The best we have is a CRA engineering note but that fits the CRA reality that their members really don’t want to be forced to change their original PIs (same reason why they rejected implicit linking to DAB, which is also explained in that).
That doesn’t help the last-two-digit PI issue, and although it provides a method of assigning alternative codes (which use A-F hex digits) but I’m not sure the CRA process recognises the last-two-digit issue in that.
The weird thing is that Nova Entertainment in Sydney changed their Smooth 95.3 FM RDS PI code for reasons unknown this year after looking at our RDS list, but didn’t also check the last two digit issue table or perhaps understand it & potentially created an AF switching issue with NEW FM under tropo enhanced propagation conditions with the change.
Rebel/Breeze should run a new sweeper: ‘The choice of the discerning media nerd.’ I reckon we give them more publicity here than they get in any other forum! But of course they deserve it.
The weather wasn’t kind yesterday. We lost the main FM array and an output stage of the primary 90.5 transmitter. 92.1/90.5 running normal power now but back on the standby FM antenna.
Checked RDS AF on a drive around SW Tamborine. As you have a Forester, I took our 2023 Forester. It doesn’t AF switch seamlessly every time, but we’ve occasionally noticed that with the Forester on other stations too. We’ve got the factory radio (which is slightly deaf on FM) with Harmon Kardon speakers - which on a side note, has quite disconcerting stereo imaging/reflections in the driver’s seat…
On a TEF portable radio we had with us, 100.6/92.1 were AF switching both ways seamlessly.
In other RDS news, we’ve now added RDS to Kooralbyn 103.3 & 102.5. They are synced with 92.1 & 90.5, with seamless AF switching.
Every Breeze/Rebel network transmitter south of Cooktown that serves at least 1,000 people, now has RDS with Now Playing metadata.
The communal standby FM vertical dipole position & orientation doesn’t favor the north, and is skimming the northern tree line.
As it may take a while to source & replace components of the main mixed array, Rebel is adding a standby vertical dipole in early Jan, above the Fresnel tree line & better positioned for northern sector coverage.
Looks like work continues for Breeze 92.1 and Rebel 90.5. Both are back up to more normal reception in suburban Brisbane. RDS is affected atm with just station names showing. No song/artist info.
Thanks for the report! Last night we moved from the communal standby FM vertical dipole, to our own new standby FM vertical dipole which is higher on the tower and better oriented to favor the north sector.
Necessary as it may take some time to repair our main circular FM array.
A 3 hop digital STL is the main feed to Mt Dunsinane. Three of the four link sites have diesel gen, but one (Laheys Lookout) doesn’t, so the link is down. Our backup link feed doesn’t currently carry song metadata.
Energex crew doing amazing work given the extent of SEQ line damage. RDS RT will return with mains power - possibly sooner.
With Vision Christian radio using SEN’s spectrum in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, it looks like SEN / ARN have more spare DAB capacity in Brisbane for at least 2 more stations, where Vision is currently leasing spectrum.
It would be great if Rebel Media could also lease some DAB spectrum from SEN / ARN in Brisbane, which would give a combined coverage of FM/DAB for Rebel and Breeze, from the Tweed to Caboolture, covering most of Brisbane and Gold Coast, Hinterland, Logan and Beaudesert.
Us Mediaspy members should apply for a self help retransmit as was done within the Emerald licence area and they ended up streaming Triple M Brisbane or Rockhampton or both?
