Ratings: Nine Network half year report 2022

Nine is again the number one network in all key metrics at the halfway point of 2022.

We have dominated the national conversation with the era-defining Ash Barty win at the Australian Open to the record-breaking season of Married At First Sight and top-rating local drama in Underbelly: Vanishing Act.

We continue to be the place where Australians share in the moments that matter. Nine is number one in 25-54’s, 16-39’s and Total People.

This lead extends in the BVOD space, with 9Now dominating with over 50% share in demos across the commercial FTA’s and 49.7 in Total People.

Hamish Turner, Director 9Now and Programming, said: “We are proud to be the home of unique, genre-defining content that challenges, excites and engages millions of Australians. 2022 delivered Ash Barty’s historic win at Rod Laver Arena. With 3.835 million viewers it is the highest rating program of the year and the highest rating Australian Open Women’s Final of all time. Nine is home to the most watched series in the country in Married At First Sight and the most popular reality series in Lego Masters.

And we have only just begun, with family favourite Australian Ninja Warrior launching tomorrow night and T he Block: Tree Change set to air in the coming months. Not to mention two more exclusive State of Origin matches and the NRL Grand Final.”

What’s with the old 7+ logo being used?

9Now’s dominant BVOD share in the first half was due to three exclusives: Australian Open, MAFS and Love Island UK. Losing one of these and its commercial share will fall below 40%.

And 7 has the Commonwealth Games coming up so 7+ will increase.

There’s so much spin ill all three ratings reports

“Lies, damn lies and statistics”…

I wouldn’t say lies… but being selective in how and what they report.

I’m guessing Seven have taken out January and the two week ‘Easter break’ from calculations?

No - it seems to me that Seven have not included live viewing whereas Nine includes 7day catch up and live.

That is ridiculous then, these services are for live and catch-up, even Seven’s events which skew live (Commonwealth Games coming up for example which if Tokyo is anything to go by) surely they’ll include them.

7 is referring to 2021/22, not just 2022…

Seven’s 7plus is #1 nationally, with a 45% share of the commercial free-to-air BVOD market in 2021-22

Nine’s claim that it is winning the ratings thrown into doubt by official OzTAM figures

Nine Entertainment chief executive officer Mike Sneesby’s claims the network is winning this year’s ratings has been questioned, with official survey figures showing rival Seven is in front.

Announcing the company’s annual results last week, Sneesby said: “In free-to-air, Nine network has drawn further ahead in the 2022 ratings year to date, once again dominating the key demographics”.

However figures from television ratings company, OzTAM, show Seven is No. 1 in the ratings in both the year-to-date metric and in the official TV ratings year, which began on February 6.

An industry source, who did not wish to be named, said Nine had looked at “selective” data that wasn’t a fair representation of the year’s ratings.

The source said some of Nine’s figures failed to include Seven’s strong ratings from the Commonwealth Games.

In previous years when the Commonwealth Games have been held, the event has always been included in official ratings data.
