Ratings: VOZ reveals the complete picture of Total TV viewing in 2024

In 2024, Australians consumed more than 15 billion minutes of broadcast content each week, with BVOD (Broadcast Video on Demand) accounting for 12% of total network viewing, primarily via connected TV.

Each week, 72% of Australians were reached by broadcast TV or BVOD, with over 10% of viewing exclusive to BVOD. BVOD consumption continues to be driven by under 55s, with 25-54s making up 50% of the total.

Viewing surged during the Paris Olympics, fuelled by an average of 2.3 billion minutes of live BVOD viewing across the two weeks of the Olympics, more than 2.5 times the weekly average across the previous four weeks.

OzTAM CEO Karen Halligan said Australians still have a huge appetite for broadcast content.

“BVOD and broadcast TV continues to reach a vast majority of the national population each week, with BVOD viewing particularly popular with under 55s,” Halligan said.

"The report also demonstrates the strong growth of BVOD viewing, which is included in VOZ data to give the most accurate view of Total TV.

“The nation’s love affair with sport also continues – the viewership figures from last year’s Olympics show that global sporting events are a massive drawcard for Aussie viewers, driving a significant uptick in BVOD viewing in particular.”

I bet you YouTube and TikTok get more screen time than Seven or Nine for under 35s

Indeed. And when you consider the quoted figure that 72% of people are reached by free to air TV by either broadcast or streaming, that leaves 28% who aren’t. And while a small portion of that 28% might not be watching anything, I’d except most of those people to be streaming all manner of things which aren’t from a traditional Australian broadcaster.

New data out in the UK goes like this 4 4 screen viewing (tv, tablet, phone, pc)

  1. YouTube
  2. Netflix
  3. TikTok
  4. BBC
  5. ITV
