Regional Affiliation Swap 2021

If you ask me there is somewhat interesting comedy programming on 10 SHAKE.
But WIN don’t let us have it in the regions do they.
Fingers crossed for an SCA/10 Deal, that is the most likely way we’ll get 10 Shake.

SCA probably would pass on 10 shake like they do with 9Rush unfortunately

With the affiliate negotiations if we’re going to get the new channel its going to be now. Its how it worked with 9Life.

Darwin doesn’t carry 9Rush yet. It’s an internal problem on Darwin’s end as a large amount of tech is still operating at Blake Street. It will come eventually.

9Life was launched not that long after metro in Darwin.

Darwin is a metro market is it not?

No. It’s a regional market.

Whats that about then? Being a capital city that means metro doesn’t it?

Nine Darwin is owned by network, followed by Seven owned by SCA and 10 DDT being in a joint venture between SCA and Nine.

ABC considers Darwin “rural” and pays their staff large salary bonuses for working in a rural area.

So Metro and Rural status is about population not because of whether its the capital or not?

“Metropolitan” is defined in the Broadcast Services Act - other places are regional - including Hobart.

metropolitan licence area means a licence area in which is situated the General Post Office of the capital city of:

(a) New South Wales; or

(b) Victoria; or

(c) Queensland; or

(d) Western Australia; or

(e) South Australia;

The NT isn’t even a state so Darwin isn’t even a state capital, their population is also quite a bit less than Hobart which is a state capital but also isn’t listed as metro and is only regional.

The entire state of Tasmania has a smaller population than the Australian Capital Territory (which is effectively Canberra), and Canberra is designated regional.

It’s a somewhat arbitrary delineation which made sense at the time it was written.

Is it? Tassie used to be around 500,000 and ACT around 300,000?

Can’t really see any broadcast licence areas outside the main five being considered “metropolitan” anytime in the immediate future though, since they’ve all got a population over 1 million while #6 is a few hundred thousand behind (and probably likely to remain so for a while, with pandemic border issues likely to put people off migrating to Gold Coast/Tweed at the moment).

If the 2021 RegionalTAM Universe Estimates are anything to go by, Canberra (likely including some of surrounding NSW, but still…) is a larger TV market than Tasmania by about 30k or so - with both having total individuals figures over the 500k mark.

Again, as I have said time and time again, there should be no difference in the channels and programming between Metro and Regional. It is thanks to people like Prime Media Group, SCA (Somewhat) and Old-Mappy WIN that there is a difference.
Fortunately, provided the Nine-WIN Deal goes ahead, we will then be one step closer to equal programming across the board as Nine will go regional and SCA will adopt the TEN Name…

In an ideal world, yes.

But given that the Seven Queensland and Nine Darwin/NBN experience isn’t quite on-par with those of their major metropolitan counterparts, I’m not convinced that regional Australia will ever quite have 100% the same TV viewing experience that the five largest markets enjoy for various reasons.

There are major issues which divide metropolitan and regional Australia that actually need to be addressed and have equality achieved (think the quality of healthcare, roads, education, etc.) long before we get the city networks owning and operating the country ones…but this of course is obviously a very long debate for another time and topic.
