Return to Paradise

Return to Paradise

Mystery series, with a new, unique take, all set against the spectacular backdrop of the Australian coastal landscape.

Australian ex-pat Mackenzie Clarke is the seemingly golden girl of the London Metropolitan police force – with an intuitive approach to detective work, she has built a reputation for being able to crack the most impossible of cases. However, she’s suddenly forced to up sticks and move back to her childhood home of Dolphin Cove, a beautiful, coastal paradise and Mackenzie’s worst nightmare.

Having escaped her hometown at the earliest opportunity six years ago, Mackenzie vowed she’d never come back, leaving a lot of unfinished business and unanswered questions. On her return, she’s still no fan of the town, and the people of Dolphin Cove are certainly no fans of hers. In fact everyone would prefer her not to be there, including Mackenzie herself.

But when a murder takes place in Dolphin Cove, Mack can’t help but put her inspired detective brilliance to good use and determines, despite her reservations, that she needs to make the best of it, including tying up the loose ends with the man she left at the altar six years ago.

Created and Executive Produced by Peter Mattessi, James Hall and Robert Thorogood, Return to Paradise features a crack Australian writing team led by Mattessi alongside Elizabeth Coleman, Alexandra Collier and Kodie Bedford.

A new Australia-set spin-off from one of the UK’s most watched dramas Death in Paradise, the six-part series will be produced by BBC Studios Productions Australia with Red Planet Pictures for the ABC, in association with the BBC

Everything we all love about Death in Paradise - the humour, the beautiful scenery, the likeable characters, the ingenious plots - now in a fabulous Australian setting. I cannot wait for BBC viewers to be introduced to Detective Mack and the good (and not so good!) folk of Dolphin Cove. What a treat we have in store!

The BBC will air Return to Paradise, a new Australia-set spin-off from one of the UK’s most watched dramas Death in Paradise. Filming next year, the six-part series will be produced by BBC Studios Productions Australia with Red Planet Pictures for the ABC, in association with the BBC.

Set in the idyllic, beachside hamlet of Dolphin Cove, Return to Paradise is six gripping, twisting and fiendishly clever murder mysteries – all against the spectacular backdrop of the Australian coastal landscape.

Australian ex-pat Mackenzie Clarke is the seemingly golden girl of the London Metropolitan police force – with an intuitive approach to detective work, she has built a reputation for being able to crack the most impossible of cases. However, she’s suddenly forced to up sticks and move back to her childhood home of Dolphin Cove, a beautiful, coastal paradise… and Mackenzie’s worst nightmare.

Created and executive produced by Peter Mattessi, James Hall and Robert Thorogood, Return to Paradise will be written by Mattessi alongside Elizabeth Coleman, Alexandra Collier and Kodie Bedford.

Return to Paradise follows the success of Beyond Paradise, the UK-set spin-off from Death in Paradise which launched on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in February 2023 and became the UK’s most watched new drama of the year so far.

Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, says: “Everything we all love about Death in Paradise - the humour, the beautiful scenery, the likeable characters, the ingenious plots - now in a fabulous Australian setting. I cannot wait for BBC viewers to be introduced to Detective Mack and the good (and not so good!) folk of Dolphin Cove. What a treat we have in store!”

Alex Jones, Joint-MD of Red Planet Pictures says: “We are so proud of the global success of both Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise – each selling to hundreds of territories, watched by millions, and regularly claiming the position of top rated drama in most of them. Return to Paradise is a brilliantly exciting new addition to ‘The Paraverse’ which we are sure audiences will love just as much. It is a completely original drama but takes the essence of what viewers love about Death in Paradise – the fish out of water premise coupled with the most cleverly plotted murder mystery – and gives it a uniquely Aussie flavour. We are thrilled to already have the BBC on board as broadcast partners for the show in the UK, which means that us Brits will be sure to get to meet Mackenzie and the residents of Dolphin Cove!”

Return to Paradise will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The six-part series is executive produced by Kylie Washington and Warren Clarke for BBC Studios Productions Australia, with Belinda Campbell and Tim Key for Red Planet Pictures and Rachel Okine and Brett Sleigh for ABC. The six-part series is made by Studios Productions Australia and Red Planet Pictures for the ABC in association with the BBC. The series will be distributed globally by BBC Studios.

