Remembering Rocktober: Would this old wrinkly still fly today?

When it comes to living and breathing one’s work, legendary radio production whiz Nigel Haines must truly qualify as an expert.

During his days at Melbourne’s 3XY, when he was immersed in the iconic month-long radio celebration known as Rocktober, he practically lived at the station.

Even though 2CS Coffs Harbour was launched in 1985, I thought it was a bit cheeky of neighbouring station 2MC to still be publishing Top 40 charts in the local “Coffs Harbour Advocate” 2 years later.

That’s a fantastic find, thanks for posting!

I remember it very well, and even remember exactly where I was when I first realised Stereo 10 had disappeared in an instant when driving to work. I used to listen to FM104 at home and mostly Stereo 10 in the car as I only had AM radio in the car. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing on that Monday morning commute

Brisbane radio was more interesting back then.
Of course there was no internet ,music streaming ,etc in those days ,different times.I also miss the days of live and local radio,no networking😕

I remember they sacked half of their announcers after this changeover because maybe they didn’t sound ‘mature enough’

I remember the changeover. Have a recording somewhere. What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong
was the first song.

Yes they played this quite frequently back then

Would be interested to know what the last song Stereo 10 played was… probably Europe “The Final Countdown” since that was only about a year old then?

A Hard Day’s Night - just after midnight; then it closed.

7BU celebrates 90 years with a special exhibition

7BU marks 90 years on the air in Tasmania in October 2025.

To commemorate the occasion, Burnie Arts is hosting a special exhibition featuring the sounds, stories and personalities that have connected the North-West Coast community since 1935. The exhibition will feature rare recordings, vintage broadcasting equipment, behind-the-scenes photos and personal memories from generations of listeners, and announcers like Jim Cox pictured above. That young man smoking, on the phone and on-air would have had no idea of his future two decade long political career. Jim also won two Logie Awards for most popular male on Tasmanian television.

Looks like only Andy/Andrew Fox survived.

From the “Northern Daily Leader” July 1986.

Surprised to see 2TM printing a Top 30 chart when most of it’s music was country at the time.
