That’s not quite right. AFAIK the first survey for KZFM had them rocket to #1.
But they couldn’t leave well alone and began fiddling with the music to make it sound more “FM”. Trying to sound cool when the format was a bit daggy (but worked!). Jocks began to sound more ocker. The currents were harder edged, and they began to drop all the sixties oldies.
No doubt the crippling repayments on the FM conversion fee were biting and they got greedy for more listeners. Instead they drove them away.
Ok, As someone who programs music on radio I can tell you why, The songs whilst having alot of hype are not that great & most radio programmers would be just like me, Get though 60 seconds of both new songs, Yawn & say NOT STRONG ENOUGH for Airplay. It’s a simple fact that radio programmers use their ears first & foremost
Sometimes I think that radio stations have given up on being creative. This is such a boring attempt at a billboard. Listen to Triple M at breakfast as these three people host the show. Ho hum.
It’s how I imagine billboards would look if they had them in North Korea. Functional.
Apart from “in the” I don’t like the show name. Obviously “The Marty Sheargold Show” is bland - but at least it doesn’t need knowing someone’s new found nickname. And ‘morning’ makes me think of a 9-12 show, not a ‘breakfast’ show.
I think the fact the dolls used in those ads cost something like $8,000 each was a major reason why there wasn’t a listener giveaway of them.
Still, getting some lower budget replicas into the 2022 Jonesy & Amanda Showbag (presuming that WSFM will again be sponsors - and the event actually goes ahead) would be a really good idea.
It probably wouldn’t be very high, but as long as Bill didn’t pay more than 6 times the earnings figure, it’s probably a reasonable investment.
And I think regional stations are less likely to suffer from online competition as they have the immediacy and local aspect as a strength that they can play to (as that article suggests).
It looks like the storms tonight across the Blue Mountains and Western Sydney have taken the Edge 96.1 off air. That tower at Wentworth Falls is a real lightning magnet.
Surprisingly 99.5 Move fm and 101.1 2LT are still on air. These stations normally go off air and often have extensive outages from lightning strikes.
My guess is the lightning must have hit the Edges broadcast array and damaged their transmitter. Usually the transmitter goes off air briefly and then comes back on after a strike.
The next step for Broad Radio is to launch an app so that the network can be in every person’s pocket, car and kitchen.
“The app is an opportunity for people to just listen wherever and whenever they want, and to make it super, super easy,” Ms Stanley said.
To get the money to fund the technological expansion, Broad Radio has been crowdfunding for $50,000. With less than a month left, they are within $2000 of the goal.
Ms Stanley said she has been speaking with investors from the days Broad Radio was conceived but realised she was asking them to invest in something she was not 100 per cent clear on.
That is why the past year of exploring the content through the proof-of-concept livestreams has been critical.
“Now doing the crowd fund, that’s been more amazing validation that people want this, that women want this,” she said.
It’s a shame to see a great idea fail due to a lack of funding. Who is out there to fund the future of audio be it radio or via different means?
With all the DAB+ spectrum available, the fact no existing broadcaster has tried this speaks volumes.
Being talk based, production costs are higher than a music format.
I was just talking to the Move/2LT tech about this, he said the site took a huge hit from lightning & it fried everything, was lucky to be able to get radio stations back on air using backup stuff not connected, Optus, Vodafone & Telstra at site are still replacing things, radio still has to fix/replace some things too.
The Lithgow translators are on air using 4G as their STL because the NBN cables, between the street & the hut no longer exist, they were vaporized & have to be replaced.
What are the rules regarding swearing on commercial radio? I know triple j plays a lot of stuff with explicit lyrics but probably not under the same rules as commercial radio?
I’m asking because 2UE today played a Classic Vinyl segment that included George Harrison saying “most of the Summer of Love was bullshit”.
