Radio History

I’m not far past 40 and although I remember 2UW I certainly never listened to it.

I remember a brief period when 2SM had “20/20 News”. It was sourced from Bloomberg Radio and aired on the hour and at 20 past and at 20 to. News three times an hour was quite a good breakfast strategy.

In practice, 2KY did the same when it had its own newsroom and a sense of social responsibility: squeezing an occasional news bulletin between racing calls!

very nice. When do you reckon that’s from? Late 1960s? Probably before the '70s…

The problem for me with 4CD’s frequency was it was the same as 3UZ. Luckily 4CD wasn’t 24 hours in its early days.

Past tense? They are still co-channelled today. Interestingly on the KiwiSDR in the Bay Of Islands (NZ), 4CC is very much dominant over 3UZ. In Sydney and in Canberra it’s all 3UZ.

I remember riding that tram along Church St Richmond around mid-1991, they even played The Fox on the radio inside the tram. This was during the “new Fox mix” era when it was an AC/CHR format, at the beginning of 1992 they changed format to Classic Rock (with CHR shows at night between 7pm-10pm, Take 40 Australia on Sunday afternoons and American Top 40 Midnight-4am Monday mornings) as an answer to Gold 104’s “Good Time Oldies” and Triple M which played more classic rock than modern. There were little to no CHR stations in Melbourne (or Geelong: Bay FM was easy listening and K-Rock was classic/modern rock) from 3XY’s closure in 1991 until Fox went all-CHR in 1995, apart from Hitz FM’s test transmissions at that time, which got good ratings which affected the shares of other FM stations during these tests.

2DAY FM did the same thing?

I’m sure 2DAY would have similar signage on Sydney buses then or now. But as in format 2DAY continued as an AC/CHR station between 1991 and 1995 while the Fox went classic rock.

What year did 98.1 Murray Bridge begin and did it begin as Power FM?

I thought the Austereo globe was from 1995 onwards until 2005. Great logo.

I think you meant 98.7 there.

According to ACMA, it went to air on 12th May 2000. Since 5MU was already owned by Grant Broadcasters at that point (they’ve acquired the station in 1999), it would’ve started off as Power FM.

That’s correct started as Power FM, I was living in Murray Bridge at the time.

I recall that Power FM Murray Bridge urgently sought approvals for translators in the Adelaide Hills and Victor Harbour not long after it first went to air because the insufficient coverage on 98.7 was costing them revenue.

Apart from saving money co-siting with the already existing 5MU, I’ve never understood why they put the FM transmitter in such a poor location. It serves Murray Bridge okay. But is way too low to get over the mountains to serve anywhere much beyond to the west and south.

i’m pretty sure that Power FM is in Ballarat as well.
