugby Championship, The Bledisloe Cup, as well as all inbound Tests for Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina with select games also broadcast free-to-air on Nine.

The rivalry and tribalism of Club Rugby is also included in the landmark deal, which will see every match from two of Australia’s oldest premier Rugby competitions – the Shute Shield in New South Wales and the Hospital Challenge Cup in Queensland - on Stan.

UPDATE #2: Regarding the Shute Shield & Hospital Challenge Cup, it was stated in the deal announcement presser that Nine will air 4 regular season matches + 1 match each week of the finals on FTA

Wish it was called WWOS and not Stan Sport.

Exciting and a new player to go against Kayo and Optus sport.

They should have gone after the V8’s.

Fox Sports will be looking at re-securing the A-League and Socceroos rights with the money they saved from Rugby.

You’re assuming Fox are still interested in the A-League even though everything they’ve done over the past 12 - 18 months (eg; reducing their coverage, not renewing Simon Hill’s contract, etc) suggests they’ve lost interest

I reckon Stan Sports will go after the soccer and do a deal similar to this with soccer and aleague

This is the first time Nine took on Foxtel on a sports broadcasting deal and won.

No different to the pubs who show the EPL on optus sport.

Nine getting all the rights is the way it should be. It will mean free-to-air games will be live on 9Now, the same as Nine’s NRL games are live on 9Now. Seven’s cricket and AFL deals, which exclude live streaming on 7+, were massive mistakes.
