bit cheeky to put the orange glow around the black ring to match up with the colour bars!
Gotta make it stand out I guess.
Yeah a plain black ring on a black background, would make it look like there were only four Olympic rings (as Ann Sanders once mistakenly said).
yeah…
For no particular reason, a week of TV0 ads from TV Week, February 1986. Can you guess which show/ad belongs on which night?
Were they placed on the same page as the TV Guide for the days they were to air, or just randomly in the magazine?
given they all say “Tonight”, yes the day they appeared in the magazine listing for the day they aired. (Of course, though, Neighbours was on five nights a week so that ad could have appeared on any of those five days. The use of the word “premiere” is a bit misleading as the show had been doing for a month on TV0/Ten by that stage)
Yes thanks, that’s what I thought, I thought for a minute you were suggesting that they weren’t placed on that day’s page and thus were not very clear in what ‘Tonight’ referred to.
I’ll have a go; mostly guesses though some are a bit clearer for shows I might have watched more.
Highway to Heaven - Sunday
Magnum - Saturday
Prisoner - It was on Tues and Thurs I think but Dallas was on Tuesday so that would make the ad for Thursday probably
Dallas Tuesday
A Team Wednesday
Return to Eden - that leaves Monday
I remember Return to Eden was Mondays, Dallas was alwaysTursdays.
I can remember Prisoner was Monday and Tuesday at one stage and Tuesdays and Thursdays at another time. I think what might have happened was they initially avoided going up against Cop Shop which was successful on its nights. Then when Prisoner had strong ratings, they purposely put it up against Cop Shop.
Here we go…
Saturday: Magnum PI
Sunday: Highway To Heaven (this one surprised me. In Melbourne, HTH was always a Friday night series)
Monday: Return To Eden
Tuesday: Neighbours
Wednesday: The A Team
Thursday: Dallas
Friday: Prisoner (I suspect Prisoner was past its prime by 1986, and some stations were losing interest in the series or dropping it altogether. TV0 I think (I can’t be sure) was one station that dropped the show ahead of its eventual axing later in the year)
Return To Eden at 7:30pm Monday surprised me a little been going up against A Country Practice, noting when Richmond Hill started it was 7:30pm Wednesday and Thursday and the same with E Street. I knew that for most of its run The A Team was at 7:30pm Wednesday on metros, but I thought it might have been at 7:30pm Monday with Tour Of Duty replacing it.
It was a good qiuz though
just fyi, in February 1986, BTQ7 had A Country Practice at 7.30 Sunday and Monday, Sons And Daughters at 7.30 Tuesday and Wednesday, and British sitcoms (repeats) on Thursday and Friday.
In Melbourne I think they swapped ACP and S&D, with S&D on Sunday/Monday and ACP on Tuesday/Wednesday.
Sons And Daughters being on decline at the time was the other reason I thought Return To Eden might have been at 7:30pm Wednesday. Also noting that The A Team’s popularity was starting to wane by 1986, with The A Team screening at around 11:30pm Wednesday night in either 1987 or 1988.
Wow, this is gold!
Certainly some subtle hints of a re-brand in the ‘returning in 2000’ promo which aired in 1999.
I wanted to create a separate topic for these sorts of things, but a blink and you’ll miss it playout error on Seven Sydney in 2001:
