Radio Data System (RDS)

Perhaps intended, but PI code of ABC NewsRadio still with PI Code of 206C according to your pics.

Whilst I know that’s possible, I’ve noted time delays between FM & DAB+ (the later delayed) broadcasts which wouldn’t be ideal re automatic switching. I’m not sure of the technical reasons for that.

I was gonna pop on here to say that 91.7 had rolling text with weather/programming and 95.7/98.5 had news headlines on News Radio. Well done! Can’t wait to see how it all ties together when it’s done

Without going to too much effort, how many sites are we looking at? I’m guessing in this part of the world, we’ll see at least Lismore, GC, Brisbane obviously, Southern Downs. Sunshine Coast maybe? I recall hearing Mt Mowbullan doesn’t have the facilities for RDS

Though I did have to laugh this morning, obviously the ABC News RDS just takes headlines from the news website, and this was one of the first things I saw on it

Felt a little odd my radio asking that kind of question of me :joy:

RDS has been switched on for ABC NewsRadio and Radio National from Mt Moombil.

Awesome news. And a great DX target from here in Brisbane

And Middle Brother RN as well! With a stack of AFs (98.3, 99.5, 99.7, 102.5, 104.1) … 99.7 probably shouldn’t be there though.

PNN 94.7 too weak to tell if it has it.. 95.5 Local and 98.7 Classic don’t appear to have it yet.. 96.3 JJJ blocked by Coast FM here.

Any word on Goulburn? JJJ already had it in any case.

For @Parex11 , I’ll be travelling home via:

  • Warrnambool
  • Colac
  • Latrobe Valley
  • Bairnsdale
  • Orbost
  • Cann River
  • Bombala
  • Brown Mountain
  • Cooma (95.3)

:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

And you want to listen to JJJ all the way without tuning your radio? :joy:

I’d rather be stuck in a six hour traffic jam on the Monash than be subjected to the caterwauling on the Jays. But I digress.

(And sites like Orbost and Cann don’t have the Jays at any rate…)

Thanks for doing the roll-out of RDS across the ABC’s regional transmitters – it should make automated DXing with the TEF much better once the RDS data is added to FMList. How are you planning to do the ABC Local stations? (in terms of PS, PI and REG) ā€˜ABC GC’ was an easy fit in the 8-character PS limit, but I assume some of the local stations’ names will be harder to abbreviate.

Also, if you have time to answer, DXing from Sydney, I’m curious if you if know if any of these transmitters will support RDS:

  • Mount Penang (Gosford)
  • Garlands Hill (Portland)
  • Mount Gray (Goulburn)
  • Gan Gan Hill (Port Stephens)
  • Mount Canobolas (Central Tablelands / Orange)
  • Soma Mountain (Tamworth)
  • Brown Mountain (Bega/Cooma)
  • Mount Cenn Cruaich (Central Western Slopes)
  • Little Duval Mountain (Armidale)
  • Mount Dowe (Upper Namoi)

98.5 RN Portland VIC now has RDS.

ABC LR or ABCLocal both could be options for ABC Local Radio PS

I doubt it will happen, but I’d love to see the Local Radio callsign/frequency in the RDS PS eg. ABC 92.5 at Gosford or ABC 2BA on 103.5 Batemans Bay.

To be honest, nobody except us nerds care about the legacy callsigns. I’m guessing it’s a fair while since 2BA/2CP/2NC etc were used on air. I think 2BL disappeared sometime in the 90s? Some older folk (along with us nerds) still use 2BL and 3LO in casual conversation.

just want to also say thank you @Parex11 for all
your work so far getting RDS rolled out, doing all this as a side project is outstanding so absolutely take as much time as you need. this will be appreciated by so many people, including those outside of this forum, since functions like AF are very useful in fringe coverage areas

I’ll admit I went to a spreadsheet and tried to see if I could fit decent names in the char limit. I found this fun. It really shouldn’t be.

Thanks for the confirmation, Parex11 :). Apologies if my question was a bit too long.

It’ll be interesting to see if you set up AF/REG between different ABC Local regions (e.g. AF from Illawarra to South East NSW) or if they’ll be treated as separate networks.

Looks like RDS is live in Orange now. My spotty RDS reception of RN on 104.3 in Sydney:

Some more RT:

It’s showing up as music on the M/S indicator – though that might just be from my weak signal.

Back when RFBurns posted on Mediaspy, he mentioned that there were issues with having RDS on mono transmissions – you haven’t encountered any problems so far with that?
