Not just that, the vast majority of subscribers are existing Optus customers who are “paying” for the service via their internet/mobile services
I don’t think it’s a terrible option either - there’s not much else on the market that would give them a vehicle to prove it prior to the big gamble about their tactics for the next AFL/NRL/Cricket deals. Being embedded into Stan also allows them to make the entry fee very low while the content is still developing, and hide some of the cost in the main Stan sub fee, especially at higher tiers.
They hopefully will spend the next few years building up a library of extra second tier sports - Golf and Cycling would be a few that would fit the model of trying to focus on high value subs. With Fox getting out of a lot of those sports there’s room for Nine/Stan to swoop in.
That said - if I were Nine, I’d look at doing Stan Sports with an ad-supported tier for free with the main Stan sub at least early on.
And imagine during Wimbledon and the French Open if there’s big name match-ups, thrilling matches or if an Aussie goes deep into the Grand Slam.
Combined with RU, Stan exclusivity* (*though I believe there’ll be FTA coverage too) could be a real viewer draw-card for Stan.
With Eurosport exiting Australia there is a range of sports that they could pick up (including a decent amount of pro Cycling)
