Radio Data System (RDS)

Thanks, didn’t realise it was shared. Perhaps that explains it.

Sadly I fly out Thursday lunch time so won’t get to hear Tribe. And i can’t really get 91.1 in the metro area, have to go down towards Noarlunga for decent reception.

So you’re saying you Noarlunga get it in Adelaide?

(Sorry, I’ve been waiting for a good Noarlunga pun. I’ve Adelong drive to Tumut).

Being semi local, the next time I’m heading down I can try and get Triple Z. Does mean I have to be there during the week though

Went for a drive back up to the Adelaide Hills today, and it’s probably a good thing I did, as community station 5LCM 88.9 DOES have RDS after all! It must have a very low injection level as I didn’t see it yesterday and on the TEF the RDS meter was going between green and red repeatedly.

RDS worksheet updated with the following details and I’ve also removed the ‘Inactive’ comment re TCBL 91.1 Tribe FM.

Thx for the offer to check but it’s not required as it was seemingly Triple Z that @Radiohead was hearing & it didn’t have RDS. Whilst Tribe FM does broadcast Fri to Monday & last reported with RDS last month.

Good work!

Thank you. :slightly_smiling_face:

I forgot to ask last night; does the hire car vehicle tuner you’re using decode the FFFF PI codes, eg 89.3 5EFM & 88.9 Life FM ?

Yes, it does!

But only displays proper PS on the drivers info screen (main screen uses Gracenote) as below.

Vehicle is a 2024 Toyota Kluger GX 2.4 turbo petrol (non hybrid).

Oh, whilst I think of it @Radiohead , did this vehicle decode the RDS PS of 90.1 Happy FM at Victor Harbor, which supposedly has a PI Code of 0901 ?
I ask as there are a small % of vehicles that won’t decode RDS with leading zero PI codes, as I think you know.

Yes I’m pretty sure it did.

Seems that Port Stephens FM have ditched the recently implemented Dynamic PS and opting to leave that field blank with any info going into the RT field.

Better than Dynamic PS, but I’d rather they just put the frequency or something in it eg 100.9 or FM100.9

Seen this happen many times on triple j and ABC Classic Melbourne too,

Hi, Here is the RDS i received on from my flight to Thailand. Seems like quite a few stations have different RDS compared to whats on the spreadsheet.

Also, 90.7 sen and 100.9 SBS Darwin have deactivated their RDS

Thanks for an awesome RDS updates across Vic, NSW & NT under what would have been difficult & challenging conditions in the confined space & with limited time. Yes lots of updates. :slightly_smiling_face:

Was 93.1 Hit reception from Wagga Wagga? If so I’m wondering if the RDS Encoder was recently replaced from a possible unit located over in Port Hedland, WA with that odd PI code of 6917. Must be quite a recent change if so?

Disappointing seeing Hit 99.7 Griffith using Dynamic PS.

97.7 should be changing their RDS PI from 0000. Few people will be seeing the RDS.

Another PI of FFFF added to the unfortunate non-compliant growing list with EMFM Echuca now using it. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I wonder if SBS Darwin is just a momentary deactivation?

Yes several changes with some RDS details not updated for some years.

I noticed that only NewsRadio runs RDS from Lismore (Mt Nardi) now.

TMFM has the dreaded scrolling RT: ‘TMFM>95.5’. The injection level on this seems to be lower than for 92.9. Of note, both 92.9 and TMFM were local this morning and 92.9 were even doing an OB!

I’m up in Stanthorpe this weekend so finally got to check out how the ABC services work with RDS AF driving between Brisbane and here.

My verdict : it’s amazing and should be everywhere.

Tuned to 107.7 JJJ in Brisbane and it left me there until about Kalbar where it first started to switch to 103.3. Flicks a bit towards Aratula but funnily enough stays with 107.7 as you get close to and ascend Cunningham’s Gap, as the range shadows reception of 103.3 but the elevation helps reception from Brisbane. But once you’re up the range and out of sight of the view down, it’s more or less 103.3 all the way from there.

But it did exactly what RDS should do for a national service - it kept the signal good and ensured that I stayed tuned to the same station for three hours driving time without having to manually tune the radio. I cannot understand why it’s not in place across all ABC networks everywhere really. It’s such a good feature.

That’s good.

Did you notice any “skipping” (for want of a better term) as the ABC FM services are not always in sync (in my experience).

I have mentioned this behind the scenes so so many times and got in trouble so many times, I have given up trying

It wasn’t really noticeable to my ear, but the music at the time didn’t make it easy to check though.

Compared with some others that you do hear are out of sync, it didn’t seem at all bad even if there was a slight offset.

Yeah we all appreciated your efforts & it’s sad what’s happened.

It is a great feature & unfortunately it just shows how backward the ABC is in not implementing RDS across larger areas. Sure we understand the problems with the border regions with different time zones & different news services, but plenty of transmitters in regions away from the state borders where it could be rolled out further afield.

If people want it they would need to write into the ABC Managing Director and request it. To coin a phrase; '“make your voice heard.”

There is likely to be a slight delay as 107.7 is Codec Fed where 103.3 is Satellite Fed
