The NFL baptise the super bowl winning coach in gatorade every year, surely if its good enough for the NFL its good enough for the Catholic Church ![]()
LOL poor Father Justin. ![]()
Pope Francis has elevated Melbourne Bishop Mykola Bychok to the position of cardinal, during a grand ceremony attended by hundreds of people at St Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican.
At the age of 44, Cardinal Bychok becomes the youngest member of the College of Cardinals, Australia’s highest-ranking Catholic, and the first cardinal from Australia since George Pell.
Rename the university get rid of the religious element our of it and problem solved.
Problem is the place is run by nuns, brothers and academics on land owned by the three archdiocese and who rely on funding from the church and the government.
Even better solution - ban religious orders from running education institutions and getting government funding.
Very important breaking news. Will be interesting to see if the Catholic Church shifts and goes more conservative after Francis being more progressive than most popes in recent times.
Was good news that Archbishop Anthony Fisher was not named a cardinal in recent times so the will have no say. I know a few priests and others in the archdiocese of Sydney and he was said to be very disgruntled in being over looked.
I’m an Anglican, so I know from experience that taking the Roman Catholic church in a liberal direction will likely empty the pews very quickly. I think a conservative Pope is likely to be elected, tbh.
But the R.C.C has so many problems with much of its doctrine, regardless. It needs to jettison the non-Biblical accretions (i.e. Papal infallibility, Clerical celibacy, Marian theology) and get back to basics. And reaffirm those basics without shame.
Intriguingly, in the UK the Trad Catholics and Pentecostals are growing very fast (a large % of this is due to immigration), while liberal C of E parishes are dying. The Quiet Revival: Gen Z leads rise in church attendance
What a ridiculous comment. Churches have been emptying for years and churches are closing down and properties being sold off. If anything, the strict conservatism of the church is what turns parishioners away.
All the surveys and evidence is to the contrary. Conservative churches are much more likely to survive or flourish, liberal ones die.
But a failure to deal with abusive leaders regardless of the theological persuasion will kill off your church or organisation in no time.
Whilst I tend to agree with your overarching comments, of late the Catholic Church has seen a slight resurgence under the papacy of Francis. His sense of compassion and humility drew people back to the church. His advocacy for refugees and the environment have been well received and shows a side of Christianity that Pentecostals and evangelicals and conservative white people particularly from the US, hate.
There’s this fabricated nonsense that Christians have been marginalized. Ironically, the people that say this are the people who are marginalizing those on the fringes and the downtrodden.
The previous poster shows very little Christian values in his ill-informed commentary. Just really hate filled stuff.
Tell me what exactly is anti-Christian about what I have said?
For the record, I’ve been involved in helping Asylum Seekers and the homeless. I also believe we need to reduce emissions to ameliorate climate change.
One of Francis’ legacies is doctrinal confusion on many matters. While on some issues he was right on the mark.
I’m not going to pretend that I’m not happy with the news that the Pope is dead because as someone who was sexually abused , I cannot support or fundamentally mourn for someone who promotes the seal of confession to hide abuse crimes conducted by priests that harmed children and affected their lives.
Jbar is right in the sense the domination of religion is problematic and a lot of churches are facing swift backlashes because of the church abuse scandal.
Again if people choose to ignore the dozen or crimes committee by the Catholic Church and the Vatican then fine but I know morally where I stand without the approval of the dickhead that was the Pope.