Cameras roll Down Under on new drama Return To Paradise

The ABC is thrilled to announce that filming has commenced on Return to Paradise, Australia’s original spin-off series of the global smash-hit murder mystery franchise Death in Paradise.

Filming in various locations across Sydney and the idyllic Illawarra coastal region, the intriguing and entertaining whodunit 6-part series will have a distinctively Australian flare, while playing homage to the ‘Paraverse’. The series is produced by BBC Studios Productions Australia with Red Planet Pictures for the ABC in association with the BBC.

Taking charge as the franchise’s first lead female detective is Anna Samson (Dead Lucky, Wake in Fright, Jack Irish) as Mackenzie Clarke. Unraveling the murder mysteries alongside Anna is the exciting ensemble cast of Lloyd Griffith (Ted Lasso, Nolly), Tai Hara (Home & Away, Colin From Accounts), Catherine McClements (Total Control, Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries), Celia Ireland (Wentworth, Total Control), Andrea Demetriades (Mother and Son, The Artful Dodger) and Aaron McGrath (Gold Diggers, Preppers).

Return to Paradise follows DI Mackenzie Clarke (Anna Samson), an Australian ex-pat who’s made a name for herself in London’s Metropolitan Police for cracking uncrackable murder cases. When she is accused of tampering with evidence, Mackenzie returns to Australia, back to the last place she ever wanted to be – her hometown of Dolphin Cove. Having fled the town six years ago, infamously leaving her ex- fiancée Glenn (Tai Hara) at the altar, Mackenzie is not welcome here.

But with no other job options and a unique talent for solving a mystery, no matter how challenging, a reluctant Mack joins the team at Dolphin Cove Police Station. Once a case lands on her desk, she can’t rest until she’s figured it out, and the killer is in handcuffs. It’s that tenacity and work ethic that might just, over time, help Mackenzie win over her new colleagues and the people of Dolphin Cove.

Co-Creator and Executive Producer Peter Mattessi says: “I’m beyond excited to welcome Producer Di Haddon and our two fabulous directors Mat King and Tenika Smith who are coming together with our amazing cast to bring the world of Return to Paradise to life. We are having so much fun creating this brand-new mystery series that brings an Australian twist to one of the globe’s most successful television franchises. So is this a spinoff from the original series? Or is it a completely new show in the same style?

It’s a spin-off, yes.

If you scroll up a few posts it details more about the series and how it will tie into the original.

Im wondering how it’s a spin-off though. Neither the actress Anna Samson nor the character Mackenzie Clarke have been in the original show.

Are her bosses in London going to be the same ones in Death in Paradise? Is that the connection which makes it a spin-off?

I’m just trying to figure it out. If it’s constantly going to be referencing the original series then i won’t bother.

You don’t have to have previous characters to appear for a show to be considered a spin off.

NCIS Hawaii started from scratch without any of the cast members appearing in other NCIS shows.

24 Legacy was a spin off from 24 and no characters from the original appeared.

Hmm. OK. They’re obviously breaking the rules of what a spin-off always was.

I agree. Very loosely but just saying it does happen on the odd occasion.

I guess this is going to be the loose link which will qualify it as a spin-off.

Series 1, Episode 1 of 6

Sunday 8 September 7.30pm

Brilliantly clever Australian ex-pat DI Mackenzie Clarke leaves London under a cloud of suspicion and returns to her hometown Dolphin Cove, where her tenacity & esoteric investigation methods help her solve unsolvable murders.

Return to Paradise follows DI Mackenzie Clarke (Anna Samson, Dead Lucky, Wake in Fright, Jack Irish) an Australian ex-pat who’s made a name for herself in the London police force, working under former Detective Inspector Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon, Death in Paradise), for cracking uncrackable murder cases. When she is framed for staging evidence, Mackenzie returns to Australia, back to the last place she ever wanted to be – her hometown of Dolphin Cove.

