Regional TV History (pre-aggregation)

This was after aggregation so it was same as the other commercials TNQ and RTQ, and ABC at least. SBS might have taken some time to catch up.

Yes - have an analogue recording:

Though there were large areas of no coverage, notably from north of Rockhampton up to around Sarina, about 300 km. There is almost nothing there.

I did an analogue band scan and these were the other Sunshine relays I could receive - they match the listing above for Gympie (Black Mt) and the southern Sunshine Coast. The southern site also hosted relays of the Brisbane commercial stations.

Looks like you had pretty good analogue reception bayside too (assuming you were still there then(.

Yes reception was near perfect from a least one of the relays for each network. You could use the Brisbane relays if you wanted instead of Mt Coot-tha. There were a lot of overlapping signals that could be impacted by atmospheric conditions.

SEQ took Meditation Medication - is that the same show that had the old god botherers? Was that the same show that NRTV had/made? Or did SEQ have their own version?

Also, what a silly name for a show.

Usually these shows are five minute words from the Bible read by priests from local churches. TV8 had Thought for the Day and GMV6 had Morning Meditation both of which were just that.

I dont know about SEQ, but DDQ had the same version as NRTV. I would assume it may have been as NRTV showed SEQs Country Clipz in 1990, possible as a program swap/program sharing arrangement Pre-aggregation

Omg. I used to get those program guides posted to me as a kid!! Flashback!!!
Was Sun 60 a UHF frequency or something? (Sorry, just read the chat above.. I missed all that.. I got excited when I saw the old SEQ tv guide)

This was a full 30 minute show. The presenters and singers looked like they were ready to meet God rather than talk and sing about God. Must’ve lasted to 1996?

I know NRTV/Ten NNSW had it on early Sundays after aggregation. I remember because I was up early to watch rep basketball that aired on Ten from Wollongong at the Snakepit. I loved my basketball as a kid.

I think once Bruce Gordon took over DDQ it was only on during playout. Happy to be corrected if I am wrong. I believe Country Clipz aired on NRTV until end of 1991, but Medication Medidation didnt continue past 1990 on SEQ.

The irony about Medication Meditation being removed from DDQ was that it was on DDQ many years before NRTV.

Our of curiosity, what happened to RTQ7’s religious program, Images. I know it was still appearing in TV guides in 1990, buti noticed in 1991 that QTV started airing Racing Roundup in Rockhampton after RTQ dropped it

This is a fairly accurate description.

It aired on SES 8 and WIN SA into the early 2000s. I can’t remember when it stopped, but it may have been in December 2003 when WIN SA started taking the national WIN feed.

It even appears that it survived on Brisbane’s Channel 31 into the 2010s!

I wonder how many programs produced by regional stations would have continued to be produced had the regionals been financially stable enough to continue as independently owned entities.

Many regionals produced more than local news and it would have been interesting how they might have tied these programs into their schedules.

Again if we look at NRTV, in 1991, the year aggregation began (official date 31 December 1991), other news. they produced local productions Gold Coast Review. Midweek and Beachwatch. It would have been interesting where these would screen if they existed now.

It would have been interesting for the Nine and Seven regional stations had they remained independently owned and operated.

Below is how the ‘Coffs Harbour Advocate’ covered aggregation in Dec 91 (NBN) and Apr 92 (Prime).

31 Dec 1991

An ad for NBN

30 Apr 1992

This ad for NRTV in Dec 1991 had me perplexed given they were the incumbent in the area.

Prime had to prioritize regional Victoria over northern NSW in its aggregation rollout, because of their AFL rights they wanted the Victorian stations to get up and running before round one in late March.

And this is how the ‘Northern Daily Leader’ covered the advent of aggregation for Tamworth and surrounding areas.

So did NBN go 24 hours from the get go or was it shortly afterwards?

I think it was from the get go across all regions.

Edit: a few days of the Tamworth TV guide for 1st week of 1992.

“Prime television will remain on VHF Channel 0”. Channel 0 was only a translator. Channel 9, the main signal, doesn’t even get a mention? Was its reception so bad in Tamworth?
