Good Times! The Classic Hits comeback at RDE26

To start the Classic Hits Comeback session at RadioDays Europe 2026, Andy Ashton the content director of Greatest Hits Radio UK had us all stand up and think about what our favourite musical decade was.

He started with the 50s and 2010s – no one sat. The 60s and 2000s had a couple. the 90s and 70s had quite a few but the 80s left standing was easily half the room. TikTok and TV shows like Stranger Things have made the 80s the sweet spot of music lovers at present.

Greatest Hits Radio plays hits starting from The Beatles emergence in 1964 through to a spattering of 90s. The 70s and 80s are the core.

There is so much scope for this concept in Australia, with some examples like [Capital Radio Network’s] 70s Music and MMM and Gold 80s featuring on DAB+ as well as the ACE Radio Network’s 4BH, 2UE and Magic 1278 leaning into the genre (with more talk and ads though). A clean and clear music centric classic hits station, with nothing past the 90s can work and provide, as Andy perfectly summed up, ‘moments of surprise and delight every single day.’

I went to fill up my taxi at the Mobil servo in Coffs Harbour this morning and noticed they were streaming Coast FM Mandurah in the shop and on the speakers outside. Some local businesses have been known to stream Sydney stations but not something from WA.

I imagine they were probably trying to stream something else but nobody noticed or had the time to change it?

Sounds about right

If so, then I wonder what they were trying for? Coast FM 96.3 is the one that comes to mind- though that has a completely different format to Coast FM Mandurah. Coast FM Warrnambool does have a similar format but that would also be a strange choice in Coffs.

it basically is correct

i know when i worked in a small retail outlet i could play whatever i wanted within reason, i used to stream CFNO from Marathon, Ontario

Yes I agree.

As per news in the “Community Radio” thread that 2SER Sydney might be forced to close in July (which I hope doesn’t happen), but IF that happens, it made me think about what should happen with the 107.3 frequency in Sydney.

Should it be retained as a community radio licence, should the ABC try to move 2BL 702 to it, or should a 7th commercial FM licence be auctioned off?

Knowing what happened with the Lancelin Frequencies when the Perth ABCs converted to FM, you would have to move 2WKT Bowral to a different frequency (most likely 92.5 which was 2WYR’s old frequency) if the new ABC/Commercial Service was at 150kW much like the other Sydney Stations.

Ordinarily, the frequency stays assigned in the LAP for another community service, should one apply for a TCBL. But it’s very unlikely 2SER will surrender their license - more likely the service will be cut to the bare minimum to sustain itself until they find enough funding to rebuild. A diverse range of funding sources could be found eventually, including more sponsors and donors.

I looked up the LAP and ACMA database. The LAP allows 50kW, but ACMA has them listed as 14kW. Broadcasting from the uni’s roof has always been a challenge. Some other Sydney community stations are 150kW, but I don’t know if 2SER is limited due to neighbouring stations or their sub-par location (or both).

FBi is the only one licensed for 150kw, but 2MFM.92.1 is just 15kw, I think 2OOO 98.5 is 25ke, the others are 50kw.

FBi only appears to be operating at 50kw, I read somewhere that they can’t afford (financially) to be able to operate at 150kw?

You were reading my mind. I was thinking the same. However I think they will try to hold on to it.

The LAP shows 150kW for a few, but the ACMA database shows lower power.

Doesn’t UTS (and formerly Macquarie University) fund part/all of 2SER 107.3FM?

Yes but all this closure talks come up because UTS said they can’t fund it 100% by themselves.

This feels really bizarre.