Having fled the town six years ago, infamously leaving her ex- fiancée Glenn (Tai Hara, Austin, Colin From Accounts) at the altar, Mackenzie is not welcome here. But with no other job options, and a compulsion for solving the mystery, no matter how challenging, a reluctant Mack joins the team at Dolphin Cove Police Station. Once a case lands on her desk, she can’t rest until she’s figured it out, and the killer is in handcuffs. It’s that tenacity and work ethic that might just, over time, help Mackenzie win over her new colleagues, and the people of Dolphin Cove.

Mackenzie Clarke is thrust into her first case when local royalty Stuart Granger washes ashore with a knife in his back in the middle of a surf carnival. Mackenzie must rely on the residents of Dolphin Cove to help her solve the case. It’s a pity they all hate her…

Sunday 15 September 7.30pm

A famous wellness influencer drops dead in the middle of a packed fun run, so DI Mackenzie Clarke finds herself delving into the world of wellness to solve the murder.

It’s the Dolphin Cove Fun Run, and tragically local Curtis Faleafa collapses of an apparent heart attack at the finish line. In an incongruous coincidence Curtis left Mackenzie a cryptic voicemail right before his death. And if there’s one thing Mackenzie Clarke believes, it’s that there are no coincidences.

Could poison be behind Curtis’ death? But how could someone slip the poison into one cup of hundreds during the fun run, and ensure it would make its way to Curtis?

Colin is not sure he’s ready to let Mackenzie take the lead on this case, but she easily outmanoeuvres him, and he finds himself out of his dream house (the beach shack she offered him), his dream job, and paired with the person most antithetical to him in existence. And Colin’s not the only one not sold on Mackenzie. Her image with the Dolphin Cove residents is still as bad as it gets.

Glenn’s cousin Trevor isn’t making life easy, and Mackenzie’s still getting disrespected on her own property from a gaggle of trespassing bathers. At the very least not everyone is hostile – sweet natured Daisy (Andrea Demetriades) is at least pleased to see Mackenzie, and even defends her to Colin when he complains about his new ‘partner’.

It’s a bit unsettling for Mackenzie to discover that her ex-Glenn has a partner too… but she’s determined to focus on the case.

Mackenzie’s investigation takes her into the world of Curtis’ partner Jade McCready (Naomi Sequeira), Dolphin Cove girl turned globally successful wellness influencer. Jade beat cancer as a schoolgirl, and again as an adult, and has built her empire on her story: that JADE-branded supplements helped her beat cancer when traditional medicine had failed her. She stands to benefit to the tune of Curtis’ half of the imminent $40m sale of JADE Limited to private equity. And she’s not the only one who stood to benefit from his death.

Sunday 22 September 7.30pm

Three hairdressers return from lunch to find their boss, Bianca Bailey, has been killed. The method is strangulation, but the murder weapon remains a mystery that Mackenzie is determined to untangle.

Things are looking up for Mackenzie – the people of Dolphin Cove are starting to thaw towards her, and Philomena has offered her a permanent job… even if Mack isn’t sure she wants to take it. Mackenzie’s even co-parenting her dog child Frankie with ex-Glenn. And she’s finally getting on with Colin… sort of.

Beauty salon owner Bianca Bailey (Airlie Dodds) gives her clients hair to die for… and someone’s decided to return the favour, killing her in her office in her salon La Belle Dauphine.

Everything points to strangulation, but the method remains a mystery. Bianca was very much alive when she waved her employees Tahnee, Skye and Jade off to lunch, but when they returned an hour later, her body was sprawled on the office floor.

Suspicion initially falls on Bianca’s dodgy landlord Troy (Jason Chong), who visited La Belle Dauphine while the girls were out, but clever Mackenzie knows all is not as it seems. Motives abound, but no opportunity… great hair can hide a thousand flaws, and in this case could the truth be hiding in plain sight?

Felix is uncomfortable when Reggie takes something from the crime scene, and grapples with a crime of the past. Can the grown-up Felix make up for his youthful transgression? And Mackenzie has some making up to do of her own with Glenn. Can she own up to her past and make things right?

I’m very concerned - as a lover of the Death In Paradise franchise - that there have seemingly been no preview screenings sent to critics, and therefore no reviews.

That has me worried that this could be an absolute stinker. Please prove me wrong, ABC.

Ignore me - I am obviously an idiot.

A review
