Random Radio

I wish it did.

Same here :slightly_smiling_face:

Sometimes I wonder why they don’t do that. Particularly with KIIS playing CHR you’d think they wouldn’t want the competition. They could just brand it Classic Hits 96.1 and take the 4KQ playlist.

I wish this dream comes true.

Radio pioneer and Australian Rules football umpire Maurie Service died on Easter Saturday after a long illness. According to Radioinfo, Service was a member of the original staff of radio 4GG on the Gold Coast after working in radio news and other roles at 3KZ and 3AW in Melbourne and stints on regional radio in Victoria.

Yes, the best tribute is here:

Some questions I have that I’ve never thought to ask.

I’m aware that ARN & NOVA Entertainment are joint-venture partners in 97.3FM Brisbane and Nova 937 Perth, with the former programmed by ARN and the latter by NOVA. How/why did this come to be?

I know that NOVA had a foothold in the Brisbane market at the time with 4BH - I presume 4KQ was under ARN control at this point? Also curious as to how the situation in Perth turned out - if ARN were ever to purchase 6iX (as is sometimes floated here), they’d need to sell off their 50% of Nova 937.

One last random thought: the two joint-venture Canberra stations - Mix106.3 and hit104.7 - both have streams on iHeartRadio. Nova 937 does not.

Think what stations were in the market prior to the licence auctions.

In Brisbane:
ARN had BH and KQ. DMG had nothing.

In Perth:
Nil for both.

The first ‘missing’ format in Brisbane (remember this is 2000 for 01 launch) was an AC format.

ARN had experience in this with Mix, so enter 973 being managed by ARN.

DMG wanted a national network, they knew a second licence would be offered for Brisbane (04 for 05 launch), so that’s where Nova would go.

On the national network part, only one licence in Perth to be auctioned. So they reciprocated the Bris JV with ARN by DMG being the managing partner, hence Nova on air in Perth.

ARN would’ve known that SCB (and whoever would follow it) would not hold onto 96FM forever, so they’d get an entry at some point to Perth directly via 96.

Back to Bris, with the ARN/DMG JV for 97.3 the successful bid, ARN were then in control of BH, KQ and the yet to be aired 97.3 licence.

ARN had to divest, BH didn’t fit their network mould, so off it went to DMG. Each had 1.5 stations in Brisbane then.

When DMG bought the second Brisbane licence auctioned, 106.9, they faced the same three in a market result as ARN did some years before. So again, BH didn’t fit their network idea, off to SCB who only had BC after acquiring it from the Lambs some years before.

That’s the chronology.

6IX doesn’t make financial sense for ARN to acquire (as sometimes floated here), they have 50% of Nova and 100% of 96. Why would they divest either for a struggling AM station?

Why isn’t Nova Perth on iheart? Same reason 973 is not on Nova’s platform. Just doesn’t fit. Canberra is regional, who cares, less of a demarcation worry.

Cheers, that clears things up for me!

Banning of sports betting commercials

When does this begin? Thought this was to begin 1 April?

When it does begin, what hours does the ban apply to?

My enjoyment in hearing a return to normal ad breaks without shouty ads from johnny come lately betting businesses has been a tad premature it seems.

I thought we had a thread for transmitter sites, couldn’t find it, may have been on the old forum.

So I’ll put it here.

I went up to Gan Gan Hill, in Port Stephens today.

Here is a pic of the three towers

Though I’m not sure which ones are used for TV or the various radio outlets ie. ABC, 2HD or Port Stephens FM.

The smallest tower appears to have UHF TV and FM stacks on it.

All nice lattice towers, no guyed mast rubbish.

Glorified mobile base stations and the old microwave tower at the back?

Great photo @Radiohead and thanks @NRN11 for your comment.

@Radiohead how much more to go of dual carriageway to go from Nelson Bay to Newy? Any work on extending it at present?

Thanks Cranky!

There’s still a fair bit of single lane roads…from Fern Bay to Salt Ash is mostly single lane each way, as is Anna Bay to Nelson Bay…

The only work currently being done to upgrade to dual carriageway is Comorant Rd on Kooragang Island and a second bridge across the Hunter River South Channel on Tourle St at the southern end of the island.

Very interesting, thanks @Radiohead, good to know I haven’t missed anything.

We should perhaps be discussing this on a different forum that discusses infrastructure, isn’t that right @Brianc68?

You haven’t missed much at all.

Things don’t happen around here very quickly.

It only took them about seven years to work out what to do about the heavy rail line into the CBD.

  • Hot Tomato vs Sea FM

Very interesting, the higher percentage of unique + overlap songs, the greater the playlist. KQ is the leader by a country mile, 2389 exclusive, 332 overlap with MMM. Minimal.

4MMM has a very tight playlist, anyone for another thrashing of Cold Chisel and Paul Kelly?

The change to Hit network music has seen them considerably widen their playlist for both 105 and Sea FM.

Another interesting matter to consider is that both KQ and HT ran specialist music over Easter. KQ’s countdown of 1000 songs, HT played all 90’s.

Would like to see comparisons of 973 and Smooth digital.

Why no comparison of Gold and Sea?

Comparing Gold and 94.1 would certainly get discussion moving.

94.1 have largely taken up where Gold left off when Gold foolishly dumped the older section of music from their playlist.

It’s made it very difficult for the audience to understand what Gold stands for these days.

Something you don’t see much of these days.

Radio stations with jersey sponsorships in sport.

Below is of the Sunrisers Hyderabad in this year’s IPL Cricket.

I remember 2WS used to be sleeve sponsors of the Parramatta Eels in the mid 80s, and 2KA had front of jumper sponsorship of the Penrith Panthers in the early 80s.

Perhaps because radio lacks sufficient vision here to invest in such sponsorship?
