The Victorian Government announced this morning that Flagstaff, Melbourne Central and Parliament railway stations would stay open until 3am on New Yearâs Day, to reduce overcrowding at Flinders Street and Southern Cross following NYE fireworks. In previous years, the three underground City Loop stations would close at 11.45pm on December 31.
Meanwhile in Sydney, from the updated articles @JohnsonTV posted earlier:
NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said she had âgrave concernsâ about the risk industrial action could pose to those âtrapped in the cityâ after New Yearâs Eve celebrations at Sydney Harbour.
âI havenât ruled out that I will recommend to government that we cancel the fireworks,â she said.
âItâs that serious because 250,000 people ⌠come in during the day, they spend all day in the city but when itâs time to go, when the fireworks are over, the job is to get them out safely and quickly and if thereâs no transport, we canât do that.â
Morningside train station reopens on the 31th New Years Eveđ
Youâre complaining that itâs dark at 5am?
The Victorian Government announced today that test trains would run between Hawksburn and West Footscray stations through the Metro Tunnel, from January 3 to 12. During the period, buses will replace trains on the Sunbury line between North Melbourne and Sunshine, while Cranbourne and Pakenham line trains will terminate at Caulfield.
No, they moved out there because they think theyâre engaging with Western Sydney. I live out here and like fuck they are.
I might have taken the light rail this weekend for a spin if I didnât have things to do and rubberneckers doing the same thing. I might do so in January. Waiting for the extension to Olympic Park - changing over at Lidcombe be damned.
Also, can the RTBU just chill out over the holidays?
Brisbane inner city train stations (Central ,Fortitude Valley and Bowen Hills )are closed until the end of January.More work getting the Cross River Rail ready.
At least theyâre doing it then as schools and universities are closed ,and lots of people are on a Christmas break,so thereâs less people using the network.
New Yearâs Eve train strike cancelled

Good. It wasnât the right way to handle things. People wouldnât have been on their side.
The New Daily, SBS and The Sydney Morning Herald have reported on the union dropping the work bans overnight, but the ABC News website and app still have no updates yet.
Because the premier having a tantrum and threatening to cancel fireworks because they wonât come to the table is the right way to handle things?
Truthfully itâs all a complete shitstorm with no correct answer that will keep people happy.
But if you bring all the people to the fireworks only to leave them stranded after, I donât know what other option there is?
I just canât help but feel this couldâve been averted - obviously the RTBU are up for a fight (albeit picking the wrong fights at times, such as the whole palava about staffing for the Sydney MetroâŚ), but it also demonstrates Minns is not a particularly good operator when it comes to these negotiations.
I know itâs not ideal, particularly those who rely on regional trains, but surely someone could try and scramble some extra buses in the case of a no train scenario. Yes, it wouldnât be a comfortable journey, and would take a lot longer, but itâs better than cancelling the fireworks. Thereâs also light rail as well. Do ferries run overnight on NYE - Iâm guessing they donât because of the fireworks themselves?
A LOT longer! A Waratah can hold a max of 2100 people standing and sitting. It would take 40-50 standard buses to match the capacity of a single train.
And thatâs before you take the slower, longer journey that a bus gives.
