BRISBANE Market

The 9Network continues to assert its dominance as the No.1 network in 2024, leading with Total People and all key demographics in the Brisbane metro market, which includes the Gold Coast.

By the end of the 2024 ratings calendar, the network’s sustained popularity is reflected in a commanding Total People network share of 46.4%, surpassing Seven’s 35.3% and Ten’s 18.3%. The 9Network also achieved a clean sweep across all advertiser-preferred demographics, including People 25-54, People 16-39, and GS18+.

2024 Ratings Victories

9News

9News , presented by the state’s leading and longest serving co-presenters, Andrew Lofthouse and Melissa Downes, reinforced its position as the most trusted and dominant local news bulletin, winning the 2024 ratings year. 9News Monday to Friday 6.00pm-7.00pm topped the ratings for 37 weeks out of the 40-week calendar.

In the Sunday to Saturday 6.00pm to 7.00pm timeslot, which is presented by Mia Glover on weekends, the combined bulletins achieved a dominant 34 weeks out of the 40-week period.

9News 4.00pm

Adding to the stellar results, 9News 4.00pm, presented by Aislin Kriukelis and Alison Ariotti, also achieved significant success, winning every survey week it was on air, proving its competitive strength in the market.

9News Gold Coast*

9News Gold Coast , presented by Paul Taylor and Eva Milic, secured its position as the city’s premier and most trusted local news service with an undefeated performance in the ratings - dominating every week of the OzTAM survey period. This remarkable success resulted in a Total People Share of 55.2%.

A Current Affair

A Current Affair maintained its dominance in the 7.00pm timeslot, securing the 2024 ratings with its captivating storytelling. The program won every survey week it was on air, consistently attracting a strong Total TV Average Audience of 150,000 per episode.

Today

Brisbane wakes up with Today, the city’s leading breakfast program, consistently outpacing its competition. In 2024, Today dominated the market, leading for 35 weeks out of the 37 surveyed weeks it was on air. Today’s continued success year-on-year reflects its strong connection with viewers, solidifying its position as the go-to morning program.

The 2024 State of Origin Series scored the top three highest-rated programs of the year locally, with the 2024 NRL Grand Final securing the fourth spot.


In 2024, Nine Queensland continued to set the standard for premium local programming, delivering captivating content that resonates deeply with Queenslanders.

In a pivotal year for Queensland, Nine Queensland provided unparalleled coverage of the State election, ensuring viewers were fully informed every step of the way. The comprehensive coverage began with The Great Debate – Election 2024: Queensland Decides, presented by 9News Queensland in collaboration with Brisbane Times and 4BC. The debate quickly became the No.1 program locally with Total People and all key demographics, drawing the attention of Queensland voters with a Total TV Reach of 457,000 and a Total TV Average Audience of 264,000. 9Now attracted 17,000 BVOD viewers, further expanding the debate’s reach and influence.

As Queenslanders cast their votes, Election 2024: Queensland Decides was led by 9News Queensland’s Melissa Downes and Andrew Lofthouse, live from its Mount Coot-tha studio and featured an expert panel of political heavyweights: Kate Jones, Shannon Fentiman, Deb Frecklington, and Tim Mander. Alongside 9News Queensland’s State Political Reporter Tim Arvier and 9News’ Chief Political Editor Charles Croucher, the team provided sharp commentary and in-depth analysis as election results rolled in. In response, viewers turned to the special broadcasts, with the Vote Count securing a Total TV Reach of 515,000 and a Total TV Average Audience of 163,000. Additionally, 9Now drew 17,000 BVOD viewers.

Returning for its fifth year and ninth season, My Way continued to captivate audiences with its powerful stories of ordinary Queenslanders doing extraordinary things. From the culinary delights of the Sunshine Coast to unforgettable and unique experiences of outback Queensland, the series spotlights the vibrant spirit of the Sunshine State. The season launch dominated its timeslot locally with People 16-39 and Total People, reaching a Local Total TV Reach of 161,000 and a Local Total TV Average Audience of 78,000.

In August, Riverfire by The Australian Retirement Trust lit up the Brisbane sky as well as TV screens across the Sunshine State, delivering sparkling ratings results. Nine Queensland’s exclusive broadcast dominated primetime viewing as the No.1 program of the night in Brisbane with Total People and all key demographics, reaching an impressive 303,000 viewers (Local Total TV Reach). Hosted for the 14th consecutive year by 9News Queensland’s Melissa Downes and Andrew Lofthouse, the Riverfire spectacular attracted a Local Total TV Average Audience of 198,000.

With 150 episodes of The Actually Really Very Difficult Show airing on 9Go!, Nine Queensland continued to connect with younger audiences, enriching its programming with fresh, engaging content.

Meanwhile, Creative Generation, Queensland’s flagship arts education program, marked its impressive 20th anniversary with a weekend of special broadcasts on Channel 9 and 9Now, including a documentary celebrating its lasting impact on young artists and the 2024 Creative Generation performance.

