Radio Data System (RDS)

Did a little editing of our RDS List this weekend.
Created a separate Market Area for Moranbah, Qld based on ACMA LAP for Moranbah & moved relevant RDS stations into that Market on the sheet.
(There were duplicate entries of 96.9 4RFM incorrectly added to Emerald & Mackay)
Interestingly when opening up above LAPs in Google Earth there are several overlaps of markets up to 3 in fact.
Anyway the above changes improve the overall result.
Also added more Service Area information in the notes where needed & transmitter information.

NEW: Also noted someone recently added 99.5 Vision Australia - Geelong entry into spreadsheet, so this is another new RDS station to highlight here.
If anyone with RDS SPY or other such SDR software in Melbourne Geelong area can expand on the RDS info with PTY or PI info etc that could be helpful.

88.5 2RRR Ryde, Sydney joins the RDS bandwagon.
Unsure exactly when this happened, but recently.
Unfortunately the RDS subcarrier level is very low, therefore a very difficult prospect for dxers or those on the outer fringe of Sydney to decode the RDS.

That’s Great news! Yes, I’ll need some tropo to see this. 2RRR is just below the noise floor here.

In Melbourne for a few nights, 3PBS has a very unusual RDS set up.

No text at all in the PS field, everything in the Description field

Exciting developments…

New RDS station in Sydney:

Great news!

Shame there’s not enough room for a space between the 3 and 2.

That means the majority of Sydney suburban community stations now have RDS.

Just 2RDJ 88.1, 2RES 89.7, 2MWM 88.7 and 90.3, 2HHH 100.1, 2RPH 100.5, 2WOW 100.7 to go? 2MCR 100.3 has had it in the past.

Pulse FM didn’t appear to have RDS on when I was down visiting the Hawkesbury on the Kings Birthday Long Weekend.

If your referring about Wollongong’s Pulse FM they have had a few issue the past few weeks.

Not sure what’s been happening but they haven’t been playing news, weather, traffic, or ads etc and using 2015 era Idents. And the RDS hasn’t been working. Assuming it’s a back-up or something.

Happened last weekend and occasionally some workdays. Definitely on there part as it’s all back to normal the next day.

Yeah it’s ugly. Hopefully they change it. Simply ā€œ2GLFā€ would be sufficient.

Interestingly looking at their RDS data, they’re using a PI code of 293C.
293C is the same PI code that Eagle FM are using, sure to be a tuner switching
problem on the fringes of 2GLF reception area when there’s a strong temperature inversion between Goulburn & Sydney.
Audio from 2GLF sounding a quite ā€˜tinny’ at the moment.

Must have been a brief disruption to their RDS service at the time, as I’ve noted their RDS plenty of times since then. Such things occur as just now noted that 2RRR’s RDS is absent :man_shrugging:

I’m amazed at the number of instances we have of stations using the same PI code!

Surely they can use their imagination a bit more….

Yes!

There is the possibility that their RDS Encoder is an ex unit from Eagle FM.
But if their tech possibly took more care or (if applicable) was more knowledgeable of RDS & knew of our RDS list, then perhaps this poor choice of PI code usage could have been avoided.
It’s been said here previously that PI code selection needs to be administered by a central national body to avoid all these potential problems. ACMA would be the obvious choice.

This looks like the touchscreen in my Mazda 2

Yes looks like we both have the same MZD Connect systems in our Mazdas.

It’s a decent unit, but the graphics are a bit old fashioned (as the system was released in 2013 I think).

Mine is a Mazda 6.

Yes mine has the MZDA connect system too that I upgraded to include Apple CarPlay

Does your car also have this rotary control near the gear shift?
It’s very useful.

Small update to this one that I’ve added to the spreasheet, with my TEF6686 I can see this station is broadcasting PTY 3 ā€˜Information’ and PI 3995, which is the same pattern as most of the other Geelong region stations but unfortunately also used by TRFM in Gippsland on the same frequency.
