Vic Government launches female-led sports radio show

The Victorian Government’s Office for Women in Sport and Recreation has collaborated with Broad Radio to launch a four-part weekly sports series, in a bid to break barriers within the sports broadcasting landscape.

Play Big will air next Saturday, March 15 for four weeks, hosted by gender equality campaigner and Outer Sanctum host, Emma Race, Broad Radio’s Rana Hussain, as well as a panel of established and emerging commentators.

It aims to elevate women’s voices in sports broadcasting; Broad Radio reasons that women’s sport is breaking records, and so too should the people reporting on it.

The show will air Saturdays 9am-11am on Broad Radio. Episodes will be repurposed into podcasts, and featured on Broad Radio’s platforms, as well as the Government’s Change Our Game website.

Episodes will feature athletes, trailblazers, and fans, with the aim of proving that women’s sport is here to stay.

good luck. i’m in Brisbane

i put it down to a mix of nervousness and a “hurry up and lets get it over with” thinking. I know i just want it done.

on another topic a few years ago i brought a Life Gear USB Crank Radio Torch for extended power outages. although i have a digital radio with spare batteries (a panasonic D10) its always good to have a backup

There are widespread outages on the ABC this morning. From my TEF reception, at least Newcastle, Batemans Bay, Illawarra, Central Western Slopes, Upper Namoi, South Western Slopes, Manning River and Central Tablelands are all down.

Interestingly, ABC Classic Illawarra works but not ABC Classic Newcastle.

The signals are all on air just broadcasting a “We apologise for this disruption to programming” message on loop

Triple J Newcastle (and Wollongong) also affected, though interestingly Classic Taree is not affected.

I wonder why only some services are affected and not others.

98.7 was also down when I checked. Checked again just now and it’s still down.

So any sites that get there audio via Codec won’t be affected, and neither will any sites RXing and retransmitting from a site fed with codec.
Any sites that are Sat Input only will be affected

Surely Newcastle of all places could do an off-air relay from Sydney if needed. I guess there’s no backup at these sites in case of satellite failure?

Yes, they could use Sydney DAB as a back up, but not 105.7 (too much hash).

It does surprise me a bit that an area the size of Newcastle doesn’t have an alternate feed (eg both codec and satellite)

The radio feed on DVB-T might be an option too?

True, one they could use almost nationally too.

They could cut costs by not needing to run codec and separate radio sat feeds when it’s already there on the DVB-T feed and they could just split those off?

Apparently that is affected as well.

ABC News Radio stopped working on AM and DAB in Melbourne this morning when I was in the car. I didn’t check if any other stations were affected however.