Beyond entertainment, Nine Queensland’s commitment to making a difference was evident through its impactful programming to support charity initiatives. In April, The 2024 Nine Telethon raised an extraordinary $6.8 million for Mater Little Miracles, a crucial initiative that supports Queensland’s tiniest and sickest babies. The Nine Telethon, which spotlighted the life-saving work of Mater’s Neonatal Critical Care Unit, demonstrated the community’s unwavering generosity and the profound impact of the program. With The Nine Telethon’s 10th year on the horizon in 2025, Nine Queensland’s dedication to supporting the Mater Little Miracles will only be taken to greater heights.

Mater Giving Day rallied Queenslanders to help contribute over $1.9 million, fuelling life-saving medical research to improve diagnosis and treatment for patients now and into the future. More recently, Nine Queensland, along with the support of Today, rallied behind McHappy Day on November 16, to help raise vital funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Through these diverse productions and initiatives, Nine Queensland remains dedicated to serving its audience with quality content that entertains, informs, and makes a lasting impact on the community.

In 2024, 9Now reached more people in Brisbane than any other commercial free-to-air BVOD platform. Each month in Brisbane, an average of 643,000 people tuned into 9Now — a 33% increase compared to 2023 STLY.

Nine’s highest rating program of the year was the 2024 State of Origin Series Decider, which recorded a Total TV Audience of 867,000. Match 3 saw an audience of 223,000 on 9Now - the largest for a rugby league game in history.

Our next highest rating program of the year was Game 1 of the 2024 State of Origin Series, which recorded a Total TV audience of 811,000 (including 205,000 on 9Now). Game 2 was the network’s third highest rating program of the year with a Total TV Audience of 648,000 (including 182,000 on 9Now). This year’s State of Origin Series recorded an Average Total TV Audience of 774,000 and enjoyed year-on-year growth of 42% in BVOD and 9% in Total TV.

The 2024 Women’s State of Origin was the most successful to date. The Decider saw the highest result for a Women’s Rugby League match with a Total TV Audience of 252,000 (including 44,000 on 9Now). The 2024 series recorded significant year-on-year growth across all screens: 47% on Broadcast, 133% on BVOD and 57% on Total TV.

The NRL Grand Final between the Melbourne Storm and Pentrith Panthers was the 9Network’s fourth highest rating program of the year with a Total TV Audience of 575,000 (including 157,000 on 9Now).

The Vegas Opener of the 2024 NRL season was a major success, recording a Total TV Audience of 204,000 with growth of 83% in BVOD and 27% in Total TV.

The Australian Open Men’s Final recorded a Total TV Average Audience of 223,000, with a BVOD Audience of 37,000. The Men’s Final saw year-on-year growth across BVOD of 45% and 23% in Total TV.

The Block - Grand Final is the highest rated overnight commercial non-sports program of the year and recorded a Total TV Audience of 296,000.

Enjoying a remarkable 20th season, The Block achieved a Total TV Average Audience in Brisbane of 237,000 per episode. An average of 53,000 viewers watched each episode on 9Now. This year’s series of The Block recorded year-on-year growth of 13% in BVOD and 14% in Total TV.

Married at First Sight achieved a Total TV Average Audience of 313,000 per episode. An average of 131,000 viewers watched each episode on 9Now. This year’s series of MAFS recorded year-on-year growth of 27% in BVOD and 6% in Total TV.

Lego Masters achieved a Total TV Average Audience of 146,000 per episode. An average of 27,000 viewers watched each episode on 9Now.

Travel Guides achieved a Total TV Average Audience of 194,000 per episode. An average of 34,000 viewers watched each episode on 9Now. In 2024, Travel Guides achieved year-on-year growth of 24% in BVOD and 19% in Total TV.

The Summit achieved a Total TV Average Audience of 114,000 per episode. An average of 23,000 viewers watched each episode on 9Now.

Big Miracles secured a Total TV Average Audience of 74,000 per episode. An average of 21,000 viewers watched each episode on 9Now.

Love Island Australia is once again a smash hit on 9Now, averaging over 54,000 viewers per episode on the BVOD platform. Love Island Australia achieved year-on-year growth of 7% on BVOD.

9News is the No.1 Total TV Metro weekday news. 9News (M-F) has seen a Metro Total TV Audience of 189,000 (+18% year-on-year). In the BVOD space, 9News has dominated its opposition, winning every single week of the year. Each night, an average audience of 16,000 viewers watch 9News via 9Now, compared to a 7News audience of 10,000 on 7Plus.

Today has also completely dominated its breakfast opposition in the BVOD space. Each morning, an audience of 7,000 viewed Today via 9Now, compared to 5,000 watching Sunrise on 7Plus. Today on BVOD saw year-on-year growth of 50%.

This has to be one of the, if not the most impressive local media releases ever seen, especially for ratings and a market like Brisbane, something you’d expect 10-15+ years ago. Even challenging their own network release from HQ/Sydney/Melbourne! If not somewhat unnecessary perhaps. Kudos to Nine Queensland management/publicity :clap:
