Totally random radio thought just popped into my head, don’t know why, but what was the 3 commercial AM radio stations in Newcastle, all shared the same numbers in their frequencies, just in a different order.
I wonder how that originally came about, just unintended luck or by some strange allocation design?
2HD - 1143
2NX - 1341
2KO - 1413
All 3 frequencies still are in use today but 2HD on 1143 is the only commercial one left on AM, the others are now HPON - Sky Racing on 1341 & SBS AM on 1413.

Yes, I also thought it was odd how Newcastle never got any stations under 1000 khz.
All other markets of more than 3 AM stations had at least one station under 1000 (other than Wollongong).

I know it’s taken a while, but one of the TXA techs is at the Winmalee DAB & WSFM site today, & I’ve asked him to have a listen to WSFM on 99.1 while there.
He’s reported back to me that the audio is very one sided, with the left stereo channel being much louder than the right stereo channel, he’s had a quick look at the transmitter connections but can’t see any issues as to why it’s like this (it’s not a TXA service, so is actually up to ARN to fix this one).
The transmitter is currently off as there’s a tower engineering inspection today, but when he turns it back on I’m going to get him to check it again, & if it’s still lop sided stereo I’ll get the ARN techs to go out & investigate it, I’ve already notified them of the issue but will push them to fix it.
EDIT: TXA tech thinks the audio might be relatively even now after the transmitter has been turned back on, but it could be just the audio that was playing at the time sounded that way?
Can others that might be in reasonable reception range from this site listen & let me know if it’s fixed or still faulty?
The ARN tech manager has told me he wants to replace it all sometime in the near future anyway.

There are a few transmitters anomalies over in WA at the moment -
1494 AM SEN Margaret River, off air for the last 2 weeks.
107.3 HFM Armadale, only about 30khz wide. Full power into a very narrow bandwidth = huge coverage at the moment.
95.3 6EBA FM Perth, 300khz wide at times, in mono. Not unusual though for 6EBA.
92.5 FM ABC Classic Narrogin, audio drop out have returned.

Listening to both 99.1 and 101.7 side by side,
on 101.7 the broadcast audio is louder across both left and right channels, and sounds brighter.
On 99.1 it sounds like the right channel maybe slightly louder than the left channel, if so there is not much in it. As said earlier the broadcast audio is lower than 101.7, and sounds duller.
99.1 and 101.7 are at similar strength at my location.
BTW is 99.1 Winmalee an off air rebroadcast of 101.7??

Yes it is, so that’s why it sounds slightly different to 101.7, it’s just a radio receiver with left & right line audio out & into the transmitter, the sound will come from the decoded MPX signal & will sound like any radio you might be listening to would, a different receiver might sound different.
