Regional TV History (pre-aggregation)

No, it was prettyv good.. I had relatives in South Tamworth and i remember watching TV there and their antenna was pointed at Mt Dowe and reception was near perfect.

interesting too that it seemed like people in Tamworth also getting fortuitous reception from Capital and WIN UHF translators in Coonabarabran

Just thought of something else.

Perhaps Channel 0 only got mentioned because the other 4 channels didn’t broadcast from Bald Hill where Channel 0 was, they set up at Mt Soma, 30 kms south west of Tamworth, but Prime never did broadcast from there during the analogue era.

Prime did set up on analogue at Mt Soma (eventually, perhaps, maybe not in time with the others. This is from 1999)

I also find it interesting too that channels continued for as long as they did to stay on the VHF band. This was despite the push for them to migrate to UHF to free up VHF for other purposes

They got a licence for it, but i don’t think that was ever switched on.

Prime also already had VHF 11 from Quirindi to cover the southern areas too.

ah ok fair enough

The push to move services away from VHF was in the 1980s. I think aggregation (1990s) and running digital TV in parallel with analogue (2000s) put enough demands on capacity that VHF had to be retained?

Like what?

Other than 3-5 for FM, and 5A for Defence, but don’t see what else 6-11 might be used for back then.

VHF was retained for digital in the capital cities and some country areas.

It was dependent on where you lived - south of the Peel River, it wasn’t too bad, on the northern side, it was mixed.

Yep - I had friends who were able to get the channels from Coona with an additional antenna

And from memory was only Mono audio

I’m pretty sure they did end up broadcasting from Soma

My old man got one installed at our place in East Tamworth around 1990 so we could watch the NSWRL on Capital (Prime/9&8 must’ve stopped showing rugby league a season or two prior to aggregation).

I think Prime still showed the league up until aggregation, but only 1 hour highlights from 6.30 Sundays. Not the comprehensive 90 min to 2 hours that 10/Capital showed.

I’m almost certain Prime weren’t showing Friday night football at least.

Yes, probably not Friday nights, just Sundays. I’ll have a look tomorrow and see if i can fund a guide.

Thanks if you get a chance that’d be awesome.

Someone send that to 702 Drive…

Where’s NRTV? Wasn’t NRTV there from the get go or did they thought people should consult the Capital listings?

2NM? Who thought 2NM was receivable in Tamworth? I tried and couldn’t get it!

NRTV didn’t start in Tamworth until later in January.

2NM had a good signal in Tamworth in the 80s at least.
