The Morning Crew is from Traralgon (Sale). The Morning Rush is from Warrnambool.
Thanks @webguy , another poorly served market where the commercial stations think they can get away with no local breakfast on any of their assets and expect the market to grow.
Pure ego and delusion.
I wouldâve thought that 594 3WV would be booming in from Horsham with its 50kw transmitter. You are right that sometimes multiple ABC local radio is included. Wangaratta (also an ACE duopoly) included both ABC Riverina and ABC Goulburn Murray, when it was issued in June. I am curious as to who nominates the ABC local station(s) - ACE or the ABC. Does anyone know?
Maybe the surveyors do depending on what the responses are? And that some listeners may not really know which ABC station theyâre actually listening to?
I think itâs likely most donât know - which in itself is a problem.
For example my father lives in the Wide Bay and listens to âthe ABCâ yet seems to listen mostly to ABC Local but sometimes on RN, but I think he thinks theyâre the same thing lol. When heâs on ABC Local I donât think he thinks of it as âlocalâ anyway as mostly it comes from Brisbane.
I think the ABC has to pick a lane. Either theyâre going to have proper local ABC stations or just revert to State-based stations, but donât do a half-arsed âlocalâ station. Anecdotally, and I know itâs only a sample of one, but my father doesnât seem to care about local content on the ABC and seems more interested in State and National content.
Most of the ABC stations are local at Breakfast like for example ABC Central West but take a state feed at other times with the bigger markets like Newcastle being more local. But usually the state wide content that most ABC local stations take is different from 702 ABC Sydney which is far enough. The fact is the ABC doesnât have the funds for any more localism. They were planning on having a national news TV bulletin on the weekend which has since been stopped.
I do wonder whether that is an anomaly in NSW though compared to some other states, due to the long-time presence of 1233 in Newcastle as a primary station in its own right. Some (not all) of the statewide daytime certainly originated/s out of Newcastle for a while, Iâm not sure thatâs the case beyond afternoons these days.
But otherwise, I know when travelling regionally that I get a bit confused about what actually is the local station, given multiple copies of ABC Local come in through the big AM blowtorches (Mt Canobolas; 648 and 684 in the north-east and north-coast, etc - the south side of the state less so because the likes of ABC Riverina are FM-first now) - but usually it doesnât matter because the local programmingâs been reduced to a trickle compared to what comes out of Sydney or Newcastle.
Xtra Insights survey any commercial or ABC station in or adjacent to the licence area - in this case, youâd imagine this would include ABC Wimmera (Horsham) and probably even ABC Radio Melbourne.
Adjacent community stations, SBS and any other stations fall into an âother stationsâ listing.
AFAIK is up to the ABC which of its station/s they publish, hence why ABC Riverina is mentioned in Wangarattaâs book (what with 2CO being the heritage Local Radio service for the region), but ABC Melbourne is missing from, say, Bendigo.
Today, weâre off to Bundaberg:
Hitz 93.9 maintains its top position with 31.8% (+1.1 from 2021), followed by Triple M with 16.5% (-1.4), 4BU with 11.5% (-0.8) and ABC Wide Bay with 10.9% (-1.1).
In the demos, Hitz is #1 in the under-65s, with 4BU topping the 65+.
In breakfast, Hitzâs Matty & Trace dominates with 33.6% (+1.7), followed by Triple Mâs El & Joe at a distant 2nd with 17% (-1.1). Hitz dominates in all other timeslots, well ahead of other stations.
The âOther Stationsâ ratings this survey is at 19.6%, up from 14.9% in 2021. Much of that increase would be towards the local launch of 102.5 The Breeze, which occurred after the last survey was conducted.
A great result for Hitz. What has happened with 4BU in the last few surveys? I always thought 4BU was a powerhouse of Bundy. I see Triple M has lost ground since last survey. What has changed since 2021?
I think the answer to both is Rebel and Breeze.
I forgot about Rebel and The Breeze.
The âOther Stationsâ ratings on among the 40-54s, 55-64s & 65+ age groups are as follows:
40-54s: 22.6% (+5.2)
55-64s: 26.8% (+7.0)
65+: 21.6% (+2.7)
Yes the only other stations are Kix Country and a couple of community stations. Coral Coast 94.7 has a reasonable profile I think.
Today, itâs back to VIC in Colac:
This yearâs Colac survey covers a different survey area to that of its previous 2018 survey, hence why the previous figure is not shown. But here, weâre going to include it. Hereâs the 2018 survey for reference: https://www.commercialradio.com.au/RA/media/General/Documents/Surveys%20for%20Regional/COLAC-XTRA-INSIGHTS-PUBLIC-SURVEY-RESULT.pdf?ext=.pdf
Mixx remains at #1 with 37.6% (+13.6 from 2018), followed by 3CS with 11.8% (-1.5), and ABC Melbourne with 11.4% (-4.4).
In the demos, Mixx is #1 in the under-65s, with 3CS topping the 65+.
In breakfast, Mixx Colacâs own Jimmy & Lippi is #1 with 39.2% (+15.6), followed by ABC Radio Melbourneâs Sammy J (Charlie Pickering on Fridays) with 12.3% (-4.1), and The Morning Rush on 3CS with 11.9% (-2.5).
The âOther Stationsâ ratings this survey is at 30.6%, which is down 4.4% from 2018.
That ABC Melbourne entry is dubious? I reckon more are likely to listen to the local ABC Western Victoria on 107.9 or maybe 594.
I think 774 is still considered the local ABC station for Geelong, Colac and the greater Surf Coast.
Even the emergency signs on the Princes Highway between Geelong and Colac say to tune to 774 in an emergency.
Interesting that Colac has a local breakfast show on Mixx, but places like Warrnambool, Hamilton & Horsham get a networked breakfast.
According to Fmscan.org the next highest signal strengths in Colac after 3CS are 3RN and 3LO Melbourne at 125km distance - of course different parts of the service area would differ. Next are 3RPH Warrnambool and 3AW then 3WV at 222km
Dire for 3CS - especially when the 55+ is the only part getting them the win over ABC. Convert to FM, play music. 3AWâs signal I think is good in most of the area, people will just go to the source if they want talk, and Iâd guess on those shares, already do.
Why did the ABC bother with their expansion of NewsRadio? No oneâs listening and theyâve used up so many frequencies on it. Especially as Triple J/ABC Classic listeners have to rely on Ballarat or Melbourne frequencies, both which would hardly make it into town.
