Radio Stations - Music Logs

StreamWriter capture from 3-5 pm. Just checked the audio & only the last track (Ozzy) played at 5:11 pm is within Alice’s show. I’m not a regular listener, so hopefully that playlist is indicative!

With RDS on Breeze 92.1, it made an RDS log easy.

Thanks for posting that - the Breeze is not all my cup of tea but they do play some good tracks from time to time.

Out of curiosity to those in the southern capitals, how does this compare to the playlist of Smooth 95.3/91.5? I presume a bit more obscure stuff and perhaps a few older tracks, but is it otherwise similar?

These following links should answer your question.

I imagine that Smooth Brisbane on DAB+ carries the same log as its Sydney/Melbourne station, just on an hour delay (at least between October & April). The same goes for its DAB-only Adelaide (1/2 hour delay) & Perth (2-3 hour delay) stations.

Out of the 2 playlists there is only 1 song I like. Roxette. The rest are awful.

Both playlists are pretty bad. If I had to pick one, it would be 7HO FM.

At least in Hobart, you also have the option of 107.3 Triple M, which plays the “Greatest Hits from the 80s to Now”. As for the Gold Coast, there is plenty of other options available apart from the two SCA stations (Gold & Sea), such as Community Radio, Rebel, Breeze & the Brisbane stations.

Very true mate

What is the current state of Wollongong’s two commercial stations, as far as playlist goes? To find out, I did an hour log of theirs.

For reference, here’s one from November last year (reposted onto the new forum in April): Radio Stations - Music Logs

And how they’re sounding now:

96.5 Wave FM - Wollongong, NSW
"80s to Now" (their secondary positioner is “Illawarra’s #1 station for hits”)
Thursday, 22nd December 2016 - 10-11am AEDT

“Closer” The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey
"As Long As You Love Me" Backstreet Boys
"Dark Necessities" Red Hot Chili Peppers
"Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" Beyonce
"Dancing On My Own (Tiesto Remix)" Callum Scott
"Dumb Things" Paul Kelly & The Coloured Girls
"I Feel It Coming" The Weeknd feat. Daft Punk
"I’m Not The Only One" Sam Smith
"Setting The World On Fire" Kenny Chesney feat. Pink
"Crazy" Seal
"All My Friends" Snakehips feat. Tinashe

i98FM - Wollongong, NSW
"Feel Good Music Variety"
Thursday, 22nd December 2016 - 10-11am AEDT

“Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” Beyonce
"Say You Won’t Let Go" James Arthur
"Rockabye" Clean Bandit feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie
"Last Christmas" Wham!
“Sorry” Justin Bieber
"Wake Me Up" Jessica Mauboy
"Only Wanna Be With You" Hootie & The Blowfish
"Starboy" The Weeknd feat. Daft Punk
"Big Girls Don’t Cry" Fergie
"Into You" Ariana Grande
"Stitches" Shawn Mendes
"I Miss You" Blink 182

As you can see, Wave FM now only plays one 80s track, as well as only two 90s track, at least during that hour, which would imply that the station is moving more & more towards being a Top 40 station, with not much pre-00s music being played. With that in mind, I wouldn’t be surprised if Wave will drop 80s music from their playlist in a few years time. Also, you might notice that both Wave & i98 played “Single Ladies” within 15 minutes of each other. It’s also worth noting that both stations played a song by The Weeknd feat. Daft Punk almost simultaneously, albeit it was two different songs, but still…

If anything, Wollongong is truly the Top 40 capital of Australia. If you’re not really into that, then the ABC or the Sydney stations (which can be a bit difficult to pick up in parts) are really the only other options in the region.

Triple M Brisbane’s “Cold 30” from 1982 which aired tonight from 6 but only seemed to play 22 songs before switching to a Cold 30 from 1986

Coming Down - Angels
Centerfold - J Geils Band
You Got Nothing I Want - Cold Chisel
Shake It Up - Cars
Harden My Heart - Quarterflash
Start Me Up - Rolling Stones
Great Southern Land - Icehouse
Maneater - Hall and Oats
We Can’t Be Beaten - Rose Tattoo
A Town Called Malice - The Jam
I Ran - Flock Of Seagulls
Dirty Creature - Split Enz
Eye Of The Tiger - Survivor
More Then This - Roxy Music
Short Memory - Midnight Oil
Just can’t Get Enough - Depeche Mode
If You Want My Love - Cheap Trick
Private Investigations - Dire Straits
Don’t Change - INXS
Don’t You Want Me - Human League
Jack and Diane - John Mellencamp
What About Me - Moving Pictures

I feel sorry for everyone in the Gong if thats all they have to listen to. What utterly awful playlists!

Can you pick up any of the Sydney radio stations in the Gong? If not I really feel sorry for people in the Gong.

In most parts, yes, especially in areas along the coast and/or with a good view towards the north. In fact, I’ve seen a few buildings in the region where they have external FM antennas aimed north towards Sydney to pick up FM stations from there.

So do I. It’s sad to think that a large number of places in regional areas that have a smaller population than Wollongong have better music variety across its local commercial music radio stations than themselves. For example, Nowra, just an hour’s drive south of Wollongong, has better music variety across both 2ST (classic hits) & Power FM (Top 40/Rock).

Perhaps the best hope for radio listeners in Wollongong is if/when 2ST converts their main service to FM & transmit from Knights Hill, therefore giving Gong listeners a non-Top 40 commercial FM station, albeit fortuitously (but more easier to pick up than the Sydney stations).

After researching the two Wollongong stations over the space of an hour, as well as the 7HO log that I did the other day, I’ve come to the conclusion that the SCA’s regional Triple M “Greatest Hits” stations are not too bad by comparison, despite them sounding rather generic with their playlists being heard across a large number of stations. For example, I would rather listen to Triple M over 7HO whilst in Hobart.

Thanks TV-Expert. I do agree with you about the Triple M “Greatest Hits” format. Triple M “Greatest Hits” stations are the only regional station that I listen to these days. If I am in the Rebel territory I’ll listen to Rebel FM.

So another NYE is upon us and so begins a number of logs bringing in the new year from across the ditch and around Australia. We start in Auckland NZ where the stream quality on my tablet is about as good as a restaurant before Gordon Ramsay rescues them in Kitchen Nightmares, although I’m able to use VLC player to stream it choppily. It wasn’t until I switched to TuneIn where the stream improved to something listenable.
