No, Rebel & Flow don’t. It’s been an odd anomaly government hasn’t ever addressed.
In a remote town like Ceduna or Cooktown, you receive ABC radio & TV, commercial TV (SCA, Imparja etc), community radio & commercial FM radio. All except commercial radio are partially funded/subsidised (or fully in case of the ABC) by the federal government.
Yes it is odd. The raison d’etre for the remote licences is to provide commercial radio services in areas where they are unlikely to be commercially viable. The corollary is that remote licensees should attract a sizeable subsidy.
The lack of a subsidy may go some way to explaining the eagerness of Rebel Media to serve the Gold Coast and Logan markets…all the other markets are loss leaders.
And others near larger population centres, like Port Macquarie, with overspill hopes!
I reckon Great Lakes would have some overspill into Port Stephens, and maybe Forster too… Port Stephens (towns like Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay) don’t get great Newcastle FM reception, that’s about 20,000 listeners that they could tap into.
Yes the Mid North Coast is pretty affluent now with all the COVID refugees and tree changers. It would make sense to activate those licences. A cheeky one near Coffs would be good, too (maybe Thora, Glennifer area…transmitting off Moombil).
Selfishly speaking, I would love Rebel to launch in the Warrumbungles at a decent power. That would make the drive down the Newell to Victoria far more enjoyable for a few hours. Mt Cenn Cruaich is in their licence area too, so there’s already TX infrastructure there, presuming they could access it…
Though I’d expect the commercial owners in the neighbouring markets (SRN in Coonabarabran and SCA in Dubbo/Gilgandra) to absolutely shit if they ever did.
Listening to Power 100 as I ‘YouTube drive’ through North Queensland.
I find it odd that they use the positioner ‘Better Music and More Of It’. That to me is better suited to a Hot AC or Classic Hits station (and was used extensively by such stations in the 90s).
What’s wrong with ‘Townsville’s Best Rock’ or- even better- ‘Rockin’ The Tropics’ ?
I tried to get The Breeze on the radio in the RSPCA Laundry room today ,no good, maybe the radio would have to be moved,I can’t move it, or it needs a longer aerial Can get it in the car no problem.I had to put it back on 4BH.
This is for the Sydney guys & I would’ve said @Radiohead if he was around. I’m not going to say why just yet, but can you guys listen to both ARN FM stations (WSFM & KIIS 106.5) in various places & let me know (via post or PM) your thoughts on reception, good, bad, better or worse, any multi-path or intermod anywhere on the band?
Let me know your listening location/s & reception reports, good, bad or indifferent.
Transmissions will stay in their current configuration for the next couple of days unless issues arise.
Actually, after further checks on my dx setup there is much less splatter on 101.9 Triple J Central Tablelands, which indicates a slightly weaker signal.
Similar strength to Hope / 2MBS as if it was coming off the Community fm array at Artarmon???
