Australia will host the next Rugby League World Cup in 2026.

The tournament was supposed to be held in France in October-November next year, but was postponed after French organisers withdrew in May last year, due to financial concerns from the new national government elected 12 months earlier.

I guess they’ve achieved equality now?

In a feature interview with The Sunday Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield, Peter V’Landys has laid out the key details under the plan for a 20-team competition to be fast-tracked and up and running by 2028.

Some of the blueprint’s main points include:
Clubs would play each other once over 19 rounds; reducing the workload on players by five games from the current 24 matches.
The competition would either break mid-season for a stand-alone State of Origin series, or it would be played after the grand final.
A regular international series would be played in October.

The option of a return to playing Monday night football – for the first time since 2016 – will also be considered.

The NRL could also look at a wildcard series between the teams placed seventh to 10th in the week leading up to the finals. The winners would then go through to the finals series. The top six sides would be rewarded with a week off.

I reckon keep Thursday to Sunday. Monday is the start of the working week. Forget it. Not natural. Sport is meant for weekends.

As for State of Origin, I’ve always been a supporter of the idea that it should be at the end of the season, or even later. A special event over the Xmas period or something. Well away from the comp.

  1. It’s the middle of summer.
  2. When exacly would the players get an off-season? They would need to keep fit from (for some of them) late September until the Origin period, and then club preseason starts in January for an early March start.
  3. People are also quick to forget that the NRL tried the postseason Origin in Covid, and viewership was well down.

Going back to 19 rounds would finally deliver some draw fairness - having some teams play each other within a month/6 weeks and others once only is a joke. A mid-season break for Origin (which I’m not 100% convinced of) would get the season length to something similar to what we see now

Monday Nights might be good for fans, but I suspect clubs will jump up and down about it - it’s a made-for-TV timeslot that makes it hard for clubs to get a good physical attendance, it would need to be shared around so everyone takes a hit on the gate (although we know that won’t happen).

Great contribution. Thanks man.

Thursday Night Footy and the 6pm Friday night game are made for TV as it is. But I can’t see a game moving to Mondays anytime soon.

The State of Origin is a huge success on Wednesday nights. i’m sure Channel Nine would love for it to stay where it is.

There is talk of it moving to Mondays to negate the need for players to back up for club games just two or three days later.

I didn’t think of that, but i like that idea.
