I think V’Landys contract comments are aimed at Nine’s threat to walk away in future (when games are hopefully back on in the next month or so thus and available to Nine to broadcast).
Both sides cannot met contract obligations at the moment because the NRL can’t provide any live games for broadcast, and thus Nine doesn’t have any games to air and thus earned revenue to pay for that.
Surely i’m not the only person who thinks sports running these “digital” agencies like the NRL (and AFL) does is a concerning attempt to control the coverage the sport gets?
For all of their shenanigans, at least Nine and Fox are independent from the NRL and would be more likely than not to break stories that don’t portray the NRL in the best light (even if it’s for their own potential benefit)
Because FTA (Nine) allows them that exclusivity. Same with the Seven/Foxtel cricket deal where Seven agreed to give Foxtel exclusive rights to the ODI/T20Is.
The core part of anti-siphoning would be broken if Nine pulled out, a FTA network (with reach of a 50% of the population, so no WIN only deal) has to own the rights and not use them, they can’t just sell it all to Fox. Kayo wouldn’t in any extent meet that requirement.
I honestly can’t tell what the state of the list’s enforceability is since the most recent media laws passed - but the events notice no longer has those ridiculous “all the season except for all the season” clauses in it.
That said, the strongest thing that would stop an all Pay TV NRL is the flood of hate directed to PM Go Sharkies…
The report says Nine and Fox Sports are on the verge of signing a seven-year contract with the NRL. ARLC chairman Peter V’landys is hoping for agreement by Friday (May 15) on the remaining three years of the present contract plus a four season extension. The deal would average almost $330 million a season.
If the report is correct, think it would be a mistake for the NRL to agree to such a long-term extension of the broadcast rights. I can understand say a 2 year extension to give the league financial security over the next few years to ride out the impacts of the Coronavirus.
However, adding four more years to the existing deal gives the NRL no flexibility to adapt to any changes in the broadcasting landscape (eg; if a digital player like Amazon or DAZN becomes a serious player for sports rights in Australia)
It’s interesting would 9 still have 3 games or simulcast deals? I wouldn’t be surprised if 9 had 2 games on Friday night Brisbane and Sydney markets with Fox returning to Monday Night Football.
Pure speculation of course.
Not sure if true but is there a story in today’s paper about power brokers looking to move on Hugh Marks from 9?
Yes, Annette Sharp wrote a 1 2/3 page feature on Hugh Marks in The Sunday Telegraph today, right next to the other exclusive on Nine and Foxtel on the verge of signing a 7-year broadcast deal. Sharp’s feature started with power brokers planning to remove Marks, the rest is about his personal life including split from his wife last November.
