Regional Radio (non-SCA)

I remember 2BS had full race coverage back in the 1980s.

Yeah when I went in 20-8 B-Rock did it, I’m guessing no campers so they aren’t bothering, it’s pretty annoying because there’s no radio calls anywhere.

Bill said no? No clients for commercial viability?

Midwest Radio’s repeaters 99.5 and 101.1 are off air at the moment.
Maybe they are finally upgrading the audio from the horrible low bitrate?

Looking at Lava, it appears that C91.3 are now doing a “Ten from Then”-type feature at 9am weekdays, playing songs from a certain year.

The Sea FM building no longer has a sign on it. It’s been replaced with a black and white ad for the stations breakfast show. Mind you the signage was for the previous logo so maybe a temporary solution.

In what location?

I’d hazard a guess and say the Sunshine Coast. I noted the same thing on Friday.

Sorry, I should have mentioned where. On the Sunshine Coast.

If the above were to occur, then Nine would have to offload C91.3, as its Campbelltown RA1 licence area is almost entirely overlapping with the Sydney RA1 licence area, where it already owns two stations (2GB & 2UE).

With that in mind, I could see C91.3 being most likely bought by Grant Broadcasters.

Nine could argue they could keep C91.3, using ARN’s existing ownership of The Edge 96.1, WSFM and KIIS in the Sydney market as a precedent.

If ARN can retain The Edge with Sydney RA1’s 5.56% overlap into the Katoomba RA1 area, there should be no reason for Nine to be prevented from retaining C91.3, with the same licence area having a smaller overlap (5.12%) into Campbelltown RA1.

There is one other problem though. In Katoomba RA1’s case, this current arrangement meets the minimum number of media voices of 4 (ARN, Seven, Nine, 10), whereas if Nine are allowed to keep C91.3, that would see Campbelltown RA1 fall below the minimum number of media voices, in which there would only be 3 (Seven, Nine, 10).

Also, the overlap should be measured the other way around, as in from a smaller licence area to a bigger licence area. In this case, Katoomba RA1 has a 76.22% overlap with Sydney RA1, whilst Campbelltown RA1 has a 85.89% overlap with Sydney RA1.

Maybe C91.3 will be on DAB radio if Nine keeps it. Move the studios to the same building as 2UE, 2GB. Its a bit sad if this does happen, C91.3 currently does a pretty good of being local in this day and age. My gut feeling Nine treat the station like 2ue, just a more modern version of it? Minimal shows, just music.

If they force a sale of C91.3 do you think Nine Media will fight to keep it? Or Radio isn’t the core business of Nine and just let it go?

In which case, ARN would have to divest itself of Katoomba, no?

Can’t see Nine being particularly fussed about WIN’s radio assets - more likely we’ll see i98 and C91.3 on-sold to Grants.

Good point, do they have a local newspaper than can make up the 4th?

SCA seemed keen to buy i98 from WIN a couple of years ago.

iirc, there was a condition placed on the C91.3 licence when it was issued that the studio had to be within the licence area. I wonder if that condition is still current?

If that’s the case, then that would eliminate the competition between i98 & Wave FM, therefore allowing both stations to have distinct music formats from one another, which would benefit listeners in the Illawarra region.

No, they don’t have its own daily newspaper.

This case is different. WSFM is actually licenced to Western Suburbs Sydney. There’s still a >30% overlap so between Katoomba and Western Sydney, so there’s an exemption in place of which little details are know - but the reason is because the 3 stations are each in different licence areas and the common ownership has been in place for over 20 years.
