Random Radio

DAB transmitter power at Artarmon is 3.6kW each (9A, 9B & 9C), I’ll have to lookup the antenna gain.

DTV at Artarmon all transmitter’s run at different power levels, I can’t remember off the top of my head, will check tomorrow, DTV antenna is probably about the same gain as the DAB one.

DTV transmitter power at Gore Hill is higher because it has a lower gain antenna.

FM antenna at Gore Hill is the same as Artarmon, but transmitter power’s differ because of capacity issue.

I’ve checked out things at Artarmon this morning, both DTV & DAB antennas have roughly 12dBd gain already taking into account system losses in cable, combiners, etc. like the FM the gain varies across the band, note the DAB antenna has beam down tilt on it to stop the signals going over the license area boundary & without that detail which I can’t post here any coverage maps won’t be entirely accurate.

As I said yesterday, the DAB transmitters run at 3.6kW for 50kW ERP out of the antenna.
The DTV transmitters run at different powers, to allow for different coax lengths to the antenna, but average them at 3.35kW for 50kW ERP out of the antenna.

Great reading this by chance, seems impressively efficient to operate at 3.35/3.6kW for ERP of 50kW.

It’s a big antenna, 12 bay high, 4 sided panel array.

Wonderful engineering, Australia needs more of it. You won’t see that at mobile phone towers pushing out your narrowcast content of pay tv streaming or podcasts.

Absolutely. Australia needs DAB in more larger regional centres like Newcastle, Wollongong, Sunshine Coast, Central Coast and Geelong.

Just a few random Sydney observations:

  • Radio Austral on 87.8 MHz has been broadcasting silence all day today
  • WSFM’s 88.3 MHz repeater seems to be off-air
  • 2GLF’s RDS has returned but the volume of the audio is very low
  • 2SSR’s RDS has been missing for a while now
  • And for me at the moment, I can’t seem to get 2ST on 102.9. Not sure if they’re off air or it’s just a propogation thing but Triple M from Newcastle is coming in instead.

2ST is on reduced power at the moment where its showing up at between 27 and 49 dBf depending on where I point the aerial on the TEF. Ironically in some positions I can get 91.7 Nowra at the same strength or stronger than 102.9

I noticed that too and was going to post. They must have gone onto very low power around 4pm as there was normal reception around 3pm. Now zero reception in NW Sydney even on my car radio.
Some patchy Triple M Newcastle being received instead.

And still the case now. IIRC the TX site of 87.8 is shared with 2GLF.
I wonder if it’s just coincidence that audio lost on 87.8 & the RDS work with
2GLF. :man_shrugging:
In any case I created a SDR software notch for Radio Austral & can now listen to
what I assume is Noise FM (back to back songs without any IDs )

And still the case :astonished:
Re the above two (& Austral/2GLF) was there some kind of severe electrical storm down that way today?

Certainly plenty of activity today…

102.9 2ST is back on air this morning, but power output is lower than previously.
88.3 WS FM - still off air.
87.8 Radio Austral - still no audio.

Maybe they are at half power again 1KW. A bit weird since they only replaced their old transmitter recently, would not expect problems again so soon.

Could be atmospherics between my RX & TX this morning resulting in lower received signal level or due to event yesterday TX resultantly operating at slightly reduced O/P? :man_shrugging:

I did think that too, but must be at a lower power for maintenance, I’m guessing they don’t have a back up TX for that. I couldn’t get reception at all this morning coming back from Sydney through Brighton Le Sands, San Souci where I could usually hear it.

I noticed last night when putting on 102.9 FM on my Sony shower radio for the classic countdown last night … So not just me  Didn’t check today yet.

I bought myself an Amazon Echo for the bedroom to make listening to online radio a bit easier. Most radio stations work OK with voice command, but 2EAR FM posed problems initially.

'Alexa, play 2EAR FM (Two Ear FM) '- nope (I think it played something totally random).
‘Alexa, play Eurobodalla Access Radio’- nope.
‘Alexa, play EE AY ARE FM’- plays 8EAR Nhulunbuy!
‘Alexa, play TWO EE AY ARE FM 107.5’- at last! And it works without the frequency, too.

I might contact the station about this  Braidwood FM didn’t give it trouble, thankfully.

Another thing I found- BBC stations don’t work natively apart from the BBC World Service, you have to enable the ‘RadioFeeds UK’ skill and then say a particular three letter code… a bit annoying. BBC Sounds does not have support for Amazon Echo outside the UK.

What if you just say TWO EE AY ARE?

Yes, that worked too, as I noted above.

My googles have issues with Smooth Relax. They think I want a playlist from spotify.

If i say “from nova” on the end it works though
