Rugby League

While I think a draft could be utilized by the NRL as a means of distributing talent among all clubs equally, if it does happen then people would easily accuse them of copying the AFL and vice versa. One such example is when the NRL dumped the McIntyre Finals System at the end of 2011 in favour of the finals system the AFL had been using since 2000, for the 2012 season.

More recently, after the NRL launched Magic Round, the AFL hit back with Gather Round, though in that iteration, while all matches are played in the one city (in this case, Adelaide), they’re all spread out across town rather than all nine matches be played at the Adelaide Oval.

The NRL tried to get a draft going back in the 1990s but it got defeated in the courts.

A very similar top 8 system was used by the Australian Rugby League in 1995 and 1996, just without the crossover for the preliminary finals.

Juniors have been on this weekend.
BarTV doing a great job broadcasting the games. Hell of a lot slicker than NSWRL tv.

Interesting appointment, as I think kicking an oval shaped ball is a bit different to a round ball.

They might have been better off with a Daryl Halligan type, a renowned league goal kicker, but time will tell.

Not the first time league has used football/soccer players for kicking coaching,.

Who else has been used?

I’ve seen it happen, just can’t remember who.

Billy Slater did some work with St Kilda in the AFL

Found that controversial 2009 match between the Dragons and Bulldogs on YouTube the other day:

Courtesy: NRL Throwback

This video referee blunder at the death would ultimately cost the Bulldogs the minor premiership, though they would end up reaching the preliminary final, losing to the Parramatta Eels twelve months after finishing last.

The following season (2010), the Bulldogs would miss out on finals altogether while the Roosters, who finished last in 2009, would reach the decider losing to the Dragons 32-8.
