The construction of Sydney’s Southwest Metro train line will be delayed after the union and government could not reach a bargaining agreement, costing taxpayers $3.6 million a day until it’s resolved.
“We’ve been in long conversations with the transport union for some days now … unfortunately we have been unable to reach an agreement,” NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen said.
“I thought we had come a very long way, I thought we were very close … [but] there were some demands we could not agree to.”
Those demands from the union included a Sydney Trains driver on every driverless metro service, which Haylen said wasn’t possible.
“I need those Sydney Trains drivers for the Sydney Trains network,” Haylen said.
There were also demands not relating to the Metro that they couldn’t agree to, the minister said.
What would a train driver do on a driverless train?
Something to do with the tap technology.
The driver will open and close doors and monitor the route, similar to MTR trains operating in Hong Kong. If the automatic system fails, the driver can take over the control manually.
MTR has a 60% stake in Metro Trains Sydney, which operates Sydney Metro under contract from Transport for NSW.
So… do nothing 99.9% of the time.
. That was why the Victorian Government put the ticketing system out for tender before signing up a new operator last year.

The Rail Tram and Bus Union had asked for the Southwest Metro to be staffed at the same levels as the recently opened City Metro, which has one staff member on every train and platform. The government agreed to the request during talks on Friday.
Staff on every platform, sure. But a staff member on every single train?? It’s a fully automated system what the heck will they be doing??
Roving staff would’ve been surely been a more sensible use of money and resources?
A conductor of sorts wouldn’t be a bad thing - especially if they were actually a public service role where members of the public could ask for information, they’d be a presence to reduce vandalism, etc. Late night that might help a lot with confidence to use the service.
Problem would only really be that you really can’t afford train driver wages for such a role across the whole system - and would make reaching the frequency goals difficult.
Pretty sure when the original section opened I read somewhere that there would be a staff member on at least every 2nd train, I have also heard this may have been upped to every train for the opening period of the city section but yeah not sustainable I think - at the frequencies advertised - to have a staff member on every service being paid a drivers wage. Someone on every platform/station (and roving staff across every 2nd/3rd train) should be sufficient for the Sydenham-Bankstown section.
Be a union member.
All four TBMs will be powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity while two of the TBMs will come to Victoria after helping build Sydney Metro – reflecting Victoria’s strong pipeline of infrastructure projects and reducing the carbon footprint of the works.
The two TBMs from Sydney Metro are the ones currently used in boring tunnels in Sydney Metro West or Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport projects.

The Sydney Harbour fleet is to go all electric, with the first fully electric ferry set to join the Parramatta River service in 2026, and the first Manly and inner harbour ferries to follow soon after.
The NSW Government is planning the phased replacement of all diesel-powered craft with modern vessels powered by green energy alternatives by 2035. The new vessels will be built locally.
A tender will be called to gauge the options for the replacement of the Manly Freshwater fleet, which could include hydrogen given the extra distances and demands of a route that encounters heavier swells.
