The official TV ratings for 2017 were released earlier this week with the Seven Network in first place with 29.6% of the 5-city audience. Nine took out second with 28.1% ahead of Ten with 18.0%, ABC with 17.1% and SBS on 7.2%.
However, the results, for especially Seven and Nine, were markedly different in each of the five markets. In preliminary figures* Nine was well ahead in the two NRL markets with Brisbane delivering the network’s highest network share of of 31.1% while Seven’s best results were in Adelaide (33.1%) and Perth (35.0%). Melbourne was the closest market with Seven winning 29.2% to Nine’s 28.2%.
Ten’s best results came in Sydney and Perth while ABC rated best in Adelaide and SBS was narrowly best in Melbourne.
Perth viewers preferred multichannels the most with a 34.5% share of the audience. They were least popular in Sydney with a 27.6% share.
The biggest change from the 2016 results was a 3.4 share point increase for Nine’s main channel in Brisbane, somewhat offset by a decrease in Nine’s multichannels, leading to a network share up 2.8 points. This was mostly at the expense of ABC (down 1.6) and Seven (down 1.1).
