Radio DX Equipment

My new one is even better then my Black one on AM, it hears stations that I even have trouble copying sometimes on my HF antenna in the backyard and that’s with the stock whip

I can also pick up Oakey and Coolangatta NDB on LW which are not the easiest copy at the best of times

Mine seams quite good on MW & SW. I’m yet to give it a good side by side comparison with with my various portables & other radios. That’s on the to-do list.
My reception of FM I think could be a tad better, doesn’t appear to be as good as a high end car tuner with amplified antenna re sensitivity, not sure if others have done that kind of comparative testing with modern car radios.

I’m thinking I should look at one of those TinySA units, look very handy. Any recommended sellers? Or going price?

A question for the Discord site? A dry solder joint? I’m not familiar with the hardware cct board layout? Be good to try to remedy.

Yes, I’ve been meaning to try different settings and antennas.

Weirdly I find the TEF picks up much better the radio in my work car which is a 2021 Ford Ranger

Here is the exact one I purchased off this seller and had no dramas, just have to be careful as lot of fake shitty ones people sell

Oh and if you can afford to spend roughly double the money or so get the Tiny SA Ultra, much bigger screen, slightly more accurate and has the ability to go up to 5GHz ish
Looking at upgrading in the future as I use my standard Tiny SA quite often in the Field for quick bandwidth checks on Broadcast services

I do wonder whether the varying levels of performance we seem to be getting among us is an indication of an inconsistent build quality? (or maybe we just have differing levels of expectations!).

A new TEF firmware release today for DXers 2.00.12 part of which includes:

New function: FM DX Mode.
With this function you can auto search empty frequencies for DX!

A new section in the menu can be found. These are the options:
Begin scanning memory channels: Set the first memory channel to use with this mode
Stop scanning memory channels: Set the last memory channel to use with this mode
Wait time: Time to wait before skipping to next frequency
Memory Channels (only/Exclude): Scan only the selected range of memory channels or do a full scan and exclude the frequencies in the selected memory range
Auto cancel scan: You can select to never auto cancel the DX scan, or when a correct PI is deteced or when a signal is detected
Mute audio while scanning: During scan you can mute the audio for your comfort. Audio will return when scan is canceled.

You can either start the DX scan from the menu, or by setting the radio to MEM mode and short press the band button. During scanning MEM will blink. During scanning output to XDRGTK, webserver, RDS Spy and Stationlist will also work. Cancel the scan by pressing any button.

Hopefully this will help you to just get that special DX. (edited)

Nice. If you could only have one radio for FM dx, this would have to be the top contender (build quality & speaker quality aside). The firmware for the TEF/ESP32 is great and keeps getting richer.

Yep exactly, i hardly use any other radio anymore, i have about a dozen of them in the cupboard.

Only maybe the Panasonic occasionally for DAB+, but if the TEF could have that too.

TEF radio comes in handy for more then just checking out RDS and FM DXing (Using my old black one incase all the RF messed up the front end lol)

Was quite handy been able to monitor the AM service I was working on today to ensure nothing was going wrong back at the TX Hall

A small Disclaimer before someone gets upset I was inside the Standby ACU with the mast grounded while working on it

Glad to hear, but I like going in the On Air ATU (carefully) & listen to the coils talk or sing.

What do they say?

I bet they like to sing Blondie’s “Coil Me”.

Or maybe Go West’s lesser known B side to “Call Me”, “Coil Me”.

Didnt chart as well or at all considering its only listeners are broadcast techs changing the playout song remotely while in the TX Hut.

Yeah it is good fun doing that, but my current job has to make sure everyone is you know… Safe!! No inside active ACU units, matter of fact ain’t even allowed to go inside the compound :pensive:

The things us commerical techs have done would make OH&S people have a cardiac :joy:

But remember the transmitter has feelings too. Remember the Number 1 Stevie Wonder hit “I just Coiled to Say I Love You”. But remember dont get on its bad side or it will play Cliff Richard’s hit “We Don’t Coil Anymore” but remember its Always “Wired for Sound”

Further to the above.
Story time

Sorry Admins

I remember during my time helping out 1197 Brisbane, had a contractor in to clean up around the tower and hut, and we had dropped the power from 1kw to 500w to make it a bit more safer

I am standing in the hut with my friend when the TX starts losing its shit folding back, and I look at my friend and go what the hell, has he hit the earth mat somehow and it is hitting the mast.
We both look outside and here is old mate leaning on the tower whipper snipping, my eyes widened, followed something along the lines of “what the f*** are you doing mate, get off the f***en mast before you kill yourself” in his confused state he asks " oh is that why I can feel a tingling through my body" with me replying “keep leaning on that friggin tower and you will end up with more then a tingle” and he calmly replies “oh I just thought it was the sun burning me a bit worse today”

Yeah me and my mate were lost for words, suffice to say we ended up doing the grass cutting ourselves lol

I had to make an unusual radio related purchase today. A pair of pliers.

I found that i had the whip antenna screwed on too tightly to the supplied connector and couldn’t twist it off with my fingers! Thankfully the pliers did the trick, whip antenna off, rabbit ears now reconnected
